Anybody else doing Sober October?

Trodincatsickagain · 29/09/2025 16:54

I know there’s been a long running thread for years for dry January but I fancy having a break through October, in preparation for Xmas, give the liver a break beforehand - that is all meant very tongue in cheek 😜

Anyone fancy joining?

Day 8 People!

Good morning - hoping that everyone had a good nights sleep or that their sleep is getting better? I went off at just before 10 last night and slept through till 5:30, not even a toilet break so there’s a win!

@HotTiredDog, I’m so sorry to hear about your Mum, what a worry! Falling at that age is so dangerous and they were very lucky that it wasn’t more serious. I really hope that your strong words have finally got through, but how brilliant that you coped with it all with nothing more than an AF beer!

Hoping that everyone has a calm and serene day 😄 and Keep on keeping on with those gains peeps! 💪

Seven and a half solid hours TrodIn - wow! would you have even imagined that before this month?
Enjoy your days, all 💐

Nearlyadoctor · 08/10/2025 08:12

@HotTiredDog - sorry to hear about your DM, hope she’s just shaken and no damage done.
Well done everyone , day 8. I can’t say I’ve noticed any improvement in sleep as yet but fingers crossed it will come . Just holding onto the fact that @Trodincatsickagain is a few days ahead of the rest of us.

HotTiredDog · 08/10/2025 09:24

Good point, Nearlyadoctor - she is doing Sober October-&-a-bit!
Thanks for your kind words, I hope everyone else is as lovely to you today 💐

Youngatheart00 · 08/10/2025 10:56

I’m ashamed to say I fell off the wagon pretty spectacularly yesterday.

I had to deal with some particularly upsetting divorce admin and I crisis called a good friend who took me for a late lunch. We shared a bottle of wine, then had a cocktail. When I got home I opened a bottle (the only one I had in the house and it wasn’t even chilled).

Feel rough as anything today, and guess I deserve it. disappointed I cracked on day 7 but trying to reconcile the benefits a week off will have had (I never get hangovers either so just goes to show the tolerance….for me to feel like crap today)

Back on the wagon today and hoping to see the rest of the month out with no further blips.

Nearlyadoctor · 08/10/2025 11:10

@Youngatheart00 - onwards and upwards and as you rightly say a week off will have had it’s benefits. Try not to be too hard on yourself, divorce is hard.
Todays another day and all that 💐

Trodincatsickagain · 08/10/2025 12:04

I second that @Youngatheart00. No need to feel bad, it’s all par of the course and I think all of these dry challenges are not necessarily about being 100% perfect but about giving us a chance to think about our drinking - so well done for coming back today and take it easy!

Evening All! Hope everyone had had a good day?

Well, after my good nights sleep I’ve spent the day feeling tired and in a crappy mood 😄 It didn’t help that as I was down the fruit and veg section in Tesco, I suddenly noticed that they’ve now starting displaying wine in there too! There is just no getting away from it and for a minute I was sorely tempted, but very glad I didn’t cave and as I’m sitting here now, that urge for wine has gone and I’m ready to push on for another day!

Happy evening Peeps!

What a ridiculous place to try to market alcohol to customers! I’m not one for writing to a company to express my views but in this case I would - it isn’t really acceptable is it?!

Anyway, to more prescient matters - sorry you had a bit of a bad patch today, that’s rather unfair of the world to make you feel like that when you’re being so controlled & strong 😊

@Youngatheart00I concur with the thought that some scenarios just aren’t covered by this AF campaign, and yours is one of them. You did the right thing! Best wishes for the rest of the divorce process, & we look forward to hearing that your next drink is a celebration of when the darn thing is over!

To share some good news - DM hasn’t had a fall today!

Trodincatsickagain · 09/10/2025 07:48

Good morning from day 9! Who would have thought we would get this far 🥳.

The weekend is looming and I have to be honest that I did struggle last weekend. I’m ok Friday night and Sunday but it’s Saturday that the urge for a drink is at it strongest, I guess so habitual. I’m off out for the early part of the evening but will make sure that I have some thought out treats in beforehand, instead of just raiding the cupboards!

Hope everybody slept well/better? and yes ime, it definitely takes a good 10 days before sleep improves - keep on keeping on! 💪

Morning all!
Yes, we definitely are doing so well, day 9 is a heck of an achievement, (with or without a little blip cos of Life).
Thanks for keeping us going, TrodIn.
Hope you all have a good day 💐

Nearlyadoctor · 09/10/2025 09:42

Day 9 - well done everyone. I think this weekend will be the hardest just because I’ve got to the stage of thinking I deserve a drink for doing so well 😂😂

Yes need to keep thinking of the reasons we are doing this, especially at weekends!
For me the thread about the poor mumsnetter’s brother who died from the damage done to his body by alcohol (referenced earlier in this thread) was so sobering that have needed less willpower not to drink than normal!

