United 24 Media:

🔹 Russia has created a large-scale disinformation network in Europe aimed at discrediting Ukrainian refugees and Ukraine as a whole. The most active campaign took place in Austria, Austrian outlet profil reports.

According to an investigation by local security services, the operation extended beyond Austria to other European countries. The network was coordinated by Austrian national Jan Marsalek, who investigators say has been working with Russian special services for many years. Since 2022, together with Bulgarian citizen Orlin Rusev, later detained in London, he organized the production and placement of stickers and graffiti with far-right and neo-Nazi symbols in public spaces.

These actions were intended to create the impression that such symbols were being spread by Ukrainians. Correspondence between the organizers shows a deliberate attempt to link Nazi imagery to Ukraine: extremist symbols were depicted in the colors of the Ukrainian flag, combined with the slogan “Glory to Ukraine,” and supplemented with offensive messages against Russians.

In addition, the participants created a network of websites imitating European branches of the Ukrainian Azov Regiment. According to journalists, FSB handlers directly instructed agents to spread Azov symbols across Europe, with the mandatory addition of a swastika to amplify the discrediting effect.

🔸 The Kremlin said that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte’s statement about preparing for war with Russia was irresponsible and showed a lack of understanding of the scale of destruction caused by World War II.

“They do not understand. And unfortunately, Mr. Rutte, making such irresponsible statements, simply does not understand what he is talking about,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

🙃 The return of Russian soldiers from the front has triggered a wave of violence, Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service reports.

The so-called “veterans of the special military operation” have already killed or maimed more than a thousand people. At least 551 deaths linked to the actions of Russian soldiers during leave, after injuries, or following the end of their contracts have been recorded.

⚡️Negotiations between the Ukrainian and US delegations in Berlin lasted more than 5 hours

The work will continue tomorrow morning.

🔹 Estonian President Alar Karis suggested that Hungary should be helped in paying fines for breaking its energy contracts with Russia.

According to Karis, some of the energy agreements signed between Hungary and Russia could remain in force until the 2040s.

He said that Hungary should abandon these contracts.

🔸 “It would be good to go to Kyiv. The plan is ready, but it is difficult to implement,” Pope Leo XIV said, quoted by Ansa.

According to the pontiff, the main obstacle is the security situation.

On December 9, during a visit to Rome, President Zelenskyy met with the Pope and invited him to Ukraine.

🔹 Shocking footage from Kostiantynivka, Donetsk region, filmed by a drone and on the ground. Just 20 km from Kramatorsk.

Today, the city is on fire. Burned high-rise buildings, a destroyed kindergarten, a damaged church.

The video shows one of the city’s quarters that was still completely intact just a few months ago. People who remain there are cooking food at the building entrance.

🔸 Russia has begun actively recruiting mercenaries in Iran, according to the Center for Countering Disinformation under Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council.

Leaflets offering to join the occupation forces have reportedly appeared en masse in several Iranian cities. Recruits are promised $20,000 in “cash” and about $2,000 per month.

The Center found that the advertisements lead to a Telegram channel created in November 2025, where recruitment is conducted in several languages. A recruiter interviewed by Radio Liberty journalists directly stated that the campaign is coordinated by the Russian side on Iranian territory.

“Despite attempts by the Russian embassy in Iran to deny involvement, this is a typical element of the Russian Federation’s systematic recruitment network, which has been seeking mercenaries in poor and crisis-stricken countries for many years. Iran is one of the most vulnerable targets due to its economic situation, high unemployment, and large numbers of Afghan refugees, who are often targeted by such schemes.

Recruitment in Iran is not an isolated incident but part of a broader Russian strategy to compensate for heavy losses and prepare for new offensive actions. According to intelligence estimates, Russia has already recruited at least 18,000 foreigners from 128 countries, often through deception, pressure, or financial exploitation,” the Center emphasized.

🔹 The Latvian parliament has approved the allocation of an additional €5 million to Ukraine for drones, Delfi reports.

Because Hungary blocked the decision on military assistance to Ukraine through the European Peace Facility, Latvia’s planned contributions for 2025 were not fully used.

As a result, parliament decided to redirect these funds to support Ukraine directly.

Lawmakers said the money, which will be managed by the Ministry of Defense, will support Ukraine and contribute to the development of Latvia’s dual-use technology industry.

Live:Ukraine

❗️President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is speaking with journalists. Here are the key points so far:

⚡️Zelenskyy has not yet received a response from the United States to the latest proposal on the peace plan prepared by Ukraine and its European partners.

