What's the strangest phobia you have ever heard of, or come across?

I remember reading years ago that someone had a phobia of sprouting potatoes.

Wet floors in and around swimming pools. I can't walk on them bare foot because of any hair or goodness knows what else may get on my feet. I always wear flip flops (have a clean pair just for this purpose) to wear from changing room to pool side.

Todayistuesdayxxxxxx · 13/11/2025 21:18

My phobia are caterpillars.
I'm also petrified of mice (have a cat who hunts) but I don't think it's a phobia with mice only caterpillars.

I clicked on this to say I am petrified of sprouting potatoes 🤣🤣🤣

Astrophobia. I'm so scared of looking at pictures of space (alone) even though I find space interesting and I love reading about it.

Edwinstarrihavefaithinyou · 13/11/2025 21:29

A wet dishes sponge that hasn't been wrung out.
The thought of cold dirty dish water in it 🤮

Snugglemonkey · 13/11/2025 21:31

Ok, I am autistic and I have sensory issues, I am not sure what is phobic and what is autistic. I have misophonia, I have real issues with mouth noises. Pretty much all of them, but I literally pinch myself hard under the table with lots of them, particularly that slap kind of noise.

I cannot eat while that is happening, I often pinch myself so hard I break skin. I do not do it internationally at all. It is like a zoning out to cope and when I am back in the room, it hurts! Plus I have just poked food around not eaten. So then that person finishes, I get a few bites, and the meal is away. I cannot say I need more time if everyone else is finished. I cannot stand the idea of the whole table hear my mouth noises without their own to cover it. So then I cannot eat.

It really destroys a lot of things for me.

My DD has a real thing against anteaters. She doesn't like the face and the tail being too similar.

Achewyhamster · 13/11/2025 21:37

Tin foil

I just can't-it gives me panic attacks

A colleague at work thought this was hilarious and brought some in

I lost it and had a panic attack before they let me go home

He got bollocked and a memo went round to say that phobias are very real and not to make someone 'face their fear'

I can't go near ketchup either-thats not a phobia as such,I just cant bear the stuff (and it's everywhere)

I'm fine (ish) as long as it's in the bottle

My daughter has a phobia of baked beans.

My husband would totally agree with her !!

I feel like a phobia is more severe though, no? These are more like irrational dislikes. Canned fruit salad for me.

Yes, and I'd really caution people against using the word phobia loosely for something they simply dislike. Phobia is a real clinical definition which can be very debilitating. For example, a person with a phobia would certainly not feel comfortable with posting a photo of the object of their fear on this thread. There are ways to learn to live eith your phobia, though, at least at a level that makes it bearable

Arran2024 · 13/11/2025 21:42

Mine is used tea bags.

FastFood · 13/11/2025 21:43

I remember a guy who was scared of pickles. I must say I'm not the most comfortable with gnocchis.

Marvs · 13/11/2025 21:49

My phobia is when I have to say the word fruit. I think it has to do with the shape of my mouth when I say the word.
other words using similar mouth shapes are fine

JumpLeadsForTwo · 13/11/2025 21:52

Not quite a phobia (in that I won’t avoid them), but a real fear of buildings collapsing/ falling on top of me. It’s a weight thing - used to struggle in planes (ie getting my head round how they could get off the ground) but they don’t bother me as much, hate old buildings where I am hemmed in like theatres. I will go to them but will google the particular place/ news stories of buildings collapsing etc. I panic about how a building which was designed and built years ago can still be standing and manage the weight of a large number of people. I must have been trapped in a collapsed building in a previous life!

SwallowsandAmazonians · 13/11/2025 21:54

Very specific phobia here of old/vintage dolls.

It's like part of my brain thinks they are dead babies, it's the uncanny valley thing they aren't alive or dead and they seem like they could somehow move.

I've had panic attacks and can't be in the same space as one. A modern doll in a well lit room is totally fine.

I have a friend who is scared of potato eyes.

Unescorted · 13/11/2025 21:56

My mum has a phobia of thick string. Thin string and wool is ok.

Me betting shops and casinos.... Even news articles or in films.

queenofthebongo · 13/11/2025 20:36

I was thinking the same. I used to have arachnophobia and I couldn’t even look at a picture of one. Even a picture made me scream/cry. A real one and I couldn’t walk past it and I would be hysterical. Much better now but I still struggle with large ones and I can’t have them on me.

Sorry to hear that. I'm lucky in that I've never had a phobia. I was quite scared of the dark when I was little - things like imaginary people under the bed or stairs, someone had to turn the lights off for me. Weird as I love the dark now I'm an adult 😂

My own one I think is odd. Submechanophpbia. Fear of man-made objects partially or fully submerged under water 😰

This is mine too 😬 The hull of a ship is the worst – and submerged ropes/chains.

Pixiedust49 · 13/11/2025 22:11

I’m definitely claustrophobic ( lifts, planes , traffic jams) but also obsessive about split ends in my hair. Can’t bear them and have to cut them out. If I see them in another person’s hair I want to grab scissors immediately!

Jessesmum19 · 13/11/2025 22:21

Nipples !! I can't cope with the feel of them especially of they get wet. I can't touch them I can't look at them. I couldn't breastfeed because of it when I'm washing I have to make sure they don't get wet.i can't stand other people's either !!
Yes I'm weird 🙈

Itsnaptime · 13/11/2025 22:24

Strawberries for me. I'm absolutely terrified

usedtobeaylis · 13/11/2025 22:27

Its kind of a phobia - even the remotest imagining of someone's teeth on a duvet cover. I can't explain where this came from or why it haunts me but the thought makes me gag. I freak out if someone's mouth is too close to the duvet.

Shmee1988 · 13/11/2025 22:39

Sloths!!!

Flannelfeet · 13/11/2025 22:49

I have a fear of balloons..the latex ones, the foil ones i seem to be ok with. I also have a fear of holes. Trypophobia 😬