Trodincatsickagain · 09/10/2025 16:59

Love it! 😁@Nearlyadoctor and so true!

Absolutely @darkmoor, that thread still haunts me, but it’s 9 days now of the liver having a well earned break and apparently even after a week the liver starts the job of healing. There really are so many gains to be had at sticking with this to the end.

All good I hope?
Sleep well

Trodincatsickagain · 10/10/2025 07:31

Good Morning on Day 10!

How is everyone? Anybody get any nice plans for the weekend or just having a nice relax at home?

I will be getting some fever tree tonics in and something NOT chocolate related, (as my consumption is definitely going up!) for the evenings, just to treat myself. I will also remind myself how lovely that early Sunday morning run is (I use run loosely 😁) without a hangover and I’m always so pleased I didn’t drink the night before.

Hope that you had a good evening and slept well too @HotTiredDog? Let us know how you’re doing this morning - I love all the updates and it keeps me going!

OP posts:
HotTiredDog · 10/10/2025 08:33

Morning TrodIn,
Fully admire your intentions of a chocolate-free evening, keep on going with that! I succumbed to candied nuts last night, oh but they were good Grin
DH was out last night so DMiL & I enjoyed some quality gardening & realised that we’ve missed the start of s6 of All Creatures G&S so we’ll be catching up on that together 🥰

If anyone is going out this weekend, worry not - you’ve still got this 💪

Trodincatsickagain · 10/10/2025 08:48

That sounds like a really lovely evening @HotTiredDog 😊 candid nuts are my thing too!

Funny you mentioning All creatures g&s; I’m old enough to have watched it first time round and absolutely loved it, read all the books too (wish I’d kept hold of them because they’re an absolute fortune now, even second hand) but I haven’t watched the new series - I’ll give this a go tonight as I’m really struggling to find something to get into at the moment, throw in a bit of knitting too and that’s my evening sorted. 🤣

OP posts:
Nearlyadoctor · 10/10/2025 09:38

Morning everyone - totally forgot All Creatures G&S last night as well, as we have started watching 3rd series of Blue Lights.
Like @Trodincatsickagain i remember the original , have most of it on video or dvd still and read all the books.
I’ve got a late clinic today 12-7pm so hopefully by the time I get home etc I will be past the craving for a drink ( my worst time is 5.30-6.30 🤷‍♀️)
Thats this evening sorted All creatures from yesterday and an episode of Blue Lights 😊.
We’ve got this !!!

Trodincatsickagain · 10/10/2025 10:41

Sounds like you’ve got it all sorted 💪 @Nearlyadoctor but I don’t envy your late clinic, come 7pm I’m done for! 😄 Off now to google Blue Lights and see if I can add that to the watching list too!

darkmoor · 10/10/2025 10:45

Yes nice to have a month of healing and cosiness with the leaves falling. All Creatures Great and Small sounds lovely, think I’ll find a film or two to stream to mark the weekend.

HotTiredDog · 10/10/2025 11:30

All Creatures is perfect comfort viewing for autumn, how nice that we will be watching it almost-together 😻
Confession time… I’m that old, too!

(Still giggling at your “candid nuts” TrodIn, I want to know what they say to you - “come on girl, it’s about time we had a serious chat.” Grin)

Hope your clinic goes well,Nearly.
Oh, and what do you think of Blue Lights? We’ve not started s3 yet.

(And fyi I’m nearly 60. Been drinking more days than not for over 40 years, give or take a child or two - that’s a pretty scary statistic.)

HotTiredDog · 10/10/2025 11:35

What will you be streaming, DarkMoor? Please send inspiration as I never really watch films for some reason. Hope you’re enjoying your day, too.
Best wishes to the lurkers, keep strong and remember you’re achieving this for yourself and - as PP have said - to allow our bodies to heal 🥰

Me and those nuts had a heart to heart but it was good - it cleared the air! 😆

I know what you mean… I’m early 50s but started drinking as a teenager and apart from my 30s where I drank surprising little due to the kids, it’s been pretty consistent throughout. I think I’ve kidded myself that because I very rarely exceed 14 units a week it’s been ok, but condensing it all to the weekend can’t have done me much good.. But, I’m trying not to look back but think of the positives going forward and it’s great to share it with others.
