Right wing cancel culture at it again.

This really is a scary time for free speech.

Another example right wing hypocrisy when it comes to free speech:

Jimmy Kimmel Live! suspended indefinitely after host’s Charlie Kirk comments https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2025/sep/18/jimmy-kimmel-live-suspended-indefinitely-after-hosts-charlie-kirk-comments?CMP=share_btn_url

Jimmy Kimmel Live! suspended indefinitely after host’s Charlie Kirk comments

ABC says late-night show will not air for foreseeable future after Kimmel accused Republicans of ‘doing everything they can to score political points’ from Kirk’s killing

I dont believe that Kimmel said anything to get his show cancelled. But its ironic that he was accusing the right of point scoring when thats exactly what he was doing.

" "The Maga Gang desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it."
The late-night host also criticised flags being flown at half mast in honour of Kirk, and mocked US President Donald Trump's reaction to the shooting.
"This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he calls a friend. This is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish," said Kimmel, who has often poked fun at Trump."

CKs death and the aftermath just shows how screwed America is and us here in the UK to a lesser degree. There has been a rise in extremism on both sides. So many seem completely detached from reality, almost like they are watching sport. A man was murdered in front of his family.

So many have shown their true colours. Celebrating a murder and then the accused man's families political beliefs. There were loads of disgusting comments on here. Threads were taken down. And yet so many on the left are so smug in their beliefs that they are kinder, better educated and different to those on the right.

BackToLurk · 18/09/2025 08:59

The problems GC women faced were a resurgence of a problem that went back further. At least to the Satanic Verses with some supposed advocates of free speech suggesting Rushdie went too far. It was seen through the Danish cartoons and Charlie Hebdo controversies. The whole “it’s not freedom from consequences” narrative. It largely seems to stem from authoritarian voices on the left who seem unable to comprehend that it’s not just people they disagree with that will face consequences.

This thread is in Chat, not politics, but it’s a bit of an overstatement to claim that all of MN is a cesspit of women concerned about women’s rights when anything trans related tends to be relegated to a single space on FWR vs the literally hundreds and hundreds (thousands) of threads on every other possible topic under the sun.

If you take the time to read the FWR threads you’ll also find that most posters there care deeply about abortion rights and maternity care and workers rights. In fact, oddly enough, anything that has to do with supporting women and children. On a forum called mumsnet.

But the trans issue is shoved into every thread. In every topic. Sometimes it has to be shoehorned in. But it still gets in there. It is endemic. And anyone who says that is accused of being either a man or an anti-feminist. I see it every day. Every single day. And tbh It is doing the people doing it no favours.

I know it’s an important issue. I have strong views on it too. But it’s not the only issue. Every single time.

Justanotherlurker · 18/09/2025 09:01

My schadenfreude is currently in an epic battle with my hate of cancel culture but, as I have been told on here many times over the past 10 years, freedom of speech doesn't not equal freedom from consequence, and it's a private company and they can do what they want.

EasternStandard · 18/09/2025 09:03

AnyoneWhoHasAHeart · 18/09/2025 08:27

Yep totally.

And the amount of sympathy for Charlie Kirk clearly shows posters up as what they are.

People who don’t want violence or assassination of someone like CK? You can’t mean you want the opposite

soupycustard · 18/09/2025 09:03

The bbc report suggested that Kimmell was in fact mocking Trump's reaction, so it wasnt so much about Kirk as it was about Trump. If so, this is even more concerning for free speech.

Shedmistress · 18/09/2025 09:04

AnyoneWhoHasAHeart · 18/09/2025 08:27

People who think that other people have rights to say what they want?

Namitynamename · 18/09/2025 09:04

Did Kimmel actually call for people on the right to be cancelled? Or is it just because he is outspoken lefty and therefore tarred by association. Because all I can find is articles like this https://www.mic.com/culture/jimmy-kimmel-tucker-carlson-joe-rogan-trump. But I don't watch Kimmel regularly and don't have time for more than a cursory Google..so maybe he did.

Jimmy Kimmel doesn’t think Tucker Carlson, Joe Rogan, or Donald Trump should be cancelled

The late-night host doesn’t think we should cancel problematic people, but rather challenge them.

What’s the issue? The site isn’t all in line with your thinking?

So strange how FWR is labelled right wing. It’s a measure of how successful the no debate movement was in smearing any concerns as only coming from the right. Plus the use of gender ideology as one strand of ‘reasonable’ discourse by the US political right conveniently serving as a sleight of hand coverup for their anti-women policies. Resulting in an apparent weird forced teaming of gender critical women with conservatives despite many (most) GC women being historically centre/left of centre politically.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 18/09/2025 09:09

If you're not ok with cancel culture when it's directed at an issue which is seen as a right wing interest, but ok with cancel culture when it's directed at an issue which is seen as a left wing interest, then you're not really anti cancel culture, are you?