⚡️Zelenskyy will meet with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and possibly with other European leaders. The meetings in Berlin will continue tomorrow.

⚡️The plan will not be something that everyone likes. Any version involves many compromises. The most important thing is that it is as fair as possible for Ukraine and effective. It must not be just a piece of paper but a meaningful step toward ending the war, so that after it is signed Russia has no opportunity to start a third act of aggression against the Ukrainian people.

⚡️When the negotiations expanded beyond the framework of the 20 point agreement, several additional groups joined the Ukrainian negotiating team. The economic track is represented by Economy Minister Oleksii Sobolev and Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko. The security track is represented by intelligence officials and Chief of the General Staff Andrii Hnatov.

⚡️Ukraine wanted to join NATO from the very beginning, but this was not supported by the United States and some European countries. Therefore bilateral security guarantees from the United States in the format of Article 5 of the NATO Charter, as well as guarantees from European partners and other countries, are already a compromise on Ukraine’s part. For Ukraine it is important that the guarantees from the United States are supported by the US Congress.

❗️Additional statements by President Zelenskyy from his conversation with journalists.

The issue of yesterday’s release of Belarusian political prisoners, 123 people, was discussed by Ukraine at the level of intelligence services. After that, the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate Kyrylo Budanov reported to Zelenskyy that Belarus does not want to transfer the political prisoners through EU countries but is ready to hand them over via Ukraine if the President of Ukraine supports this. Zelenskyy responded that he “certainly supports” it.

As of today, a fair option could be a ceasefire along the line of contact. Russia has a negative attitude toward this and responds by saying that Ukraine must leave Donbas. The United States proposed a compromise: Ukrainian troops would leave these territories and Russian troops would not enter them, calling it a “free Ukrainian zone.” Ukraine does not accept this idea without a mutual withdrawal of forces. At this point, there is no decision on this issue.

Poland has proposed that Zelenskyy make a visit on Friday, December 19. The President believes that the visit will not be postponed.

◾️On Monday, December 8, Zelenskyy told journalists that he had received a signal that Polish President Karol Nawrocki had invited him, but that the Polish side needed to name a date. Zelenskyy and Nawrocki have not yet met in person. The inauguration of Poland’s new president took place on August 6.

⚡️ Russia attacked Ukraine with 138 drones and one ballistic missile. Here is what is known so far about the consequences.

Zaporizhzhia. Eleven people were injured as a result of a Russian strike on the city. Among them are a child, a police officer, and two State Emergency Service rescuers.

Odesa region. Russian forces attacked energy facilities. There were no casualties. Power has already been restored to one hundred thousand consumers.

Donetsk region. In Krasnopillia, two people were injured. In Kostiantynivka, one person was killed and two were injured. Residential buildings were damaged.

Sumy region. As a result of Russian attacks on the region, residential buildings, a non residential facility, and a passenger car were damaged. No casualties were reported.

⚡️ The Kremlin said that NATO Secretary General Rutte’s statement about preparing for war with Russia is irresponsible and shows that he does not understand the scale of destruction caused by World War II.

“They do not understand it, and unfortunately Mr Rutte, by making such irresponsible statements, simply does not understand what he is talking about,” Kremlin spokesperson Peskov said.

🇭🇺Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán plans to bring 1.6 million questionnaires from Hungarians to the EU summit, who allegedly spoke out against aid to Ukraine.

"1.6 million returned national consultation questionnaires. That's how many people expressed their opinion on plans to raise taxes because of the war. I will take this with me to Brussels next week, where I will voice the position of the silent majority. I hope the armed forces won't charge anything for the excess weight," Orbán wrote on Facebook.

These are questionnaires from the so-called "national consultation" — a manipulative survey by Orbán's government regarding Ukraine's EU membership. The Prime Minister's team actively urged people to vote against Ukraine's accession, claiming it would negatively affect the lives of all Hungarians and cause huge losses to the country. There is also no information on how protected the votes in this "consultation" were from substitution and manipulation.

🇺🇦 🇺🇸 Negotiations between the Ukrainian and American delegations in Berlin will continue on Monday.

Zelenskyy's advisor Lytvyn informed journalists that the negotiations on December 14 lasted over five hours.

🇵🇱🇺🇦Zelenskyy will meet with Polish President Nawrocki for the first time on December 19 in Warsaw.

Nawrocki's spokesperson confirmed this. He also stated that the negotiations between the leaders will concern issues of security, economy, and history.

▪️ Earlier, Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski said that "President Zelenskyy would not lose his crown if, while passing through Poland, he asked for a visit to the Presidential Palace." Zelenskyy stated he was ready to come when he received the corresponding invitation.

