What's the strangest phobia you have ever heard of, or come across?

I remember reading years ago that someone had a phobia of sprouting potatoes.

really tall people and people on stilts 😭
scares me to death 🤦🏻‍♀️

Wildflowers78 · 13/11/2025 18:10

I have a phobia of newspapers & kitchen roll…! Absolutely hate the smell of paper

PrincessASDaisy · 13/11/2025 18:10

My own one I think is odd. Submechanophpbia. Fear of man-made objects partially or fully submerged under water 😰

GameOfJones · 13/11/2025 18:13

My phobia is submarines. I can't bear to even look at them and if one appears on TV my heart races, I go completely cold then hot all over and I have to look away.

WeeAgnes · 13/11/2025 18:18

My own ones are rickety rope bridges - if you watched Celebrity Traitors, you'll know exactly what I mean.
Open gap staircases for me too and glass floors.
You're in a new shopping mall, walking merrily along then suddenly screech to a halt as you encounter a sneakily placed glass floor - arrhgggggggh!
I managed to walk up to the first platform of the Eiffel Tower and did not get any further.
No thank you.

Mine is a phobia of drive-through car washes. I can't even bear to look at them from a distance.

This I think it was the James Bond film where Jaws?? Hid in the back or something.

I don’t like polystyrene and I don’t like certain people (abused as a child) so a certain type of man height weight hair colour etc and facial features are a trigger. I also can’t cope at all with hair in food.

I’m autistic though.

My son can’t cope with the smell, or test of Mint hyper hyper sensitive and he’s autistic too.

Jumungo · 13/11/2025 18:28

I have a phobia of belly buttons.
I can't help feeling queasy if look directly at one, especially an outy or a pierced one.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 13/11/2025 18:30

My mum's was rock salt (solid blocks) which didn't give her many problems in her latter years but she was born in 1923 so there may have been issues with it in her youth I suppose 🤷‍♀️

LauraC1984 · 13/11/2025 18:31

I have a phobia of eggs! They are the food of the devil, the look, the smell, the taste, everything! I feel sick just thinking about them, and scrambled are by far the worst! 😂

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 13/11/2025 18:31

Ever since childhood I have had a phobia of the bottom of the sea. It's just so deep (obviously) that it makes me feel totally claustrophobic. I hate seeing footage of it so I avoid it as much as possible, and curse every time poor Titanic comes round to being the flavour of the month again.

I have no idea where it came from and ironically I love the sea and adore swimming in it. Just not under it.

SoScarletItWas · 13/11/2025 18:35

Extreme volumes of food.

When they do the mass catering round on MasterChef I have to leave the room. Inside The Factory is a horror film as far as I’m concerned. I can’t stand the sight of buffets. And grazing tables make me actually heave.

Grazing tables are grim anyway (here is lots of food that I’ve fiddled with and now other people are also going to pick at it) but it’s mainly the volume of food in one place that distresses me!

WookieMama · 13/11/2025 18:36

DD has a phobia of stickers, they are everywhere!

TheWiseAmethyst · 13/11/2025 18:38

Empty swimming pools or worse with dirty grey water with things floating in them. Anything to do with squats, wet mattresses, sofas left out in the rain. 🤮
I have the trypophobia thing too. Tree bark, cracked earth, lizard skin, penne pasta standing up, grains of rice, Paisley pattern. All of these plus more will set my back a twitching and shuddering. 😬

TheWiseAmethyst · 13/11/2025 18:40

I find graffiti both revolting and destructive. Hate seeing it spoil beautiful buildings.

WolfieMuma · 13/11/2025 18:47

My mother has an extreme fear/phobia of balloons, to the point where she doesn’t really attend parties. Apparently it’s not that unusual

I know of someone else who has a phobia of maltesers, of all things

They say all phobias are related to a trauma relating to the object, but I don’t know how that would explain things like sharks, snakes, etc

SpiceGhoul · 13/11/2025 18:53

Wooden lollipop sticks/cutlery.

WhereAreMyKids · 13/11/2025 18:56

Fish, alive or dead. Can't go near them. Really annoys my DH as I won't go in the sea or lakes with him 😬

Mine is heights which is standard, the odd part is the bit that terrifies me the most is those wrap around really tall escalators at the tube and department stores. I get this intense urge to jump, as it's the quickest way down. Then I get more anxious that I'm going to jump and break my leg but in my head I still really want to. It's a vicious cycle, my dad has the same thing.

PegDope · 13/11/2025 19:36

My friend is deathly afraid of marshmallows. If she sees one she screams and has to run away.

ReignOfError · 13/11/2025 19:36

@WolfieMumaIs your mother okay with the shiny (I think usually helium filled) type? Ordinary balloons terrify me so much i almost throw up. I too try to avoid anywhere that has them, but I’m not so bad with the shiny foil type.

WolfieMuma · 13/11/2025 19:39

@ReignOfError Interesting question, I’m not sure!

WinterIng2025 · 13/11/2025 19:40

I feel like a phobia is more severe though, no? These are more like irrational dislikes. Canned fruit salad for me.

I do not. Do you have any manners?

LittleGreenDuck · 13/11/2025 19:47

Belly buttons, polystyrene and allotments. I always assume there are bodies buried in allotments.
