I'm watching the results unfold in the Irish Presidential election and am genuinely shocked that Donegal gave front runner Catherine Connolly 80% of the vote.

Why is that? I don't really know much about Irish politics.

Heather Humphreys concedes to Catherine Connolly. Well done Catherine, congratulations on another left wing win on these isles. 👏

Donegal is quite Conservative. Connolly is a left wing Independent.

Generally speaking the President does tend to be left of centre.

All respect to Humphreys because she did receive 'awful sectartarian abuse'. Her conceding speech here. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cn763jkdp03t

Witness: Kebatu was "confused" and directed to train station by prison staff, Sky News reports

He knew he was being deported - was told to go to station and catch a train and given directions by a PO

I'm taking that reporting from Sky with the huge pinch of salt it deserves.

PandoraSocks · 25/10/2025 14:49

From the BBC:

We know a prison officer from HMP Chelmsford has been suspended over this error - but sources tell me this cannot have been down to one person alone.

Several people are involved when an offender is released from custody.

A senior prison staffer says: "This is down to a series of mistakes probably because staff are overworked and in short supply. It’s not just one prison officer who’s to blame. That would be unfair”.

The witness is a lorry driver who showed the journalists his prison pass with a time and date matching the time/date of the prisoners release

More great writing from Yuliia.

When we have digital ID, it will be trivial to see who actually voted.

I wonder how a proposal that people get out and vote get a 2% reduction in income tax might work out.

And more amusingly, who would vote against it ?

SerendipityJane · 25/10/2025 16:30

Looking eastwards, it's interesting the quiet collapse in the international coal market could finally create a Russian implosion.

(Now you can see why Reform hate green energy).

Part of the reduction in price is because China is - slowly, but surely - removing coal from it's strategy.

But Nige wants us Welshies back down the pit! I had my Davy lamp and pick all ready.

Edited

A friend from 6th form had a DF who worked for the NCB. He used to fly over power stations to check the levels of coal during the miners strike (which was how my friend knew we were never going to have power cuts).

He had a proper Davy lamp at home. And the stick that foremen would use to gauge whether a shift had dug the required distance (with two ways of holding it).

I’ve been reading the sky news updates thinking “WTAF?”

Appears he had no idea what’s going on either - utter shit show

For some reason I am remembering the - tragic - end to The Great Escape.

I can easily imagine someone from 50% of the planet hearing a phrase "Shot whilst attempting to escape"

(For the more dim readers this is in no way an expression of sympathy for a someone convicted of sexual assault).

He was told to get the train to Liverpool Street Station but when reaching Stratford it could well have said change for Liverpool Street Station.

It's all a bit Ealing Comedy if it wasn't so serious. The prison service and the probation service has indeed been broken via privatisation under the Tories.

placemats · 25/10/2025 18:48

To add no one said Britain was Broken when a paedophile was recently stabbed in the neck by fellow inmates. No one is calling for an inquiry into why that happened.

For dim readers etc...

DuncinToffee · 25/10/2025 18:49

Privatisation and then since 2010 cuts to the CSJ, court backlogs and prison overcrowding.

Another mess for Labour to sort.

I think I must be dim. Such is life.. I couldn’t care less if a paedophile was killed in prison. In fact I’m glad he now won’t have the opportunity to rape another child/ren, and ruin their life / lives. Oh dear. What a shame. Never mind. Etc. Etc. And so on.

Are you in favour of the death penalty?

Maybe that was deliberate - leave prisoners to kill each other.
Obviously that doesn’t make it a safe environment for staff but hey ho.

Efacsen · 25/10/2025 19:03

Chelmsford prison was inspected in Jan 2024 and noted to be struggling then

Early release programme has resulted in more releases

Released in error has increased by 128% in the last 12 months

Why are you posting on this thread. I respectfully leave you lot alone - can you possibly return the favour. I'm sure you're not that dim to understand the rules.

Plus you didn't get the nuance of my post.

PandoraSocks · 25/10/2025 19:05

I don't care that he is dead. But it shouldn't have been allowed to happen. Prisons should be safe places for prisoners and prison staff.
