Things from the 90s/00s you don’t see anymore?

What are some things you remember from the 90s or early 2000s that don’t exist anymore?

I remember old ladies used to wear headscarves or those plastic rain bonnets

Lucky heather sellers in town centres

In my gran’s rural village she used to get a mobile library van and also a man selling soft drinks in glass bottles

Any more?

Of course a lot of these things existed before that era too, I just don’t remember seeing them anymore after the early 2000s.

Libraries with a music and video/DVD section. I used to love borrowing CDs from the library and recording them onto tapes!

Everyone on the tube reading the same book! White Teeth, Brick Lane, Harry Potter...

Geordie Jeans shops. And Tammy Girl.

Riva bars. Spiras. Proper Milky Ways.

Geordie Jeans!

And that horrific talking tree in the Early Learning Centre

I loved buying stickers!! Those amazing long rolls, and you'd tear off a square with 4 or 5 little stickers on. Some were foil and some were furry!

Slightly pre nineties but my first shopping trips on my own was me and my bestie getting the bus to the next town and going to the sticker shop in the precinct where the lady who owned it would glare at us as if we were shoplifters 😂

Happy days!

Bliss and Sugar Magazines and Just 17 I think it was 🤔

I still have a lot of copies of Sugar, Bliss and J17 because I'm stuck in the 90s. Funnily enough I posted this picture on a different thread earlier. Don't think I've seen "totty" mentioned since around 2001 😄

Threshers!

Virgin Megastore where you could listen to the new releases on headphones.

Walkmans/Discmans.

Miss Selfridge & Topshop, my two fave places to buy ‘going out’ clothes.

I honestly would love to go back, just for one day.

Employment agencies for office staff.

Funny little red rabbit boxes by curbs. I used to see them all the time and never bothered to find out what they were, now I wish I had.

Sinclair C5.

90s- things with fun fur on, like as a trim. Blow up armchairs
Very expensive contact lenses you massively panic if you lose and pat the floor for an hour
Sponge bags

00s - Hairslides - and short choppy hair on women, which apparently doesn't seem to be allowed now. 12 year old DN watched Gavin and Stacey with me the other day and said "But why did she have her hair like that, did something happen to her?"

Bloody Simon Cowell is definitely a big part of the rot.
Nasty, greedy, shallow bully whose only real love is himself.

And Botox. He probably keeps the industry afloat.

ljHCBCKS · 16/09/2025 20:27

Lack of offence taken. Everyone is offended by everything these days. it's beyond tedious.

High heels. Anyone else remember running for the bus/tube in stilettos without any worry about breaking an ankle?!

Toys in cereal boxes. Why the hell did that stop 😒 yeah yeah, encouraging junk food…. Well my kids eat cereal anyway and I’d love for them to experience the toy in box!! We also got CD ROMs with really good video games on, and sent away for some Disney cereal bowls from vouchers from cereal boxes. So much more fun than nowadays!

Not just encouraging landfill. Creating yet more disposable plastic crap to go in landfill!

Madhouse
Athena
C&A
That Chinese rib burger at McDonalds and those brown high chairs with the Ronald/Hamburgler scene on the padded pillow of the back
Big street lights
Price stickers from sticker guns
Those Frankenstein mousses with legs on the pots
Whistle pops in Chemists

CameForAVacationStayedForTheRevolution · 16/09/2025 20:29

Sand art pictures. Whole shops were dedicated to these.

sarah Lee chocolate gateaux.
Greens cheesecake mix in a cardboard packet.

Someone at my work sometimes comes to work in one.

1p tins of beans

Tesco's were stripey label... Kwik save were the most depressing in white. Our student food cupboards were all monochrome 😁

My dad hated bath pearls with the kind of venom most people reserve for bent politicians. Mind you I can't think of a more effective way of invisibly greasing the inside of the bath and rendering it hazardous to step into 😁

Pogs
Independent shops with actual alternative (not mass produced) clothing
Second hand bookstores that stank of fags and old paper
Ziganov multicoloured cigarettes
Really good free gifts on Cosmopolitan
Doctors waiting room magazines

Hahaha I’ll never forget the night we heard this almighty scream and crash from the bathroom. I’d had a bath and gone doolally with bath pearls I’d got for Christmas. Being a selfish twat I didn’t bother cleaning it after me. Poor dad had stepped in the bath and gone down like a skittle after slipping all his length and crashing. Needless to say bath pearls were about as welcome in our house as a dose of the clap after that.

Flicking through the rack of posters in Athena...

WonderingWanda · 16/09/2025 20:32

From the 80's: The catalog lady coming round to take orders and collect money.

The clothes show. Tomorrow's world. Teen magazines like Smash Hits. Holiday brochures, the excitement of pouring over the pages and picking a hotel.
From the 90's: Vodka jelly from Uni nights out....is it still a thing? Wogan's chat show. Coca cola Yoyo's. Round the Twist (kids show). Saturday morning kids tv like Going Live.

NorthernEmma · 16/09/2025 20:34

Phone boxes on the street corners.

Also plenty of ‘hippy/goth’ shops selling joss sticks and stripey tights and dream catchers.

PeachSnail · 16/09/2025 20:36

Heather Shimmer or Blackcherry Rimmel lipstick

KelsCommemorativeSausage · 16/09/2025 20:37

Mint wispas
M&S used to do a really good roast vegetable sandwich with balsamic dressing on sundried tomato bread. 17 year old me thought it was the most sophisticated thing ever.

Oh wow! Yes!! The only decent vegetarian sarnie out there (was always a bit dry/ hard, though). Hated the courgette if it was too courgettey. I can smell it and taste it right now 🤤

Flicking through the rack of posters in Athena...

Clank clank clank.
Never bought one and they never changed them but by god I loved the noise those frames made. It was almost therapeutic.