Overnight, Moscow and a number of facilities in the Russian Federation were under drone attack. What is known now:

Moscow authorities reported from night until morning about allegedly shot down drones over the capital of the Russian Federation. The "Kovyor" (Carpet) plan was introduced at Sheremetyevo Airport.

Explosions were also heard in Belgorod — local authorities report a missile attack. Local Telegram channels write about a hit on the "Luch" TPP , which provides light and heat to part of the city.

The Astrakhan Gas Processing Plant might have also been under attack tonight. After a strike on it in September, the plant temporarily suspended operations.

Loud noises were also reported in Rostov Oblast — a power line was damaged in the Kamensky district. Residents of several microdistricts were left without water supply.

In total, the Russian Ministry of Defense claims 130 drones were shot down overnight over 12 regions.

Video 1 — Moscow, 2 — Belgorod, 3 — Astrakhan, 4 — Rostov Oblast

Russians launched 153 drones against Ukraine overnight, the Air Force reports.

Air defense neutralized 133 Russian UAVs, and another 17 hit 10 locations.

In particular, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast was under attack overnight. In Synelnykove district, a rescuer and an enterprise employee were injured. In Pavlohrad and Pyatykhatky, a transport enterprise and infrastructure were on fire.

Due to the shelling of the region, the railway's contact network was de-energized. A number of trains are delayed.

Kyiv Post:

The peace plan will not be one that pleases everyone, Zelensky said.

Other statements by the President:

The United States has not yet responded to Ukraine’s new proposals.”

“A diplomatic day is beginning in Berlin: meetings will take place with Chancellor Friedrich Merz and other EU leaders.”

Not everyone supports Ukraine’s NATO membership, so the compromise is bilateral security guarantees, Zelensky said.

Zelensky explained what Ukraine would do if the peace process fails.

“We cannot afford to think about that. I understand that we must approach everything realistically. If one or another process aimed at a peaceful settlement of this war does not work, if pressure on Russia fails, it is like running a long distance, like a marathon. You have to pull yourself together, find another path, and once again do everything possible to bring this war to an end,” Zelensky said.

For now, the only fair position is “we stand where we stand.” The sides remain in their positions and then try to resolve all issues through diplomacy. In response to Ukraine’s stance, Russia says Ukraine must withdraw from Donbas or it will occupy the region entirely, Zelensky said, responding to a question from Kyiv Post journalist Kateryna Zakharchenko about who should control a buffer zone in Donbas to prevent it from becoming a “gray zone” that Russia could once again use to prepare a new offensive.

Kyiv is willing to make major concessions, including over NATO, but analysts stress the peace effort hinges on Washington committing to a genuine pressure campaign against Moscow.

Ukraine is awaiting a US response to Kyiv’s latest peace proposal as Zelensky begins diplomatic meetings in Berlin.

Trump said he recently spoke with Putin.
“Yes, I spoke with him,” he said.
The US president did not provide details of the conversation.

❗️President Zelenskyy on the peace plan: Ukraine is counting on five documents.
“We are counting on five documents, some of them on security guarantees, approved by the US Congress. These would include a provision similar to NATO’s Article 5—a mirror of Article 5 for everyone in the Alliance. This would be voted on by Congress. There are agreements on this, and it is very important,” the president told reporters.

European leaders issue joint statement on Ukraine peace talks.
The United States and European leaders said they are committed to working together to provide Ukraine with credible security guarantees and to support economic recovery as part of an agreement to end the war.
The statement outlines the following commitments:
• Provide Ukraine with sustained and substantial support to build its armed forces. Ukraine’s army should remain at 800,000 personnel in peacetime to deter future aggression and defend its territory.
• Create a European-led “multinational force for Ukraine,” composed of volunteers from the “Coalition of the Resolute” and supported by the United States. The force would help rebuild Ukraine’s armed forces, secure its airspace, and maintain maritime security, including through operations on Ukrainian territory.
• Establish a US-led ceasefire monitoring and verification mechanism, with the participation of international organizations, to provide early warning of potential attacks, identify perpetrators, respond to violations, and support conflict-resolution and de-escalation measures.
• Introduce a legal obligation, subject to national procedures, to take action to restore peace and security in the event of a future armed attack. Such measures may include military, intelligence, logistical, economic, and diplomatic support.
• Invest in Ukraine’s future prosperity by providing significant resources for recovery and reconstruction, concluding mutually beneficial trade agreements, and considering the need for Russia to compensate Ukraine for the damage caused by the war. In this context, Russian sovereign assets in the EU remain frozen.
• Strongly support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

[bit more info]
The Security Service of Ukraine carried out a unique operation at the port of Novorossiysk, Russia, where Sub Sea Baby underwater drones struck a Russian Kilo-class submarine. The explosion inflicted critical damage on the vessel, effectively putting it out of service. The submarine was carrying four launchers for Kalibr cruise missiles, which Russia has used to carry out strikes against peaceful Ukrainian cities. A Varshavyanka-class submarine is estimated to cost approximately $400 million.

