Anybody else doing Sober October?

Trodincatsickagain · 29/09/2025 16:54

I know there’s been a long running thread for years for dry January but I fancy having a break through October, in preparation for Xmas, give the liver a break beforehand - that is all meant very tongue in cheek 😜

Anyone fancy joining?

I did sober october last year.... carried on and just celebrated a year!

The change physically and mentally was just such an improvement that I wanted to carry on.

You’re amazing!
Well done & thank you for sharing your success 💐

Thanks for the tips @Nearlyadoctor much appreciated - though I rather like any advice that tells me to eat toast Grin Interesting tip about taking PPIs at night.
You must have been poorly to have ended up in hospital, how horrid.
(Think I’d rather give up alcohol than tea though Wink)
Glad that you got out in the sunshine with DDog, that’s a real bit of self-care.

How are you this evening, TrodIn?

darkmoor · 16/10/2025 22:30

Yey @UnicornMamma please tell us more about the improvements, love a bit of inspiration!

UnicornMamma · 16/10/2025 22:35

Before starting the gym cutting alcohol dripped nearly a stone off of me.

My skin is nowhere near as dry and flakey and also now more even in tone (not changed any products)

About 3 weeks in my sleep had improved. I wasn't waking up dying the night anywhere near as much which has meant ive got more energy overall.

Ive also found i crave junk food less. Sweet tooth has pretty much vanished.

I dont feel like I miss out. Everywhere these days has non alcoholic options. It's no longer the orange juice squad.

One major thing though is going out is better. You remember the whole night, memories made. No more tipsy silly moments. Plus you can always drive yourself home

Day 17 - Over half way there!!!

Good morning Peeps - Can you believe we’ve made it this far? Hope you all had a good night and are ready and prepared for the weekend.

So 17 days in and there are some pretty good health benefits to be had!

By now blood pressure should likely be lowering - I know that this is the case for me, my morning BP is now lower and my readings are more consistent. Cardio vascular health is also improving with the rhythm of the heart beginning to stabilise.

I know a few of you are still struggling with your sleep but hang on in there because although it might not feel like it, you will now be getting more REM sleep, which is the deepest part of the sleep cycle and the bit that has the most restorative impact on your body and brain.

And of course the liver is definitely thanking us for giving it a break. By now it has started the healing process and liver fat and inflammation has started to reduce, leaving it to concentrate on those essential metabolic functions.

These are just a few of the benefits but hopefully these will help to keep us all motivated through to the end of the month and maybe beyond for some of us. So keep on keeping on Gang as we head towards another weekend! 💪

How are you this evening, TrodIn?

Gastritis is horrid! I use to suffer a lot with it in my late 20s and like you I would guzzle Gaviscon trying to get some relief.

Everything would set it off, even down to getting slightly hungry and that pain would start and I would just want to eat carbs to try and stop that constant gnawing. I think it just takes a long time for that inflammation to calm down but I really feel for you. Good advice though from Nearlyadoctor and I hope that you get some relief soon.

@Thursa I hope that you managed to find something to do to alleviate the anxiety slightly? How are you feeling this morning? If you had a wobble and fell off the wagon no worries. Just jump back on board when you feel ready, we’re all here to support you!

Thank you for checking on me!

Deep cleaned two bedrooms yesterday, today I’m taking everything off the bookshelves and cleaning those down. I was definitely tempted last night but the wine remains closed!

HotTiredDog · 17/10/2025 19:54

Lovely bit of blackcurrant squash in my glass tonight which I’m enjoying in front of a bit of classic telly; how are your evenings going?

Nearlyadoctor · 17/10/2025 20:03

@Thursa - well done , that’s an amazing achievement.

Sat in front of tv with a sparkling water catching up on last nights All Creatures G&S.
It’s been an incredibly busy stressful week so I’m thankful it’s over. Next week should be far easier, as I have a day off Tuesday and Friday 🥰
I hope everyone else is having a nice evening and has a restful weekend planned 😊

Evening! Had a busy afternoon and early evening and now sitting here watching some dodgy Halloween horror whilst sipping ginger ale. Have had no pangs for wine tonight and as always looking forward to waking clear headed tomorrow.

