I'm going to push back a bit on 'the summer of racism'.
Its been a summer like most of the previous ones. Parents cobbling together childcare. Mixture of weather including a temporary panic mid July that the summer was in fact over, then general relief that it wasnt. Some people had holidays, plenty of people didnt or couldnt. Most parents have reached the end of their tether at some point. There has been some great sport and some disappointing results. Usual threads on shit husbands, sunbed hoggers and passport renewal panics. Front page photos of celebs at Wimbledon and (female) sunbathers in Green Park/Bournemouth.
There has been racism on our streets which the media has enthusiastically covered (or promoted). I'm sure there will be more.
But for the majority of the country, for good or for ill, it will have been a fairly ordinary summer.
And now I will make my annual complaint about the ruddy Conference season.
For heavens sakes get it wrapped up in 2 weeks in the summer recess. No party needs more than 2 days MAX.
Stop turning up for work only to close Parliament only to sod off a week later.
I'm not interested in the interminable backslapping, 'grandstanding' speeches and donor softening that goes on for the next month.
Do some bloody governing/opposing.
