This really is a scary time for free speech.

Another example right wing hypocrisy when it comes to free speech:

Jimmy Kimmel Live! suspended indefinitely after host’s Charlie Kirk comments https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2025/sep/18/jimmy-kimmel-live-suspended-indefinitely-after-hosts-charlie-kirk-comments?CMP=share_btn_url

ABC says late-night show will not air for foreseeable future after Kimmel accused Republicans of ‘doing everything they can to score political points’ from Kirk’s killing

Gosh. When those who knew about the reality of sex and raised safeguarding concerns about men in women's spaces and lost jobs, publishers, housing, doctors, spouses, even families they called it 'Consequence culture'. It's been going on for at least a decade.

But the moment it switches, and a man celebrates the murder of another, and loses a gig. that's when people accept 'cancel culture' exists?

Who could have predicted this?

WolfingtonBear · 18/09/2025 05:53

As I was righteously told right here on this very site when I posted concerns about cancel culture several years ago “there is free speech but there is no such thing as freedom from the consequences of free speech…”

Did the left honestly think CC would only be their extremely effective and vicious weapon to wield for ever? Seems so.

RingoJuice · 18/09/2025 05:53

Women were fired simply for saying that men could never be women. So excuse me if I cease to give a shit about the whining over this.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 18/09/2025 05:57

Yeah, that’s karma sorry. The left have been cancelling people for years. And where is was for stating biological fact, it’s unforgivable.

WorldMap24 · 18/09/2025 06:24

I think it's appalling he's been cancelled. If the article is correct and showing the full extent of his remarks I don't see any 'celebrating' of a man's murder as he is blamed of in this thread.
He fact checks a comment from JD Vance that statistically the left have more crazies and cites a study to support his point.
He says that the right have taken the opportunity to score political points, absolutely, why did jd dance have to make it political at all? Why mention left vs right at all? Vance isn't the only one, same for Nancy Mace who went public '100%' blaming the democrats and calling for the death penalty, then when the culprit was found out to be right leaning there was no call for the same, only tweets about praying for him. Why mention parties at all if not scoring political points? I can only liken it to getting mad and calling for hatred of a racial attack when finding out that both the victim and the culprit are of the same race!
It may not be nice for the right to hear their heroes are manipulating the death of a man they looked up to, but kimmels words were to my mind fact checking. It's just another nail in Americas freedom coffin as they walk blindly into a dictatorship.
Just for clarification as I know someone would want to jump down my throat, no I'm not pleased he's dead. Yes he was killed in an abhorrent manner.

Neemie · 18/09/2025 06:32

The middle class left created a monster and now it has come back to bite them. They didn’t think it might mean they would have to ‘be kind’ or silent about obnoxious right wingers as well.

ThreeFeetTall · 18/09/2025 06:38

I don’t know why they are not embarrassed to have campaigned on a ‘free speech’ ticket and now be doing this.
sure, some people on the left seem to love cancelling people but why does the right wing copy them?

Wow you still believe that the shooter was a right-winger? You need to get out of that leftist bubble tbh

Because the right are just as hypocritical and self serving as the left.

LizzyEm · 18/09/2025 06:41

Seems like some don't like the taste of their own medicine.

What a shame.

I believe it is akin to rubbing their noses in the shitshow THEY created. We are simply holding them to their own standards

TheaBrandt1 · 18/09/2025 06:45

It’s darkly funny seeing the hard lefts cancel culture that they created (so getting women sacked from their jobs for wrongthink as they did on the trans issue) being turned right back on them.

ThreeFeetTall · 18/09/2025 06:48

@RingoJuice but don’t the right have their own standards?

StrictlySequinsandStiIettos · 18/09/2025 06:54

So four late night hosts, who dare to criticise the current administration, Colbert, Kimmel - with Fallon and Meyers also in the firing line by the looks of things - are being removed from the schedule and people think this is okay?
A president is pressurising TV stations to remove any detractors and you don't see this as problematic?
Good luck with that. You're going to need it.

CrocsNotDocs · 18/09/2025 06:54

I hate cancel culture. I hate that conservatives and left wing gender critical feminists have been doxxed, canceled, no platformed and fired for years, all while being told that cancel culture doesn’t exist or if it does, they deserve it.

I don’t support cancel culture when it goes the other way either. Free speech is for people I don’t like too. However, I’m human and it does give me a tiny warm glow in my tummy to see the left screeching as they are hoisted by their own petard.

Neemie · 18/09/2025 06:55

It is difficult to respect people who throw out their ideology the minute they are faced with a tiny bit of temptation. They are all the same.

But isn’t it the hypocrisy on show which is the issue? ‘Free speech’ is currently front and centre of both MAGA and UK based right wing political movements. There is no integrity in strongly promoting free speech absolutism and then just acting in the opposite way. If you want absolute free speech you should stick to your principles.

Hiphopopotamonster · 18/09/2025 07:01

Mumsnet has become an absolute cesspit of people so obsessed with an anti trans rhetoric that it has to be out at the forefront of every political thread.

You’ll have people soon dying in abject poverty, their rights to abortion care stripped, no maternity rights or workers rights, while everything around them goes up in flames and they’ll still be sat there saying ‘ah but at least I know what a woman is’.

RingoJuice · 18/09/2025 07:03

Neemie · 18/09/2025 06:55

It was difficult to stand by and watch ‘conservatives’ toothlessly bleat about cancel
culture for years, accomplishing nothing, while the rest of us had to stay silent at the workplace.

Applying our standards to people who fundamentally don’t believe in them? It’s never worked. We may as well go with theirs until they realize why free and robust speech protections matter.

The left has not shown any commitment to free speech.

I remember hearing that the ACLU used to defend the free speech rights of KKK members. Now they bring lawsuits against teachers who won’t use preferred pronouns.

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 18/09/2025 07:11

He didn’t celebrate the murder at all, quite the opposite.

He actually sent his sympathy to the family straight away after the event.

Later, on a separate occasion, he mocked trump”s bizarre reaction after he was asked by a reporter (sympathetic because those trump doesn’t like are banned from the whitehouse) how he was bearing up after the death of a friend.
Trump replied that he was good and in the same sentence went on to talk about the ballroom he is having built.

That is unfeeling and weird behaviour so it deserves mocking.

DoingAway · 18/09/2025 07:11

Also there are left wing people who are free speech absoluteists. It’s not necessary a bipartisan thing. I hate all the ‘thes’ around in discourse. ‘The’ left, ‘the’ right, ‘the’ working class, ‘the’ British public all makes it sound as if these are homogeneous groups with one view.

WolfingtonBear · 18/09/2025 07:12

ThreeFeetTall · 18/09/2025 06:48

@RingoJuice but don’t the right have their own standards?

Some say we are in a culture war. Were the right supposed to allow only their opponents such an effective weapon? Imagine a conflict where your preferred side said “oh no, that hand grenade is far too effective & hurting too many of us, we don’t agree with such viciousness, we will just leave you to it” wouldn’t happen. Seems like the left just don’t like it when their chosen, finely honed weapon is appropriated by the other side. Height of hypocrisy to assert that the other side should have higher standards than your own hold. Do you even hear yourselves? If ever this site still needed the “laugh” emoji 😁

Where was the “respect” this past decade when CC was working so well for your side?

Free speech is fine, but that doesn't mean that calling for further people to be killed shouldn't come with consequences.

Also, the videos I'm seeing of people destroying memorials are disgusting, that behaviour needs consequences too. There's a video going round of some spoilt brat tearing up a memorial sign and kicking the flowers/tributes. That's not on.
