What's the strangest phobia you have ever heard of, or come across?

I remember reading years ago that someone had a phobia of sprouting potatoes.

That might have been me! I've definitely posted it before. It stems back to c. 1978, age 6 and reaching into a big paper sack of potatoes which was nearly empty. The potatoes at the bottom had sprouted so much that my entire arm got touched by potato shoots. I was utterly freaked out and still would be, if it ever happened again (which it won't because I don't plunge into dark potato bags).

We'll that sounds EXACTLY like the story I read! How weird if it was you 😮
It just always stuck in my mind because I thought I would be absolutely freaked out too if what you described happened to me.
And I think about it every time I see any potatoes getting sprouty.

Moths
Sinister, furry" children of the night"
Silence of the lambs poster with the moth in someone's throat makes me feel sick.
Luckily the cat sees them as flying snacks and quickly dispatches any that arrive in the house.

Yellow sweets. I hate them. The thoughts of even putting one in my mouth makes me gag. It's not even about the flavour. 😳

Is it the fear of them popping ? My daughter is also afraid of balloons she says it's the anticipation of them popping cos she's also fine with the shiny helium ones.

I think it’s the texture - not that I ever get close enough to feel it. But burst balloons are also dreadful. And I’m retching now, trying to visualise what horrifies me so much 😂

Fish, alive or dead. Can't go near them. Really annoys my DH as I won't go in the sea or lakes with him 😬

I was just reading through to see if it was just me but yes, hate the sight of them dead or alive, slimy horrible things just give me the creeps. It's weird but as a child l had a recurring nightmare of falling into a pond full of fish really packed with them and then l woke up when the horror of feeling them on my skin as l sank in.
My DH also gets annoyed as every other bastard advert seems to have a dead bloody fish in it and l even squeal in horror if one pops up unexpectedly and in the supermarket l walk past any fish counter with my hand up to that side of my face so l don't see them.
I even fell out with a friend once as she always has bloody sea bass complete with head etc and in a large group always somehow ends up sat right opposite me.
I changed seats once to the other end of table so l couldn't see her plate , but another time when it happened again l couldn't swap so sat with my elbow on the table and hand over my forehead iyswim to literally block out the bloody dead fish. She said l was being overdramatic and l was shaming her for selecting what she wanted to eat etc.

I have a relatively new one that has started in recent years. No idea why! -
The interiors of decaying houses.

This is an example and only has a few photos but as I click on each one I feel a rising panic and have to stop.

They make me cringe too , especially if you have dry / rough fingertips

Lolly sticks and the little wooden forks in the chip shop. Just thinking about makes my skin crawl. If I if I eat a lolly, I have to lick my fingers so they’re not dry cause I can’t touch the stick when it’s all dry.

That is strange if nothing triggered it, l sometimes wonder if there is something in this reincarnation stuff as like with my fish phobia absolutely nothing untoward has ever happened to me connected to them.

Wooden lollipop sticks/cutlery.

Omg! I thought it was just me 🙌🏻

PolkaDotPorridge · 14/11/2025 20:23

Another one for microfibres cloths . Ugh. Mine is monkeys. Not a phobia as such but they make me instantly cry if I see a photo or if I see them on tv. All types. They just make me feel so sad. I try to avoid seeing them.

DirtyBird · 14/11/2025 20:30

I cigarettes, they gross me out and i can't even look at pics of them. I avoid stepping on them when out and about too. Don't let one get dragged into a restaurant from outside, I won't eat at all.

Not a phobia but something that makes me feel weirdly anxious is the sea on Google Maps, especially in satellite mode. There's something about it that I find really creepy and I have to look away or quickly move over land. The thing that makes it weirder is that thankfully I don't have an issue flying over water in real life, despite there being a rather higher chance of falling into the sea in a plane than on Google Maps!

If you have a VR headset you can use Google Maps in 3D (It's called Wander) so you can be over the sea and look down to see it underneath you. I recommend not trying that!

I'm intrigued by the person with a Mary Tudor phobia!

White sauce (to go with yellow sweets). I cannot bring myself to eat a dish with white sauce. 😩
