Anybody else doing Sober October?

Trodincatsickagain · 29/09/2025 16:54

I know there’s been a long running thread for years for dry January but I fancy having a break through October, in preparation for Xmas, give the liver a break beforehand - that is all meant very tongue in cheek 😜

Anyone fancy joining?

Wow that’s a great result, TrodIn!
Motivational, too.
Have a great day 💐

Youngatheart00 · 03/10/2025 13:24

Very vivid dreams for me last night, still feel very tired and craving sugar though.

Friday night takeaway zone to navigate tonight. What to pair with a curry, I ALWAYS have a white wine (and typically a bottle)

For those of you that are struggling with your sleep, hang on in there, it gets better. Day 10 for me and I had the best night last night, slept all the way through and feel so much more refreshed and clear headed for it.

I really hope that happens to me! My sleep was so bad last night. I hate it. I’m so tired all the time but can’t sleep. I’ve not gone more than 3 nights without alcohol in a long time though.

HotTiredDog · 03/10/2025 13:48

Youngatheart - you used to have a bottle. You don’t need that now!

is anyone also watching the thread from the MNer who lost her brother recently, to alcoholism? It’s so tragic, so awful, and sends such a powerful message.

Trodincatsickagain · 03/10/2025 13:49

@Youngatheart00 I think the vivid dreams are all par of the course when quitting as is sweating at night too but fantastic that you got through the evening.

I don’t think there’s anything that’s going to hit the spot quite like a chilled glass of white 😄, I’m not really into substitutes wines but I do like the fever tree tonics if I fancy a treat, large glass, lots of ice and just feels that little bit of a treat.

Texanchilli - do you know what the reason(s) are for your poor sleep? Stress, menopause - sorry, I don’t know your age. Heavier drinkers are often short of B vitamins so it’s worth supplementing with those, and magnesium as a deficiency in that can worsen insomnia. I hope you get a better night tonight 💐

That is amazing! What an achievement and I hope that it spurs you on to keep going. Hang on in there regarding the sleep, I know it’s really tough at the moment but it really does get better and just think of all those health benefits already from having these days off - onwards and upwards Gang!

I read that yesterday morning and it stayed with me all day… I felt traumatised just reading it, so my heart goes out to anyone that’s had to watch a loved one go through it. Amazing how we kid ourselves to the true damage that alcohol can do and what a poison it really is.

Well done everyone so far. I'm thinking about getting some posh soft drinks like a san pelligrino or make a mocktail with ginger ale + slice of lemon. Time to get creative!

Trodincatsickagain · 03/10/2025 18:24

That sounds delicious @MissyElif - ginger ale is my favourite substitute, gives a nice warm hit and feels a bit more grown up than coke etc.

If you’re at home or out tonight, stay strong and think of how much better you’re going to feel waking with a fresh head and not that horrible dehydrated, queasy, anxious hangover feeling! You’ll be so much more productive this weekend too 💪

HotTiredDog · 03/10/2025 18:35

Thanks TrodIn, I certainly need your words to keep me from grabbing a drink - it may be a relaxing Friday but it feels like my DH is stretching my patience as far as he can this evening! Aargh!!
Think there’s a bottle of ginger ale in the utility room, I’ll dig it out & pop a bit of ice in.
If I can do tonight I can do anything!

C’mon!!

Nearlyadoctor · 03/10/2025 18:45

Just got in from work and would love a glass of red wine 🍷. Going to cook some pasta, pour a glass of sparkling water and think about how chuffed I’ll be in the morning .
Steroid injection wasn’t needed again so had my flu jab whilst at work, so if I don’t sleep or get the hot cot feeling I get after drinking I’ll know it’s that instead .
Stay strong tonight everyone and we’ll rendezvous as they say in the morning bright and breezy ( I think it’s going to be a breezy night anyway 😂)

Trodincatsickagain · 03/10/2025 19:07

You’ve got this @HotTiredDog! You’ve already done so well - just take a deep breath and try and switch off from the OH 😄, let him get on with it and concentrate on how good you’re going to feel to get another night nailed!

Have a good evening @Nearlyadoctor and hope that the vaccine doesn’t cause too much bother - I have the paracetamols at the ready!

Nearlyadoctor · 03/10/2025 19:31

@Trodincatsickagain - I shall be taking 2 before I go to bed tonight and suggest you do to 😍

HotTiredDog · 03/10/2025 21:18

That’s good news, Nearly - does it mean your shoulder is healing spontaneously / not worsening?

Its definitely going to be a breezy night, not least cos tea was M&S curry for DH & DSS, with home made multi-bean bhuna & the remains of yesterday’s garlic roast cauliflower 🙀😆 (thankfully they’re out together tomorrow!)
I’ve taken your advice & left them in one room whilst I read in a peace in the lounge.
Totally right about how good we’re going to feel tomorrow and onwards. It’s only as I’m - slowly - leaving behind the constant consumption of alcohol that I’m starting to comprehend personal the impact of it. I’m sure there’s a few kilos on my otherwise gorgeous body that can be attributed to the empty calories of booze.

darkmoor · 03/10/2025 21:22

@HotTiredDog thanks for alerting to that thread. It is so sad and so harrowing. And such a powerful message, as you say.

Trodincatsickagain · 04/10/2025 07:28

Morning All! How did everybody do last night? I definitely felt like something was missing and there was a sense of boredom that even knitting didn’t fill! I ended up going to bed early to read and listen to the wind threaten to blow the trees down outside! Yet when I really look at it, what exactly is it that I’m missing? Getting slightly tipsy for a few hours to then go to bed and wake up the next day feeling dehydrated and crap… are those few hours of drinking really worth the negative effects it has on my body and mental health?

Perhaps slightly heavy for a Saturday morning but whether you made it through last night, or had a slip up or are just quietly reading along, just keep showing up and we’ll get sober October nailed!

Morning everyone, actually slept pretty although woke a few times listening to the storm.
Just about to have a cuppa in bed and then DS is coming over to help DH get our old sofa out of the lounge ready for delivery of a new one tomorrow.
Hope everyone had a good evening, tough though it may have been. At least I haven’t woken up with the awful anxiety feeling that drinking gives me so very thankful.
Onwards for Day 4 , hope everyone has a good day despite the weather 😊

Youngatheart00 · 04/10/2025 08:32

Anyone else woken up STARVING today? It’s making me realise just how many empty carbs/calories/sugar was in all the wine I was drinking.

Trodincatsickagain · 04/10/2025 08:32

Priceless isn’t it? 😊

Sounds like a busy day but we’ll worth it for a new sofa!

Good morning from day 4!
Definitely an improvement in my sleep too, not least of which was only one wee rather than a couple or more!
Today is going to be rubbish weather-wise but that’s not going to distract us from our goals. Hope everyone has a good day, whether you’re inside or out doors 💪

Same here - my appetite has definitely increased since I’ve not been drinking and I actually wake up hungry.

Excellent news @HotTiredDog - makes it worthwhile

Trodincatsickagain · 04/10/2025 09:44

How are you feeling after your flu jab @Nearlyadoctor? I thought I’d got away with it but I’m definitely feeling a bit shivery and achy now, although it’s the Covid arm that’s sore.

I’ll be taking it easy this morning, but if the rain lays off I will go for a lovely, blowy, autumnal walk later.
