Anybody else doing Sober October?

I know there’s been a long running thread for years for dry January but I fancy having a break through October, in preparation for Xmas, give the liver a break beforehand - that is all meant very tongue in cheek 😜

Anyone fancy joining?

Look at the time - it’s nearly hot chocolate & hot water bottles for bedtime - that means we’ve got through another evening!
Unless we haven’t, in which case let’s get back on the Best Behaviour Bus tomorrow 🤗
Sleep well, all

hels71 · 12/10/2025 08:04

Thank you x I'm doing ok so far! But now eating far too much chocolate!

Trodincatsickagain · 12/10/2025 08:53

Happy Day 12!

Good morning on this somewhat grey and gloomy day and there’s a definite nip in the air here in the SE. Still nice to get out earlier for a walk even if the running 🏃‍♀️ somewhat failed me 😄

I was tucked up in bed by the time you posted @HotTiredDog - I could never date again as I’d never be able to stay up late enough to see the evening through!

@hels71 Same here! In fact I have purposely not bought any the last few days because my consumption is getting out of hand, however I did by those awful TUC biscuits with the cheese filling, (I think it must be a throw back to childhood), which are probably no better for me.

How is everyone doing - Are you noticing any benefits yet? Is your sleep getting any better, Is the anxiety improving? Are you white knuckling it or have you found it relatively easy abstaining?

If you’re not quite feeling those benefits yet, hang in there as we’re heading into the 3rd week soon and you’ll all soon be springing out of your beds! 😁

Morning on day 12 !! What an achievement 😊.
Another one who was in bed before @HotTiredDog posted. Slept like a log until DH’s alarm went off for work at 5.45am ( farm worker). I got up and went for a dog walk at 7am. Also gloomy here SW.
Just had a bath and am heading into town shortly followed by a food shop.
Have a frantically busy week at work ahead including an evening presentation on Tuesday so 🤞won’t have time to miss the drink- although there will be wine etc with dinner on Tuesday but I’ll be driving anyway .
Hope everyone else slept well and has a lovely day x

Trodincatsickagain · 12/10/2025 09:24

Lovely update @Nearlyadoctor, a very busy week ahead but sounds like you’ve got this! 💪

Bugger - wrote thread, lost it - summary: hope you’re all enjoying your Sunday, getting jobs done prior to the new week and ideally getting a bit of fresh autumn air in your lungs 🌬️

Texanchilli · 12/10/2025 14:32

Well done to everyone on getting this far. Those who’ve slipped up, hey, we’ve all done similar things in the past. I’ve tried dry January/february/august/September/october countless times before and not made it to the end.

I am finding it ok. I do miss having a glass of wine in the evening, but a glass always turns into a bottle. I will be interested to see if we save money this month.

hels71 · 12/10/2025 15:31

I miss a glass or two in the evenings too. Still trying to find an alternative. I've lost 1.7kg though....so that's a bonus!!!

Same here - if I open a bottle on Friday night, I will often finish it.

I bought myself a bag and pair of trousers that I’ve had my eye on for a while with the money that I’ve saved so far - it felt good to treat myself with something other than alcohol.

Wow! @hels71 1.7kg is really good going for 11 days! That must be such a motivation to keep at it.

DH just texted and asked did I fancy him picking up a nice bottle of wine for dinner on his way home from work. I so wanted to say yes , as I haven’t told a soul in RL I’m doing this. Just replied - I’m fine thanks 😊.
Will have a Diet Coke I think 🤔

Trodincatsickagain · 12/10/2025 17:50

Well done @Nearlyadoctor - I am very pleased in some ways that I live alone as I’m not sure I would be as strong if my OH was drinking.

OP posts:
Nearlyadoctor · 12/10/2025 17:55

He didn’t buy any wine as I didn’t want any, I’m not sure I could have stayed strong if he did 😁

Trodincatsickagain · 12/10/2025 20:13

Evening All - Hope that everyone has had a good Sunday, whether pottering or getting those jobs done for the week and I hope that everyone is feeling buoyed up with their successes so far and that it carries us all through to next week.

