I’m watching four weddings and a funeral

I’m watching four weddings and a funeral for the first time since I was about 15 and I have questions. When did everyone stop wearing hats to weddings and why are so many people (Carrie mainly) wearing white to weddings

Scarlett and Charles were not brother and sister.

Yes they were! Google it.

They were friends and flatmates!

PacificState · 12/12/2025 16:30

Surprising amount of dispute about the lore in this film 😂 Curtis isn’t so much a details guy, is he. I wonder if he hadn’t worked half of these things out for himself.

PacificState · 12/12/2025 16:38

And yes, so interesting (for those of us old enough to remember pop culture in the 80s and 90s) how absolutely massive the generational change has been in attitudes towards gay relationships. IIRC George Michael didn’t properly come out until after this film was released. I’m not even sure that Boy George was officially out when this film was released! The depiction of the Gareth/Matthew relationship seems incredibly tame and shamefaced now, but including a happy gay couple in a squarely mainstream film felt quite brave at the time.

Okay, I just did and the first result was “Scarlett and Charles were friends and flatmates, but not brother and sister.” Grin

GreatUserName · 12/12/2025 16:43

The only siblings portrayed were Charles and David.

I first saw this film when I was a teenager and couldn’t believe how many people Carrie had slept with!!! I hadn’t even had my first boyfriend then so found it hard to comprehend!

I was very far from a blushing violet in my teens/20s, but still thought Carrie’s ‘count’ excessive to say the least. And I didn’t like the way it was evidently supposed to be something admirable. Hugh G should have got himself tested for STDs!

I did find the film hilarious when it first came out, though.

YellowCherry · 12/12/2025 16:51

There seems to be some confusion about this!

Never thought about STDs! It did seem like it was something admirable! I thought it was because she was American! It still seems like quite a lot!

I think this is a case of an AI fail! If they were siblings then I'm sure it would've been mentioned in the film.

Brefugee · 12/12/2025 16:58

have not rtft. I love hats, and i still wear them to weddings (and yes, i am sniffy about fascinators)

I love weddings and have been to many. Many of them like the weddings in this film. Best outfit for me is the one Kristin Scott Thomas wears to Charles' (aborted) wedding

KiIIingMeDeftly · 12/12/2025 16:59

I think the actor playing David is deaf IRL. And though casting a deaf actor as a deaf character wasn't unheard of back then, it wasn't particularly common either.

Right back at ya @YellowCherry Grin

Hugh introduces David as his brother several times but he never introduces scarlet as his sister. Not to say she isn’t but it’s never mentioned in the film. Maybe in some dvd extras or deletes scenes

Hugh Grant & Charlotte Coleman Film: Four Weddings And A ...
Scarlett and Charles are key characters in the beloved British romantic comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), played by Charlotte Coleman and Hugh Grant (Hugh Grant), respectively; they are friends and flatmates, with Scarlett often seen bringing Charles breakfast as he gets ready for his endless weddings, embodying the film's central theme of searching for love amidst nuptial chaos

From Google

RoamingToaster · 12/12/2025 17:14

I think a fancy hat at a wedding looks nice. I’m sure they’ll come back in style again.

I think 4 weddings is the only Curtis film I like. I haven’t watched it in a few years but I don’t agree that it’s aged badly. There might be a few things done differently now but I don’t remember anything bad or cringey.

Someone needs to send this thread to Richard Curtis so he can clear things up for us

Emma Freud might be a better bet!

How on earth could RP-speaking minor posho Charles have a younger sister who spoke pure Cockney?

reversegear · 12/12/2025 17:43

I loved the old cars, the lack of phones watched it a few nights ago and still enjoyed it. But Carrie was a smug pain in the arse.

TwelvePiecesOfFlair · 12/12/2025 17:50

Tom and Fiona were brother and sister.
Also… AI results from Google are generally suspect!

TwelvePiecesOfFlair · 12/12/2025 17:51

Really interesting about the poem MadTurkey, thanks!