Sachertorten · 18/09/2025 09:12

It does surprise me that just because CK was shot he must be venerated as a saint. Who else gets that treatment? Did he not say that schools killings are an acceptable loss for the privilege the Second Amendment? Live by the sword, die by the sword, or in this case, the bullet.

However it doesn’t surprise me that it’s an authoritarian administration. It never pretended to be anything else. Trump wishes he had the overruling power of Putin. There’s soon going to be a US state media. Bye bye to their First Amendment from the people who love the Second Amendment. The irony is the Confederate Flag flyers use ‘Commie’ and ‘Communist’ as an insult but they want that in a leader.

If you go that far back, it's the same on both sides. Tippi Gores campaign. Or Frank Zappa's kind of weird debate here (they keep asking what about incest for some reason).
And it was American Christians burning JK Rowling's book.

Yes, it is an age old problem. But particularly in the US the left and right almost changed sides on this. Viewing it as "censorious lefties" versus "free speech right wingers" is quite a limited take.

Every thread currently trending apart from this one does not mention trans. And here it does seem relevant to some posters. There are 26 Talk Topics with dozens and dozens of threads in each. Most of them never mention trans.

Topics on weight loss, books, tv shows, the Archers, recipes, money, gardening, in’laws, Christmas, fashion, elderly parents, children worries and many many threads on dickheads husbands or partners with red flags etc etc. I’m on quite a few of these. None talk about anything trans related though. So I don’t see what you see.

ColdSalads · 18/09/2025 09:14

Right wing cancel culture at it again

Isn't it glorious?

Some people decided to burn down cities and attack people, the right can't do that, we've got jobs to go to, so we do it from the comfort of our home.

LeftieRightsHoarder · 18/09/2025 09:14

Hiphopopotamonster · 18/09/2025 07:01

Mumsnet has become an absolute cesspit of people so obsessed with an anti trans rhetoric that it has to be out at the forefront of every political thread.

You’ll have people soon dying in abject poverty, their rights to abortion care stripped, no maternity rights or workers rights, while everything around them goes up in flames and they’ll still be sat there saying ‘ah but at least I know what a woman is’.

Letting men (TWANW) into women’s changing rooms etc puts all women and children at risk. An entirely unnecessary new risk, for no valid reason.

This is on top of the other concerns you mention, not instead.

I think it's appalling he's been cancelled. If the article is correct and showing the full extent of his remarks I don't see any 'celebrating' of a man's murder as he is blamed of in this thread.
He fact checks a comment from JD Vance that statistically the left have more crazies and cites a study to support his point.
He says that the right have taken the opportunity to score political points, absolutely, why did jd dance have to make it political at all? Why mention left vs right at all? Vance isn't the only one, same for Nancy Mace who went public '100%' blaming the democrats and calling for the death penalty, then when the culprit was found out to be right leaning there was no call for the same, only tweets about praying for him. Why mention parties at all if not scoring political points? I can only liken it to getting mad and calling for hatred of a racial attack when finding out that both the victim and the culprit are of the same race!
It may not be nice for the right to hear their heroes are manipulating the death of a man they looked up to, but kimmels words were to my mind fact checking. It's just another nail in Americas freedom coffin as they walk blindly into a dictatorship.
Just for clarification as I know someone would want to jump down my throat, no I'm not pleased he's dead. Yes he was killed in an abhorrent manner.

I'm with you. Jimmy is witty, intelligent and fair. The Trump administration, far from championing free speech (as Musk and JD come to lecture us in Europe about every so often) are clamping down on it. They are trying to make the Handmaid's Tale a reality.

Agree! I don’t see anything offensive or disrespectful about the words used. Can anyone quote the exact phrase that has caused so much offence?

The president getting a talk show host fired because he didn't like being made fun of us a pretty chilling stare of affairs in a democracy.

That's the behaviour of tin pot dictators, not democratically elected heads of state.

Why were the flags flown at half mast? What did Kirk do to merit that? They should then be flown at half mast for all shootings.

Long after I am dead the world will look back on this period in disbelief. They will say that we didn’t know any better. We do. I used to respect America’s democracy. I can’t believe what I am witnessing. I hope some of my friends can get out of there. The UK may go the same way if Farage gains power. Musk and Trump want to ensure that this happens so that they can annexe the UK.

I don’t really like Bond films because their cartoonish depiction of a despotic madman out to rule the world always seemed far fetched to me. Now they seem like documentaries.

Well, it IS relevant to know whether to put yourself at risk by using their mixed sex changing rooms, when discussing M&S. It is only being 'taken over' when it is relevant.
