Delicious Christmas dinner, and the Yorkshires turned out absolutely perfect for a change!

PickAChew · 25/12/2025 22:32

I can never make enough pigs in blankets. My lot snaffle them and the extras I make and set aside don't stay in the fridge for 24 hours. I just have the pigs because the blankets give me an instant headache. Christmas food is all rather histamine heavy and I'd rather have a bit of wine and a mince pie within my tolerance limits!

DS2 calmed down once I started cooking, this morning and even wore a hat out of a cracker at lunchtime - a first for him.

cardibach · 25/12/2025 22:38

Re the cheesecake I mentioned - it’s bloody lovely.

DD did very well to soldier on and eat her dinner and enjoy despite her (pretty horrendous) migraine. Proud of her.

BestIsWest · 26/12/2025 09:44

Thanks for the cheesecake link. When we have made our way through the mountains of food we have here I’ll give it a try.

BIWI · 26/12/2025 10:28

We were all so full of food that we never made it to pudding! So Sticky Toffee Pudding is on today’s menu at some point Grin
Overall, a lovely, lazy day. (Apart from the time spent in the kitchen, of course). Very generous gifts from DH and both DSs. Watched the latest Knives Out film, and played card games late into the night/early morning, before I finally gave in and went to bed.

Morning all

Had a lovely day yesterday, we also watched Knives Out Smile and played a few quizzes. No space for afters.

I have tried three times now to pay Christmas Cat Tax. HQ clearly hate cats.

I didn’t see the speech as I was carving. But I listened & thought what a positive message he was sharing!

I’m sure he expected the reaction from certain groups.

Piggywaspushed · 26/12/2025 11:34

One more time for luck?

Yay, tax paid Piggy, very stern looking cat Grin

She is thinking about taxation.

DuncinToffee · 26/12/2025 12:14

I like venison. I only ever had in restaurants.

I make a lovely venison & beef with port and apricots stew (Mary Berry - Cook Now, Eat Later recipe book)

pointythings · 26/12/2025 12:29

I love venison. So versatile.

cardibach · 26/12/2025 12:34

I like venison too - mostly in restaurants but I have cooked it at home - in stew/casserole form.

cardibach · 26/12/2025 12:36

I have sooooo many leftovers and I’m still stuffed! I had some toast with my homemade mackerel pate at about 12 and that was enough to top me up. Lazy one today catching up with festive specials of Call the Midwife and All Creatures Great and Small. And more eating and drinking I expect. I’m on my own so I can please myself as to when.

DuncinToffee · 26/12/2025 13:08

We are feasting on pigs in blankets and cranberry sauce at the moment for lunch aka late breakfast

Love venison. Mystery present sender was solved but the suggestions as to who it could be were hilarious in a family sort of way.

Loads of cheese still to eat. Dinner was fantastic because my daughter makes the best roast potatoes in the world! I make the best sage and onion stuffing!

Off out this evening to a friend's get together.

cardibach · 26/12/2025 13:25

My roast potatoes were a triumph yesterday too! I’ll be having cold turkey and wedges (maybe the roasties warmed in the oven so they stay crispy as well) with pigs in blankets, stuffing, cranberry and pickles. Need to be hungry first though…

BIossomtoes · 26/12/2025 13:46

Our roast potatoes (from Waitrose) were beyond disappointing. We’re frying the leftover ones tonight. It’s made from scratch all the way now.

I was given Gary Stevenson’s book yesterday and have just finished it. It’s a total page turner and reads like a novel. Highly recommended.

Piggywaspushed · 26/12/2025 13:54

I over boiled my potatoes yesterday so they went mushy but no one seemed to care.

Today is left over turkey with dauphinoise potatoes which I make with Wensleydale.

PickAChew · 26/12/2025 13:56

I'm a cba cook at the best of times but only home made roasties for Christmas - King Edward spuds and peanut oil because it gets them super crunchy.

placemats · 26/12/2025 13:59

Maris Piper potatoes are the best and thanks Aldi for good ones. IMHO.

I listened to it as an audio book because I’m not good with non-fiction. Fascinating.
