I’m watching four weddings and a funeral

I’m watching four weddings and a funeral for the first time since I was about 15 and I have questions. When did everyone stop wearing hats to weddings and why are so many people (Carrie mainly) wearing white to weddings

I got the impression that Carrie wore white to weddings to deepen our dislike for her character.

I think hats went out of fashion in the late 80s / early 90s. I think that people who were middle-aged in that era are more likely to wear hats to weddings or church nowadays, as it's what they are used to. However, for younger people, it's not really the done thing. Fascinators, maybe but hats rarely.

Although...hats are still very fashionable for a day at the races!

I haven’t seen this film in years! I loved the W.H Auden poem Funeral Blues which was read at the funeral!

Embarrassing really but when I watched it at 15 I didn’t realise that Gareth and Matthew were a couple. I realised they were gay but thought they where friends.

Funny I never thought about Carrie wearing white, and I just googled it and it says it was popular fashion choice and not as much frowned upon as now! I mean my friend had all her bridesmaids wear black and everyone thought it elegant back then.
OMG - you must have been quite innocent 15 year old!

Frynye · 11/12/2025 11:39

Looking back I think I was 13, and I think it’s because they say “friend” at the funeral. I just didn’t put it together lol

I think the film really captured the "feel" of the 1990s amongst a certain "type".

Frynye · 11/12/2025 11:56

And everyone treated Hen horribly.

I didn’t like the black hat with the white outfit. It didn’t look right.

90s, though. Guess it’s better than lilac or lime green.

I think hats went on a lot longer than that.

You still get them at smart weddings, along with yep a lot more fascinators, and this film is about that strata of society

Yes. Having the temerity to be a) fat and b) deceptively now thin means you no longer qualify for personhood in the Curtis universe.

Edited to add: I love Richard Curtis's writing really a lot a lot but my goodness he has a sexism problem on occasion.

I first saw this film when I was a teenager and couldn’t believe how many people Carrie had slept with!!! I hadn’t even had my first boyfriend then so found it hard to comprehend!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/12/2025 12:04

There’s an excellent episode of Derry Girls featuring a wedding hat.

And for 90s nostalgia chef’s kiss.

FrenchandSaunders · 11/12/2025 12:05

I really bigged this up to my teen girls a couple of years back and we were very disappointed .. I remember loving it at the time but it hasn't aged well.

I suppose it would be very tame to today’s teenage audience

I do suit a hat, I must say. But I think the last time I bought a hat to match a wedding outfit was in 1996.
Never ever saw what was so irresistible about Carrie.

I agree. He seemed a much better fit with Fiona

I was the same age as the characters at that time and spent two or three summers going to weddings very like the ones in the film, even one in a castle! Sadly no Hugh Grants around.

I didn’t realise until quite far into the film, I think well after the funeral, that they were a couple. It wasn’t explicitly said and it was very unusual to have gay couples portrayed on films or tv.

SydneyCarton · 11/12/2025 23:01

I also didn’t clock that Gareth and Matthew were a couple until the funeral when it suddenly dawned on me Blush Carrie was frightful, the bit where she got Charles to help her choose her wedding dress was horribly cruel.

The first wedding was very like my cousin’s, huge marquee on a big farm/estate, animals running around, everyone in huge hats, giant meringue dress, the lot.

Me and my friends were horrified too. Now it seems fairly tame.

DoYouWantHalfThisSandwich · 11/12/2025 23:05

I watched Four Weddings as a fifteen year old & my main take away was, I needed a Gareth at my wedding. Now nearing 44, & I still want a Gareth at my imaginary wedding ❤️

Giggorata · 11/12/2025 23:05

i was taken up with hat envy throughout that film, mainly for Fiona's glorious hat in wedding 1.
I wore a hat as mother of the groom, around 14 years ago, and the inevitable top hat with goggles at a friend's steampunk wedding.
I love hats, wish more people wore them.
Carrie was an absolute pain.

BrandyandGinger · 11/12/2025 23:09

It's a film that has aged terribly. Carrie was a pain. Fiona was way too good for Hugh Grant's character.

RumbleHoney · 11/12/2025 23:10

What channel was it on, OP? Would love to watch it again