Stay strong 💪 people and have a good evening!

Great determination to say No, well done Nearly 💐

HotTiredDog · 12/10/2025 21:54

It’s the end of the weekend - and if you managed it AF, very well done!
What a great place to start the next calendar week from. And if you didn’t, then hey, it’s a new week - go for it!

Im so chuffed as I got through a Big Sunday Meal with the family, 6 inc 3 oldies, without a drop!! Came close with a “ooh just the one” but had a pint of squash instead.

Sleep well all x

darkmoor · 12/10/2025 22:09

Nice to hear about your weekends! Running and shopping for me.

It is a big help that DH is doing Sober October too, that’s impressive @Nearlyadoctor.

Find it hard early evenings, particularly at weekends. Sharing things that helped me in case any use: upbeat music, lighting candles, holding a mug of herbal tea, new TV programmes - and eating surgary treats. Other tips to surf the urge are welcome!

Nearlyadoctor · 13/10/2025 06:14

Well that was a shitty nights sleep 😂- I don’t normally touch caffeine after midday and had both a coffee mid afternoon and a coke ( Pepsi Max) and feel like I haven’t slept a wink.
At least no alcohol 😂😂.
Have a good day everyone

Well done @HotTiredDog that was a definite achievement x

Trodincatsickagain · 13/10/2025 06:42

Day 13!!

Good morning everyone - such great updates and It seems like we’re really getting into the swing of things now and at this rate, in it for the long haul.

Well done @HotTiredDog sounds like a lovely day and settling for a pint of juice instead if a glass or two is a real win!

Sympathies @Nearlyadoctor I’m sensitive too with caffeine and know that rubbish, wired, nights sleep youre talking about.

You need to start that knitting 🧶 @darkmoor 😁, honestly I find myself concentrating so hard just to follow the pattern that I forget all about that glass of wine!

I hope that everybody has a good day and lets keep that positivity about the week ahead 💪

HotTiredDog · 13/10/2025 09:18

You do live dangerously with caffeine after lunch, Nearly!

What are you up to today, TrodIn? Hope you feel as well as possible - should be better than you did in September 😁

Im en route to an urgent hospital appointment with DParents for DM’s dementia & new-found propensity for falling 🤞🤞 Gotta say the NHS is wonderful when you find the right people. I have a travel mug of tea & an emergency flapjack so feel we can cope with anything between us!

Nearlyadoctor · 13/10/2025 18:08

Well I’ve failed 😞- got home after a particularly rough day and poured myself a G&T and now I’ve drunk it, literally straight down!! So cross with myself - thought I could just keep quiet but then feel I need to be accountable to you guys as no one in RL knows I’m even trying to do SO.
Im sorry 😢

Nearlyadoctor · 13/10/2025 18:10

I didn’t really even enjoy that much - just needed something iykwim 🙄

Trodincatsickagain · 13/10/2025 18:12

Evening!

God it’s been a tough day today and at 3pm all I could think about was buying a bottle and having a glass of wine tonight. I knew I couldn’t give in but I felt really sorry for myself and wanted to just sit on the floor and have a tantrum at how unfair it all was. 😄 Pleased to say that it soon passed and normal service has now resumed.

@HotTiredDog I hope that the hospital appointment went ok? You have a lot to deal with and it must be very sad and upsetting seeing your parents go through this. I lost both my parents to illness fairly young but my DG had dementia and I remember how tough and emotionally draining it was on my Mum, so make sure you look after yourself too.

Hope everyone else had had a good or at least uneventful day and a relaxing evening.

I was only a hair away from it myself earlier, So don’t feel bad, or say sorry, you know the drill, just hop back on! You’ve done so well and 12 days is such an achievement.