President Zelenskyy said that Ukraine supports the idea of a Christmas truce.

The EU has expanded sanctions against Russia’s “shadow fleet.”
The EU Council added five individuals and four companies to its sanctions list for supporting the shadow fleet. The restrictions target businessmen directly or indirectly linked to the state-owned oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil.
Sanctions were also imposed on shipping companies from the UAE, Vietnam, and Russia that own or operate tankers used to evade sanctions.

Russia continues to terrorize civilians in the Odesa region. Overnight, the enemy attacked the region with several dozen strike drones, said Oleh Kiper, head of the regional military administration.
As a result of the attack, a large-scale fire broke out at one of the enterprises.
“The fire engulfed a warehouse storing household appliances, including boilers and heaters. The blaze has now been completely extinguished by rescuers. A nearby logistics company’s warehouse was saved.
Fortunately, there were no casualties. Relevant services continue to work at the site.”

Japanese manga artist Kazuya Kuramoto created Battle Scar, a manga inspired by real stories of Ukrainian soldiers defending their country against Russia. Based on firsthand accounts and interviews, the manga is available in Japanese, French, Chinese, and English. Battle Scar is sold across bookstores in Japan and is avalable to purchase on Amazon.

According to the outlet, Kyiv insists that any ceasefire must take place without prior territorial concessions to Russia, with the maximum acceptable option being a freeze along the current front line.

Germany’s Quantum Systems and Ukraine’s Frontline Robotics have launched a joint venture to mass-produce Ukrainian combat-proven drones (www.kyivpost.com/post/66273) in Germany, with 100% of output destined for Ukraine’s Defense Forces. Companies say it's Germany’s first foreign production capacity for Ukraine.

A US official says, Trump “has been very, very clear he is not looking to put pressure on Ukraine” [oh look, pigs in the air again]
“He's just done his best to try and help define these issues, and whatever decision they ultimately make on their territorial issues or on these other outstanding issues will be up to them, and that's something we are very clear about.”

Live: Ukraine Telegram Highlights

❗️"Overall, unity was demonstrated. It was truly positive in the sense that it was the unity of the US, Europe, and Ukraine." Key statements from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's overnight conversation with journalists:
🔴There are no destructive points in the "peace plan" anymore. This does not mean it is perfect, but it is a very workable version.
🔴Ukraine is currently counting on five documents with the Americans. Part of them concerns the Congressional-approved analogue of Article 5 of the NATO Charter.
🔴The second document concerns reconstruction: Ukraine and the US are discussing money and the creation of a special fund. Yesterday, President Zelenskyy, during the negotiations, raised the issue of Ukrainian refugees for the first time, which could cost $70-$80 billion.
🔴The Ukrainian side also raised the issue of families who have lost a serviceman. It is very difficult for Ukraine to bear this financial responsibility, but it is our duty. Zelenskyy would like to see financial support for this program as well.
🔴Neither de jure nor de facto does Ukraine recognize Donbas as Russian. There is still no consensus on this issue.
🔴Ukraine and the US are discussing a "deterrence package": what weapons, training, equipment, funding, and troop numbers Ukraine needs.
🔴Yesterday, in addition to American security guarantees, security guarantees from the "Coalition of the Willing Europe+" were discussed — it includes Canada and other partners located outside of Europe.
🔴Today or tomorrow, the documents will be finalized — then the US will consult with the Russians, after which the negotiating teams will meet in the US (possibly as early as next weekend). After that, we will think about a meeting at the leaders' level, at least with the US President.
🔴From the frozen Russian assets, Ukraine expects a reparations loan of €40–€45$ billion per year (a total of €150–€200$ billion). These are needed as a Plan B if the war continues.
🔴German Chancellor Friedrich Merz proposed the idea of a Christmas truce. Ukraine supports it, as well as an energy truce, and any ceasefire.
🔴There is currently no talk of a referendum on the peace agreement. We are trying to do everything to avoid complicating the already difficult life of Ukrainians with certain decisions.

