How do you feel about this for National Service/Conscription?

A lot of European countries, most notably Germany are moving towards the reintroduction of conscription. Right now, Germany has introduced a volunteer system, whereby all men born in 2008, who will turn 18 in 2026, have to undergo an assessment to test for their fitness for military service with the intention of incentivising German men to join the German military. However, if there are not enough recruits, then Germany may mandate conscription. But, this is just for men; not women.

In some other European countries, conscription is mandatory for only men; while in others like the Scandinavian countries, women are also obligated to take part in military service.

I know that some may oppose conscription/military service in the UK outright; but if, for whatever reason, it was re-introduced, how would you feel about the following points:

  1. Should British women aged 18 and above be forcibly conscripted along with British men; or just British men?
  2. Should women have to undergo the same processes in the military like have to have their heads shaved like men do?

I wonder how this fits into feminists' views of equality. Again, before some people start suggesting that they are opposed to conscription for everyone, what I'm asking about is if somehow it was implemented, regardless of how you feel about it, how do you think it should be promoted i.e. for both sexes and both having to undergo the same processes or just for men?

Will you be volunteering to fight 😁

I would volunteer to do whatever was asked of me if it meant avoiding a much worse fate for my children via invasion. You?

RaininSummer · 07/12/2025 16:42

I don't think anyone should be made to go to war but national service or conscription where you can opt to do non combat roles, ideally not in war zones, could be of value.

Notmymarmosets · 07/12/2025 16:43

Men don't have their heads shaved, so I can't imagine may women will opt for it.

BreakingBroken · 07/12/2025 16:46

@Notmymarmosets I don’t get the impression the OP is interested in a robust discussion on the matter.

FairKoala · 07/12/2025 17:02

I am trying to work out how this would work

Most of the young people who I know aren’t UK citizens or are 2nd generation immigrant. (As am I)

Forced conscription How does that work? We go to war not knowing which side the soldiers we trained are fighting for

National Service just for British citizens whilst foreign students take the their university placements

I think that most people in the UK don’t realise that huge numbers have no allegiance to this country. They might have been born here but they still speak their families language as their 1st language

gogomomo2 · 07/12/2025 17:17

If men are conscripted so should women be but nobody has to shave heads these days, men or women. My dd is in the military.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/12/2025 21:30

l can’t take it seriously. It’s just a warmonger drumming for young cannon fodder.

Bollocks to that.

You would prefer to be invaded by Russia?

Rightyotime · 15/12/2025 21:34

Would uk really be a target for Russia? I don’t really understand why. Am maybe clueless

daisychain01 · 15/12/2025 21:37

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 07/12/2025 10:07

No and no. But women should be able to volunteers for appropriate roles and learn basic defence, nursing and logistics.

and technology/IT security/AI skills.

Rightyotime · 15/12/2025 21:41

i mean, I am aware from the odd article that I have seen that we are at risk. But I always think aren’t there other countries would be more priority to them first?

Sorry to break it to you but they're already eyeing us up.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/russia-submarine-tracked-english-channel-british-navy/#

They do things like that all the time, and have done for many years. They poke their noses into our airspace all the time too, and the RAF see them off. The Russian and British pilots have been known to wave at each other. It’s the mild sabre-rattling that the Russians have always done.

@monrymeadows73 I suspect you started this thread to be goady. Have you never seen British men and women in the Army, Navy and RAF, and seen that none of them have shaved heads? Or have you only ever seen the military in American movies about Vietnam and such like?
You are also conflating conscription and National Service. Do you really not know the difference? I’ve known several people from abroad who did National Service in their home countries, and all of them were OK with it.

sprigatito · 15/12/2025 22:12

When women have equal agency in and responsibility for starting wars, then they can conscript us. Sorry to spoil your little fantasy about beasting feminists and shaving their heads 😂 but no, it’s neither reasonable nor practical.

jollyoldsanta · 15/12/2025 22:13

Oh look, this thread again.

No, Russia isn’t going to invade. If they do it will be a nuclear war.

IF it happens then it will be a cyberwar. It’s not going to need all our young people.

And why should it? They have as much right to life as anyone else. Conscript all the warmongers.

Nursing? Why nursing for the love of God

Itsmetheflamingo · 15/12/2025 22:18

Who gets their head shaved anyway?! What’s this point even about?

I disagree with national service.

I also wonder why a country would need it when modern warfare is highly technological and requires extreme training and experience, not cannon fodder

GentleSheep · 15/12/2025 22:19

I'm not a feminist. I don't believe women should be conscripted into actual combat types of the military. However they could certainly be conscripted into other duties that don't put them in that type of combat situation should the need arise. Head-shaving for women? Don't be daft.

I'm pro national service, I do think our country needs it and it doesn't have to mean we are going on a war-footing, rather think of it as one or maybe two years of service to one's country.

We also do it. There was an episode of that documentary that followed the navy (warship, it’s excellent) where the Royal Navy, plus additional air support sailed all the way to. The South China Sea with the sole aim of showing off their new ship to the Chinese, just a Willy waving contest. Took weeks to get there just for a drive by.

Please explain the logistics of Russia mounting an invasion attempt on the UK. How do you see them getting sizable numbers of troops, vehicles and supplies on to UK soil?
