I’m watching four weddings and a funeral for the first time since I was about 15 and I have questions. When did everyone stop wearing hats to weddings and why are so many people (Carrie mainly) wearing white to weddings

The not wearing white thing was definitely a thing in the 90s. I think in America/Canada you were expected to though, so perhaps it was just because Carrie was American.

People still wear hats to weddings though less men seem to wear top and tails than I remember. Weddings seem to be more of a palaver now.

I got married 1996 in Germany .My very best friend then was Canadian and she asked me if it was ok if she wore a white dress I am Irish and I honestly didn't know what she was on about so said I didn't care .She came in a cute little white polka dot dress and one of my other friends had a white jumpsuit on .I had a simple but beautiful wedding dress .All the Irish came in hats and our German guests were goggle eyed at the style of all my Irish friends .Happy days !

Fat? WTF? She wasn’t fat?!

Agree, pp is thinking of a different character. Curtis was partial to a fat joke though.

IIRC, that was Helena aka Miss Piggy (whose mother was Mrs Piggy and had made a pass at Charles) who'd lost weight. Not Henrietta.

I still think of Anna Chancellor as Duckface whenver I see her in anything! She's a very good actress though.

You might be right that's what I'm thinking of. But there's definitely some line about how she's changed since they were going out the last time which has not aged well.

Wasn't there a kind-of sequel in the form of a Comic Relief sketch a few years ago?

I thought that was love actually

I kinds of think it would work. Could start with the funeral of one of the main cast (poor scarlet) then the weddings of the kids and finally Charles and Fiona ending up together oh and Matthew marrying in a huge wedding with a picture of Gareth at the top table

They've done both.

Also assumed it was a joke. Never considered she actually married Prince Charles!

I always thought it was a joke too!

I think Richard Curtis has a problem - there are no gay couples in Love Actually, either. It's all very hidden with him.

What do you mean by "either"? It's not at all hidden in Four Weddings, and Tom in the Bridget Jones films is clearly gay. Also, Billy Mack and Joe.

DappledThings · 12/12/2025 08:16

Coffeeishot · 12/12/2025 08:08

I don't think she married him i assumed it was just a "fling".

Not that this is gospel of course as it's open to commentating by anyone who has an account on imdb but them marrying does seem to be the generally accepted understanding there:

I’m watching four weddings and a funeral
LaBelleSauvage123 · 12/12/2025 08:17

I hate that bit when Carrie is listing the men she’s slept with. So knowing and arch.

@deplorabelle Henrietta was never fat. It was Helena(another of Charles’ exes) and her mother(who made a pass at Charles) who are the butt of the fat jokes. “We’ve both lost a lot of weight since then!”.
Sorry to be pedantic! I have watched this film far too many times. I totally get your point about Curtis’s writing in this area—also implying Natalie,in Love Actually, is fat. I’m very happy that type of humour is no longer acceptable.

Yes. That not nice ‘Miss Piggy’ and ‘Mrs Piggy’ joke.

That poster may be confusing it with the moment where a happier Henrietta meets Charles at Carrie and Hamish’s wedding and says she’s feeling ‘Rather cheerful, actually. I weigh practically nothing and I’ve got a divine new boyfriend!’

I think you are right it was Love Actually, I only remember Chris thingy and the little boy and girl who grew up in it

DappledThings · 12/12/2025 08:20

Ah-ha, have now found a quote from Richard C himself! It was a "fling rather than a long-term relationship". Hence Fiona is no longer with PC in the Red Nose Day sequel.

So not a joke photo, it was meant to show she was in an actual relationship with him for a short period but not a happy ever after either

Mystery solved 😀

I still think it was a joke! Pre photo shop it was sometimes a bit of a joke to paste pictures together and it was always quite obvious.

Fiona would have made a spectacular Queen though!

Coffeeishot · 12/12/2025 08:22

QUEEN FI 😀

Oh I stand corrected and disappointed she never became a fictional queen

Coffeeishot · 12/12/2025 08:24

Going back to "Fat 90s" wasnt martine McCutcheons character supposed to be fat in love actually?

Coffeeishot · 12/12/2025 08:25

Oh Love Actually was 03 I thought it was 99, but still fat jokes.

skilpadde · 12/12/2025 08:30

Ketzele · 12/12/2025 00:39

I'm over 60, and I dont remember this horror about wearing white in my youth. People talk about it now as though it must be the obvious thing to everyone, but it really isn't.

I presume it must be because of the change in fashion with wedding dresses. Back in the 80s and 90s, wedding dresses were often meringue-like, and absolutely full of fussy details. There’s no way a woman guest in a white shift dress or similar was going to be mistaken for the bride. As wedding dresses got slinkier and lost the excessive detailing, it became easier for a guest to look bridal by wearing white, so white became a total no-no.

stayok · 12/12/2025 08:30

This was very much my wedding era and social set. Hats were normal (and one of the things you had to think about when planning was space for women to put their hats safely for the reception). Wearing white wasn’t unusual- two friends wore white trouser suits to my wedding- although obviously you wouldn’t wear a white dress that looked bridal.

EasilyRemedied · 12/12/2025 08:31

Agree with pps about Fi! Would have been a great ending if she and Charles had ended up together. We wouldn’t have had to endure, “Is it still raining, I hadn’t noticed.” But then again, we couldn’t have had the Prince Charles gag at the end…so swings and roundabouts.
My favourite part used to be “Are you telling me I don’t know my own brother?!” But I guess thats in bad taste also and dated these days. Having experienced many similar situations with relatives growing up, I could relate and it made me laugh.

Coffeeishot · 12/12/2025 08:34

I think white was a mid 90s colour lots of white in the shops, so i can see why women wore white to weddings,.and I can't remember it being a thing.

Danikm151 · 12/12/2025 08:34

Has anyone seen the follow up that was done for red nose day a few years ago?

Yes, she was! We’ve just got used to people being bigger so it seems normal (even though it isn’t.) Years ago I watched Roseanne and couldn’t believe how big she and husband Dan were. Nowadays it doesn’t seem so big even though they were obese!

MadTurkey · 12/12/2025 08:40

Not that this is gospel of course as it's open to commentating by anyone who has an account on imdb but them marrying does seem to be the generally accepted understanding there:

But Richard Curtis said it was just a joke on aristocratic Fiona’s likely taste in men when they did that sequel for Red Nose Day, where Fiona has a child which he specified was not Prince Charles’s!

I mean, I don’t think it’s that deep. She fell for Hugh Grant’s character who is called Charles, and got a different Charles as a joke placeholder in the end montage. No one seriously intended us to think she and PC married.