Only 9% of Ukrainians support holding elections during wartime, and more than 60% trust Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This is evidenced by the results of a Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) survey.
🔴 As of the end of November — beginning of December, 9% of Ukrainians are in favor of holding elections even before the end of hostilities. However, the majority — 57% — believe that elections are possible only after the war is completely over (photo 1).
🔴 63% of Ukrainians are "ready to endure the war for as long as it takes." Another 1% answered they are ready to endure for about a year, and 21% could not answer.
🔴 Ukrainian trust in the US and NATO has almost halved in a year (photo 2), while trust in their President has increased by 9% — currently, 61% of citizens trust Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Another 32% do not trust him (photo 3).
🔴 KIIS notes that the level of trust in Zelenskyy dropped by approximately 10% after the scandal with the "Mindich tapes," but recovered to the previous level after the dismissal of the Head of the Presidential Office, Andriy Yermak, and increased pressure from the US.

🇹🇷 Turkey shot down an unknown drone over the Black Sea — F-16 fighters were scrambled.
It turned out that the drone "got out of control." It was shot down in a safe zone, away from residential areas, to avoid risks to the civilian population. Its ownership is not yet known.

Overnight, Russia launched 69 drones at Ukraine. Air defense forces shot down 57 of them.
🔴Zaporizhzhia suffered the most damage. An enemy drone struck a multi-story residential building. Three people were injured; one man is in critical condition.
🔴 In the Korop community of Chernihiv Oblast, a drone attack killed seven cows and damaged a cowshed and agricultural machinery.

That review is long overdue (oh, I'm.a poet and didn't know it).
...
However lets hope it's an equal opportunity review, and is not just used as a convenient excuse for kicking what many regard as the XRW.

Hard agree.

And hard agree.

It's long been a feature of influence-buying by Russia and many others to play at "helping" all sides (usually some more than others), to create obligation /incrimination across the board.

The theory being that regardless who gets into power, that person / party will be reluctant to blow the whistle on that "help".

Very seductive, and absolutely needs someone to stand up and say "fuck that for a game of soldiers."

https://understandingwar.org/research/russia-ukraine/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-december-15-2025/

Key Takeaways

  1. US, Ukrainian, and European officials reportedly agreed on unspecified security guarantees for Ukraine during a peace negotiation meeting in Berlin, Germany, on December 15.
  2. Ukrainian forces conducted an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) strike against a Russian submarine for the first time in naval history on the night of December 14 to 15.
  3. Ukrainian forces continue counterattacking in the Kupyansk direction as Russian ultranationalist milbloggers acknowledge the severity of the situation for Russian forces.
  4. Russian forces are striking Ukrainian logistics lines in Odesa Oblast with various air launched munitions, including glide bombs, highlighting Ukraine’s urgent need for a well provisioned and diverse air defense umbrella.
  5. Russian strikes appear to be advancing the Kremlin’s stated goal of degrading Ukraine’s energy infrastructure by splitting Ukraine’s power grid in half. Ukraine requires Western-provided air defense systems and partner support for its drone interceptor development to safeguard itself against increasingly devastating strikes on its energy infrastructure.
  6. Ukrainian forces recently advanced in western Zaporizhia Oblast. Russian forces recently advanced in the Kostyantynivka-Druzhkivka tactical area.

https://understandingwar.org/research/russia-ukraine/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-december-16-2025/

Key Takeaways

  1. The Council of the European Union confirmed that European countries and the United States will provide “robust” security guarantees to Ukraine as part of the peace deal to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.
  2. The Kremlin explicitly rejected US and European offers to provide Ukraine with “NATO-like” security guarantees as part of a peace deal and continued to signal its unwillingness to compromise on Russia’s territorial claims to Ukraine’s sovereign territory.
  3. Russia launched an information campaign to frame the European Union and individual European countries as an enemy of the Russian people comparable to Nazi Germany in an effort to further militarize Russian society.
  4. The Kremlin is trying to downplay ongoing Ukrainian counterattacks in Kupyansk as Russian ultranationalist milbloggers continue to acknowledge the severity of the situation for the Russian forces.
  5. Ukrainian forces recently advanced near Pokrovsk and marginally advanced near Kupyansk. Russian forces recently advanced in the Dobropillya and Kostyantynivka-Druzhkivka tactical areas.

I have to say that when people (well, one person) comments that this thread shouldnt be rude about Trump, it's very hard not to be when faced with the sheer towering crassness of his response to Rob Reiner and his wife's murder.

And this guy has to face a snake like Putin. We really are doomed.
