I’m overwhelmed by sons kindness and want to share it

Hello all, as it’s Christmas and there is often so much bitterness directed at young adults these days for being selfish etc. I just want to share the most incredible act of kindness from my son.

My son is 24, my mum passed away 21 years ago, my son has no memories of her as he was so little. She was buried up in the north east where she spent her entire life and despite DH and I living down in the south we always made an effort to visit her grave on December 23rd, her birthday. It really mattered to me and the thought of her spending her birthday alone crippled me. This year DH and I were unable to travel, DH is unwell and we are caring for his elderly parents, there was just no way we could make the journey without comprising his health and treatment.

Today though my son, who lives in London and is spending Christmas abroad with his girlfriends family, so has really had to go out of his way to do this, sent me a picture of him at my mothers grave, and text “I couldn’t let grandma be alone on her birthday could I”, he lay beautiful flowers and told me he and his girlfriend just spent some time there.

Im completely overwhelmed by this act, he had no personal connection to her, it was wildly out of his way and no doubt cost him extra to do so.

I know it’s easy to believe many young adults are selfish and lack values but in the days leading up to Christmas I just want to share a little story that proves there are many good ones out there too.

What a gorgeous post to read.

Perimenoanti · 24/12/2025 00:00

Oh congratulations OP. Don't be silly, you absolutely raised him and led by example in ways you may not have thought significant.

Thank you for sharing such a lovely story.
It isn't often we read nice things about men here. or young people for that matter.

I would have sobbed receiving that picture, what a mix of enotions it must have brought with it!

I very much did sob, it was so unexpected and I’d spent all morning being very sad I couldn’t be there.

I think it is so easy to lose hope right now, so many awful things are happening, so many people who are kind don’t have the resources to show it and the media and social media makes it very easy to push the worse of society. So close to Christmas I couldn’t think of a better time to share a small but real beacon of hope that humanity is not gone and kindness still exists.

@Crinkydinky
Such a lovely heartwarming post.
You have brought up a boy to be a man to be proud of and rightly so.

fruitfly3 · 24/12/2025 00:07

Thanks for sharing this moving story OP, what a wonderful son you have. Also I’d like to add what a great girlfriend he has, to have gone with him…

Giraffehaver · 24/12/2025 01:15

I'm so happy for you. What a lovely thoughtful man you have raised

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 24/12/2025 01:23

What a lovely story OP, I’m so glad he could do that for you and was thoughtful enough to think of it x

socialdilemmawhattodo · 24/12/2025 01:23

How lovely! And yes this is how you (and DH - is that dad?) have raised him. My son is 20, we've recently lost my brother unexpectedly, and my son is over making sure both I but also his Granny are OK. He is the most thoughtful of his friends by a mile. That is no accident. You and I have set boundaries. We are good parents.

minerva7 · 24/12/2025 01:25

How lovely 🥹

Raspberrymoon49 · 24/12/2025 01:28

How wonderful, more young men like this would make the world a better place

OP, you have raised a kind and empathetic man. You should be bursting with pride for what he has done ❤️❤️ the fact his girlfriend accompanied him shows they are a good match for doing this together for his family. She is a keeper! I am proud of him & I don’t even know him 🤗 if only there were more men like him the world would be a better place for all.
