Help me write my big fat quiz!

BigFatQuizzer · 15/10/2025 17:35

Hi everyone,

I have to write a quiz for a group of people of mixed abilities, mostly over 55s and it needs to be fun and lighthearted more than competitive.

It is a big fat quiz of the year so I’m hoping to include some relevant events in 2025 but everything I google is war, politics and crime related 😏

Successful formats in the past have been True or False rounds and easy general knowledge.

If anyone has a good question or round I could include I’d be very grateful! Thank you

My neighbour does the quizzes for our village pub. He always includes a picture round - we have a a sheet and have to identify football team from shirt, flags (which country?), famous paintings (which artist), dogs (breed name) famous sights (which country), actors (name them), Album covers (name the artist). The list goes on!

A rebus puzzle round is fun you can Google loads of them.
Last one I was at had a picture round of types of flowers.

Mumteedum · 15/10/2025 17:51

I remember one where we had a picture round to name cartoon characters...some from my childhood and some recent. That was fun.

BigFatQuizzer · 15/10/2025 17:51

Flowers and dogs might go down well. Googling rebus round. Thank you

AI is good for this kind of thing, as long as you sense-check the answers.

A 'name that tune' round is always good - play a few seconds of the intro to reasonably well known songs for people to guess - include plenty of 70s/80s/90s if your audience is mainly over 55 because they'll know them even if their tastes are for more recent stuff.

Mumteedum · 15/10/2025 17:54

How about a round about awards this year?

Oscar winners

Nobel Prize nominees

Village vegetable growers ... Jam makers 😁

Any controversies etc ....

redfairy · 15/10/2025 18:15

Tom, Dick or Harry round. All answers related to the names

Theoldwrinkley · 15/10/2025 18:19

I think a collective nouns round is fun....a 'lovliness' of ladybirds, a crash of rhinos, a parliament of owls etc.

BigFatQuizzer · 15/10/2025 18:28

Oh yes, keep them coming. I like the Tom, Dick and Harry round!

Dickens or chickens. Guess whether the answer is a weird breed of chicken or a Dickens' character.

Cryptic clues to sweets or biscuits.

Historic Georges (or Williams or Henrys).

Country opposites eg high seas, plastic, me summary = Netherlands, China, USA. (Everyone argues and hates this round!😀)

Oooh, yes - love things like this!

I remember once doing a photo quiz on a similar theme - Tate or trash - guessing whether something was an art installation or just old junk randomly lying round.

RaraRachael · 15/10/2025 18:43

@columnatedruinsdomino what does the Country Opposites round mean?

I've done lots of quizzes and hate rounds where there's a choice of 2 things like true or false.

We've had rounds where all the answers are colours or numbers.

Any picture round where the answers are things from yesteryear are fun.

whatwasthatnoise · 15/10/2025 18:53

A music round about bands that have made a comeback this year? Mostly thinking about Oasis... Which song has been at number 1 longest this year (multiple choice). Find albums that are 30/40/50 year old this year?

MrsMoastyToasty · 15/10/2025 18:56

How about an "also known as" round? Give them a list of celebrities real names and ask them to provide their stage names.

JG24 · 15/10/2025 18:59

Do the participants all know each other? If so badly Photoshop some of their faces onto famous films scenes (think sound of music, et, batman). You can do an easy guess the film or make it harder and do the year then film was released in the UK
Bad Photoshop makes it funnier

Timeforatincture · 15/10/2025 18:59

A round of questions about the town you are in could be fun. Eg what are the shops either side of Greggs, who does the blue plaque at 111 th high street commemorate, who opened the new town hall - that sort of thing.

JG24 · 15/10/2025 18:59

Emoji rounds are good,
I think I did one during COVID that was illnesses?? But you can do songs, films etc

Navigatinglife100 · 15/10/2025 19:02

Buy 20 chocolate bars. Take off wrappings. Cut in half. Take photos and print off a sheet with them on.

Name the chocolate bar!

(I was once in a billy no mates random team and we beat the local quiz specialists with this one as we all loved chocolate and scored 19/20 and only scored 1 or 2)

Or theres rolling webcam footage of places in the UK. Its on youtube and can get it on TV. Take photos of 20x, edit out the names overlaid, and bang...you have a name the place quiz.

Aparecium · 15/10/2025 19:41

Set some questions about K-Pop Demon Hunters 😄

Cheese or service station is another good one 😁

menopausalmare · 15/10/2025 19:51

A local picture round of 'where is this postbox?'
Celebrities as babies.

BigFatQuizzer · 15/10/2025 19:52

Haha I can guarantee nobody will get the K-pop questions!

As a cheese lover with a geeky interest in service stations, that would be my dream round!

This is what Chat GPT and Microsoft copilot excel at. A fairly professional quiz can be knocked together in 15 minutes. Just tell it what you want the rounds to be about. Refine them to suit various abilities. Don't worry if you haven't used them before. Really easy.

You may well be right, but where's the fun in that?

Sporcle is stuffed full of quizzes on all topics. That might be a good place to look for ideas.

What about a picture round of people who won various reality TV shows? Bake Off, Celebrity Traitors, ordinary Traitors, Masterchef, Sewing Bee and no doubt dozens of others I don't watch. (Depends on when you have to have the quiz finished, as the first two won't finish for a few more weeks.)
