Taking paracetamol doesn’t give you autistic babies but voting for Trump definitely gives you a festering carcass of American rot shoved into an ill-fitting suit: the sleaze of a conman, the cowardice of a draft dodger, the gluttony of a parasite, the racism of a Klansman, the sexism of a back-alley creep, the ignorance of a bar-stool drunk, and the greed of a hedge-fund ghoul— all spray-painted orange and paraded like a prize hog at a county fair.

Oh man the Pope has upset the MAGA Catholics again and my Twitter feed is full of whining. It’s not like the church’s teaching on the death penalty and not abusing migrants is a surprise.

They are going to be mad when they find out its stance on climate change.

SerendipityJane · 02/10/2025 09:12

MAGA Catholics

Now there is an oxymoron.

RafaistheKingofClay · 02/10/2025 09:17

Well yes. But it adequately describes them. And they are very upset that he’s just pointed out that if you are against abortion but pro the death penalty and abusing migrants you might not actually be pro-life.

And now he seems to have blessed a block of ice at a climate change conference or something so they are even angrier than they were before.

Is excommunication still a thing ?

RafaistheKingofClay · 02/10/2025 10:41

Probably. They definitely want to excommunicate Pope Leo. It’s hilarious.

My thoughts are with the relatives and friends of the victims of the terrorist attack in Manchester this morning, and to the emergency and armed services who are in attendance.

What a mess the world is. 😔

When I had my DC (mid 1990s) I thought that they would live in an open, accepting and increasingly equal world . How niave was I...?

Life in the UK has only been peaceful and prosperous if you are in the "right" demographic. People who are often smile patronisingly as they tell those that aren't how lucky they are.

Now maybe that ratio of in:out differs for the UK that for many countries. However it's not fixed and the smallest changes in it can have dramatic effects.

None of which ever excuses violence in any way shape or form.

Funnily, my kids are little younger, but I was having that same thought this morning. I watched this last night and kept thinking about how the world then felt progressive, as in progressing human rights and a growing acceptance of differences in how others live their lives. And now, how far backwards we've gone and how hard it is to have a conversation about it all.

I despair at how much hatred there is in the World. WTF is wrong with people?? Whatever you think of events and actions in the Middle East people in the UK should be able to worship and go about their lives without the fear of physical violence. Could honestly weep.

Agree completely.

And surely we should be able to separate individuals of a religion or nationality from the actions of their governments? I know many Jews who don't support the actions of Netanyahu, just like I know people from Palestine who don't support Hamas. God help us Americans if the rest of the world thinks that automatically makes us Trump supporters.

And on a practical level, moral reprehensibility aside, violence always backfires.

I am interested by a rather down-to-earth response to some of Hegseth's blethering:

I was very confused by this being sudden news... until it dawned on me the date on that post is US-style (10/2/25).

It made so much sense the other way...
