It's time 🎵🎶 well nearly, 2 hours and change until it drops. It should be 10.30.
Its my favourite time of year but as usual I will probably be useless and depend heavily on mumsnetters for help to decipher.

I searched and couldn't find another thread if there's one already up and running ill delete this.

Edited for proper link

4 hours of trawling the Waterstones website and I finally got there. Even the dogs cleared off to bed and left me to it.
That Calendar one was a sod.

Sorry very late to the party, the cat one has my stumped.

What would you call a witch's little companion?

OneWildBiscuit · 15/11/2025 07:28

Completely stumped on the hair, the spinning books around the Christmas tree star, and the seasonal books on the shelf. Any hints?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 15/11/2025 08:19

@OneWildBiscuit Spinning books won the Booker very recently

SaratogaFilly · 15/11/2025 09:01

Hair is a homophone
Seasonal books - the seasons all make up what? And then what are they describing? To be fair, I had to get a DM as I’d never heard of the book & had no clue what it was!

Chumssss · 15/11/2025 11:42

Just the mug to go and I just can’t get it!

Just the mug to go and I just can’t get it!

It is a book by an author who's novel about 'unremarkable folk', 'average beings' was made into a hugely successful TV series a few years ago.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 15/11/2025 11:45

The mug, I got it from the fact that the cover of the book looks like the mug. Fairly recent book. Irish writer.

WarrenTofficier · 15/11/2025 11:47

It is an alternative for the term zwischenzug in chess.

Oh my goodness, got it!! Thank you, I’ve been stuck on that for ages

The blue checks were sneaky!

My zero definitely stood out!

I enrolled on a dressmaking course once and it was hopeless. I just couldn't grasp how the pieces of paper were meant to relate to the thing I was trying to make.

I can relate - you can, however, vastly improve your visua-spatial skills by taking up a related activity you actually enjoy - mine improved off the scale after I took up life drawing. Not every activity inspires one to look properly - for example, if I enrolled on a house maintenance course, I would fail miserably, whereas my sister would love it - she likes activities to have a necessary purpose!

Oh dear God, the dog one took me forever!!! Thanks for the clues - would never have got it otherwise!

The dog was the first one I got, because I guessed wildly and it turned out to be correct - it's probably the only one I didn't need any help for, apart from the board games, books with famous surnames, cat, slippers and laptop.

Ekal · 15/11/2025 13:01

goingsoftinthead · 14/11/2025 13:34

Groan -that's an awful clue!! the picture not yours

I agree, it's terrible! The only part of the clue that guides one is the dog's name.

Ekal · 15/11/2025 13:02

Only the fruits on the throw/wrap/blanket to go. Can anyone give me a tiny hint? It's going to annoy me.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 15/11/2025 13:05

@Ekalit’s a children’s book by aa

LaserPumpkin · 15/11/2025 13:06

Many thanks, EineReiseDurchDieZeit, I have now completed the game and am already regretting doing it all at once. It's the same every year - I look forward to it, mean to take my time over the weeks approaching Christmas, and then can't think of anything else until I've finished! I used to be better at deferring gratification when I was six years old!

Ekal · 15/11/2025 13:38

Thanks for all the help with the clues. I don't think I'd ever complete a game without Mumsnet!

Me neither!

honeylulu · 15/11/2025 15:28

Finished here too. Thanks for all the tips and extra clues, some of them were especially obscure this year. I tried every permutation of "Czech mate" before getting the mug one. Would never have got there without you all!

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 15/11/2025 15:54

ifIwerenotanandroid · 15/11/2025 00:38

Finished, & I wouldn't have made it without the help here (& some vigorous googling), so thank you. And many thanks to the OP.

For anyone stuck on the laptop one, there's an unrelated film starring Jake Gyllenhaal with the same title.

ETA 2011 😀

Edited

And that explains why the title was so familiar and I got it straight away !