That’s exactly what I’ve just watched, Nearly! Flippin smashing classic drama.

darkmoor · 18/10/2025 07:53

Was out last night and despite an initial craving, it’s the weekend etc, had previously allocated it as a cheat day, I did not drink. Woo hoo!

Oh well done! Such a good feeling isn’t it? I swerved a glass of wine too offered yesterday and actually didn’t feel like I was missing out.

Day 18 - Just in case you’ve forgotten!

Good morning All - how we doing? Sounds like Friday night was a success for some. If not, pick yourself up and try, try, try again! 😊 We’re all in this together.

My mindset is definitely changing having had a few stints at AF this year. I’m not so sure that I want to go back to drinking when this challenge is up, I’m liking the positives and how my body feels too much to want to give that up, so will try and keep going beyond.

Hope that you’ve all got a good weekend planned, with plenty of r&r thrown in and keep on keeping on people! 💪

I’m sitting here with my ☕️ watching Jamie Oliver Desserts - so far he’s made the most decadent Brownies and now on to sticky toffee pudding. It’s making me think of you @HotTiredDog 😄

Hi TrodIn - I do appreciate being associated with a super-rich sweet treat! There’s still one in the freezer, if you fancy calling in for a slice? Or maybe I should save it for our month-end party? It’s AF so we can have it on the 31st - or I could make a rum custard if we’re waiting until All Saints Day!

I didn’t mean to do a load of tidying this morning, it just happened - perhaps it’s another symptom of being AF, especially as so many others on this thread are doing the same!

I’m home alone this evening (DFamily are all elsewhere & I’m hoping DPs don’t need me 🤞) & am looking forward to just relaxing with a glass of squash & a cat on my lap. My mind is turning towards Christmas cake(s), maybe I’ll get some made in the next week or so.

Incidentally, I know what you mean about not really wanting to go back to drinking after this month; we’ll see how it goes but it may end up as a Going Out thing only (& I very rarely leave the house!)

Hope as many of you as possible can get out in a dry Autumnal day today xx

Nearlyadoctor · 18/10/2025 17:12

Day 17/18 and feeling pretty good - went out for breakfast with DH , then took ddog for a walk at a NT property. DH only gets every other weekend off so try to do something and the forecast for tomorrow here is rotten, although must get some paint for dd’s bedroom.

We’ve done jobs this afternoon and then about half an hour ago he suggested a nice bottle of red with the steak we’re having for tea. He said dd’s very well settled at uni now ( that’s been my excuse in case we needed to do a 3 hr dash to get her). She’s been there 3 weeks and we’re not getting a second thought so highly unlikely. So I finally fessed up 😂😂🤩. He’s now gone out to buy himself a beer and some Nozeco for me.

Hope everyone else has had a good day- weekend evening’s are definitely the hardest .

@HotTiredDog - very impressed you make your own Christmas cake, can I put an order in 😁

Nearlyadoctor · 18/10/2025 17:22

He’s bought a big bar of fruit n nut as well. Happy days 😂

Trodincatsickagain · 18/10/2025 18:59

Evening All!

@HotTiredDog Sounds like a pretty productive morning! I think you’re right, it’s obviously a side effect of Sober October all this tidying, I found myself cleaning out my kitchen cupboards earlier and removing a layer of grease - Thats it for the next year now!

I hope that you have a restful evening and nothing untoward happens. I’ve also got a cat on my lap and the heated blanket on. I’m slowly getting hotter and hotter and need to get up for some water but find myself not wanting to disturb the bloody cat 😄 what is that about?!

@Nearlyadoctor So I finally fessed up 😂😂🤩. He’s now gone out to buy himself a beer and some Nozeco for me. I was wondering how long you could this quiet! 😄 what did he say - Was he impressed?

Sounds like a lovely day - enjoy your tea and especially the fruit & nut bar - another one of my favourites! .

@Trodincatsickagain - I think sort of impressed difficult to say , but that’s men for you. I think because he knew I was a bit anxious re Dd he just assumed the first week or so it was that. By today though he was getting suspicious as generally I’ll choose to drink when he won’t 😆😆
