Help me write my big fat quiz!

BigFatQuizzer · 15/10/2025 17:35

Hi everyone,

I have to write a quiz for a group of people of mixed abilities, mostly over 55s and it needs to be fun and lighthearted more than competitive.

It is a big fat quiz of the year so I’m hoping to include some relevant events in 2025 but everything I google is war, politics and crime related 😏

Successful formats in the past have been True or False rounds and easy general knowledge.

If anyone has a good question or round I could include I’d be very grateful! Thank you

English Village or West Indian cricketer? You can poach those online.

Football club nicknames.

I think a picture round is a good shout, as it can be on the table when the participants arrive and gets them talking! Flags, or company logos sort of thing.I remember doing identify celebrities from there baby photos. I have also done taste rounds in the past. The ones I remember we were given weird and wonderful flavours of crisps, Wkd, and jelly beans to identify.

RaraRachael · 15/10/2025 22:00

We usually have 2 picture rounds - one at the start and one for during the interval

Not more flags 😆

Logos is good 👍

I will try to send you some of our recent quiz rounds. We regularly do a pub quiz and take turns to set it. I’ve still got a few of the last rounds we did when we set it. I will attempt to PM!

Cinaferna · 15/10/2025 23:04

You could Google fun or good things that happened in 2025.

E.g. in Jan this year a 17 year old was the youngest person to win world darts championship. What was his name? ( Or give his name - Luke Littler- and ask his age)

Or what was the name of the first commercial spacecraft to land on the moon in March this year: was it Red Phantom, Green Spectre or Blue Ghost?

itsmeafterall · 15/10/2025 23:05

Dead or alive for celebrities is always fun

Except if you're the dead celeb of course.

RowenaCoxwell · 15/10/2025 23:06

ive made up plenty of cheese or service station type rounds where I take a topic and make up plausible sounding fakes eg Real Bond girl name or fake, mushroom or madeuproom, and most recently real Aldi fake or fake Aldi fake-they take quite a while to write but they’re great fun.
A round of “dead or alive” always seems to go down well too even though it might appear to be in poor taste-basically a list of celeb names and people say if they’re dead or alive.
Another fun round is to tell a joke and ask people to supply the punchline, extra pints if it’s funnier than the original.

SkiAndTravelTheWorldWithMyDog · 15/10/2025 23:12

pict of famous logos always goes down well.

LeanToWhatToDo · 15/10/2025 23:16

A round where they have to guess the year female health related discoveries were made.

eg - the first fully detailed clitoris in a medical textbook was 1998 (Helen O'Connell)

In 1993, the NIH finally required women and minorities to be included in medical trials for the first time.

Tampons first tested with human blood was 2023

First used anatomically correct female crash test dummy 2023 (Women are 73% more likely to be seriously injured in frontal car crashes)

Although 43% of women vs. 31% of men experience sexual dysfunction - despite this HRT is charged for whereas Sidnafil (Viagra) is free in 2025

Cinaferna · 15/10/2025 23:47

There's a brilliant site online: Shakespeare or Beyonce - who wrote it? Harder than you think. Some of those could be fun.

BigFatQuizzer · 16/10/2025 01:45

Oh thank you. These are all brilliant

Do you only want questions based on this year or just one round of them and different questions? I did one round for the Christmas quiz last year and did 12 questions, one for each month. I got them off a website that I’ll try to find to see if it’s been updated to this year, or you can google “what happened in January 2025” etc. the following week, we went to another quiz in our local pub that used the same website but for the whole quiz so I’d already read through the answers and we won 😂😂.

I agree an emoji round always goes down well with all ages. Or if you want to do the chocolate idea, you don’t need to buy 20 chocolate bars, you can already get a round off google.

Chat GPT can be good but also frustrating to get the level right. Last Christmas it tried to give me one of the questions as “what colour is the green triangle in Quality Street?” 😂😂

Yes, that’s exactly what I was hoping for. A round of questions based on each month of 2025 and then general knowledge or fun rounds after that. But so far it’s just war, politics with a smattering of sport 😏

Dickens or chickens. Guess whether the answer is a weird breed of chicken or a Dickens' character.

Cryptic clues to sweets or biscuits.

Historic Georges (or Williams or Henrys).

Country opposites eg high seas, plastic, me summary = Netherlands, China, USA. (Everyone argues and hates this round!😀)

Love the dickens or chickens

mackerella · 16/10/2025 08:20

The Guardian's Thursday quiz is good fun and includes a mixture of general knowledge and "what happened this week?" questions. You could probably find some fun stories from earlier this year in there.

Let me do some digging! When is it? At Christmas time?

Buy 20 chocolate bars. Take off wrappings. Cut in half. Take photos and print off a sheet with them on.

Name the chocolate bar!

(I was once in a billy no mates random team and we beat the local quiz specialists with this one as we all loved chocolate and scored 19/20 and only scored 1 or 2)

Or theres rolling webcam footage of places in the UK. Its on youtube and can get it on TV. Take photos of 20x, edit out the names overlaid, and bang...you have a name the place quiz.

Edited

I did a similar one but with biscuits. It was awesome.

Countryfiler · 16/10/2025 09:32

@BigFatQuizzer I’ve sent you a message with some rounds if you want to use them. I’ve done an end of year one where I did a whole died in each month round too. Bit morbid but gave clues to the person and which month they died in the previous year. I’ve also done the food tasting idea (crisps or herbs and spices, but quite a bit of work to set up).

Mydogisagentleman · 16/10/2025 09:37

Blank monopoly board.
Places, taxes, community chest etc to be filled in.
It's harder than it sounds

RaraRachael · 16/10/2025 09:54

Gosh the quizzes I go to sound boring by comparison to some of these. We usually have 2 picture rounds then just stuff like geography, history, sport , music, telly etc.

I think there would be a mutiny if we were faced with Dickens or chickens and Beyonce or Shakespeare 🤣

Ramona75 · 19/10/2025 13:06

There are some great quizzes on Etsy and family pub quiz here - Loads of questions and variety. Getting my Christmas one from here too, saves spending hours making them :-)

GellerYeller · 19/10/2025 13:23

At our local we’ve had Dead or Alive but it was all old or discontinued products. You had to say which were still on sale, e.g. Texan bars and fruit polos are dead. There were a few Celebs sprinkled in including Pete Burns where the answer is Dead, OR Dead or Alive(his band).
You can do Oasis; topical this year, but make it fair for non-fans with facts to guess-true or false: they got a cut of every pint sold at Wembley(true), Boneheads real name is Paul Bone(false, Paul Arthurs), how many UK tickets were sold, what was the cheapest face value ticket etc. You can give multiple choice answers to those to get people guessing. Edit to add Liam’s name is actually William!
Glastonbury round, featuring this years headliners and headlines? Kneecap, BobVylan causing controversy. Who joined Rod in the legends slot?
You could certainly add a ‘royals in 2025 round’ based on the last week alone!
