What do your young kids call you?

DS (aged 4) settled on mamma as his name for me and I actually prefer it to mummy for some reason so have never encouraged him to change. I expect I’ll got straight from mamma to mum when he’s a bit older. But over the summer I’ve noticed lots of calls of mamma at every farm/zoo/soft play from children my son’s age and older which got me wondering if this was a genuine trend, or if I’m just tuned in to listening for it.

So what are kids calling mum where you are? Is this a regional oddity or just a case of confirmation bias on my part?

Mumma. They’re not that young though 🤣, a teen, tween and a 6 year old.

BrendaSmall · 30/08/2025 19:35

ive always been mummy and then mum!
My 5 year old granddaughter calls everyone by their Christian name 🤣 No matter what we say she still does it, has done it for around 2/3 years

I hear a lot of 'Mumma/Mamma' around here (London) but mainly from Eastern European children.

Mine called me Mummy and then eventually Mum.

puddingandsun · 30/08/2025 19:39

It was mama during toddlerhood, then mummy- I think influenced by cartoons, and interestingly since they had a South African teacher in year one who kept saying ‘your mama’ we are back to that (8yo).
But also get mum now sometimes.

DS age 10 : mumma or mummy. ‘My mum’ if referring to me.

DS age 7: ‘MAMMAAAAA 😃’ or mummy

DD age 3: as of this week, mum 😭 may be a fad! I don’t mind it too much. DH hates being ‘dad’ 😄
