I like the idea of snow tax. Here’s mine.

No snow overnight. My kids are disappointed. Absolutely treacherous on the pavements though.

LlynTegid · 05/01/2026 08:51

No new snow and very little here anyway, though the roof opposite still has some from Friday which has not melted fully.

countrygirl99 · 05/01/2026 09:07

We had a light covering overnight. Not enough to be fun, enough to be a nuisance.

It was supposed to be a tad light hearted, what with it only 4 days into a new year 😀

On a more serious note, until pollsters start to work out how to reslice their data to account for the fact that people under 20 have a completely different relationship to those between 20 and 40 (or so my tame 30 year old education advisor says) it would be wise to take polls with a little bit of critical thinking.

See also the rise in tactical voting in the left in all age groups. The rise in reform in that article is less interesting than the huge leap in the don’t knows.

The left wing parties might be behind the times, but the left wing voters have figured out how to mobilise themselves much more effectively.

Mumsnet analysis found that overall sentiment for Farage was negative (average minus 0.25), but a “persistent minority” were positive about him, citing his “relatability, clear communication, perceived authenticity, political success and consistency”.

So much to unpick in just this one sentence from that article.

BIWI · 05/01/2026 09:55

Thing is, I could agree with all of that - but I still can’t abide the man and would never vote for him.

BIWI · 05/01/2026 10:03

Thinking about my lunch, I’ll also be making my own mayonnaise - which is very easy to do if you have a stick blender. This also has the advantage of keeping the carbs very low.

This is the recipe I use:

https://www.seriouseats.com/two-minute-mayonnaise

The ingredients (if you don’t want to read the article) are:

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) lemon juice (from 1/2 a lemon)
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 medium clove garlic, minced
  • 1 cup (240 ml) vegetable or canola oil I use avocado oil
  • Kosher salt which just means sea salt or coarse salt

This will make plenty of mayo and will keep in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Two-Minute Mayonnaise Recipe

Using an immersion blender, you end up with a cup full of creamy, perfectly emulsified, real-deal, better-than-anything-you-can-buy mayonnaise.

Depending on your data sets, populations are quite responsive to the concepts of fluid dynamics (which is used to design safety exits for public spaces and buildings). Applying the Law of Large Numbers to that, you can get some illuminating interactions.

Younger voters tend to be more energetic and therefore less predictable, older voters less so, however a lot depends on the forces being applied and more critically the vectors they make in the population.

Apparently you can then talk about attractors and wave functions; but I'd fallen asleep by then.

Just frost here

Love that random mayo recipe BIWI 😅Might actually give it a try.

I might too. Probably much nicer than store bought @BIWI !

cardibach · 05/01/2026 10:49

No snow here but a hard frost. Intend to walk a dog this afternoon but I’ll see how the ice goes. Very, very cold.

BestIsWest · 05/01/2026 11:08

Snowy dog tax. Very unusual to have snow here.

A huge amount fell from about 10 pm onwards. Traffic chaos this morning as the roads were not gritted. Taken this morning.

I'm quoting myself to apologise to those out gritting last evening and night. Twice. The temperature fell to -12C so a very hard frost on top of a heavy snowfall. Another snow photo as well.

Snow tax up my road ... startlingly blue sky - 5th in a row now. Will 2026 exceed 2025s sunshine record ?

It's not the wrong thread at all. Recipes are legal tender for thread tax purposes.

LittleBowSheep · 05/01/2026 12:51

More snow overnight and it's also frozen over. Can't provide snow tax as it's too slippery to go outside. Lots of schools shut and very few buses out and about.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 05/01/2026 12:58

I've never made my own mayonnaise before - but I'll try that receipe - thanks @BIWI 😁

PickAChew · 05/01/2026 13:07

Nerr snerr, here. The temperature is just creeping up to zero. The bonus of the biting wind is that the pavements are drying in patches, so I managed to take DS2 out on the bus without either of us landing on our arses. The downside is that it made my eyeballs hurt.

SerendipityJane · 05/01/2026 13:44

Not sure if here is a thread on this, but as an aside, it's fascinating how much effort the police put into this, when they couldn't even track down my lawnmower despite having footage of it being loaded into a van with registration (a) clearly visible and (b) reported by many other residents.

Only recently I wrote that the post war peace dividend meant that public knowledge of uniforms and ranks is non existent (whereas my DM and her DB could spot regiment and rank at 100 paces. Doubtless helped by the fact that DGF and his DB (killed in action) served and wore uniforms).

Which is an almost perfect statistical split ....
