What do your young kids call you?

DS (aged 4) settled on mamma as his name for me and I actually prefer it to mummy for some reason so have never encouraged him to change. I expect I’ll got straight from mamma to mum when he’s a bit older. But over the summer I’ve noticed lots of calls of mamma at every farm/zoo/soft play from children my son’s age and older which got me wondering if this was a genuine trend, or if I’m just tuned in to listening for it.

So what are kids calling mum where you are? Is this a regional oddity or just a case of confirmation bias on my part?

Mama and mummy.

Bro occasionally by my 8yo 😅

stample · 30/08/2025 20:53

Always been mummy, sometimes mum. Dd when she was 2 called me mama.

Newlysinglemumma · 30/08/2025 20:55

My boys 5 and 8 call me mumma. When they talk about me they will sometimes call me mum especially my eldest. I hate being called mum🙈 they’ve always called me mumma so it’s so weird to hear

Mummy for 6yo, mamma for 1yo and a hefty cry from the newborn does it. I think mama is really sweet. I enjoy all of them. I do not like when my 6 year old calls me by my actual name though if I haven't responded immediately 😂

LhudeSingCuccu · 30/08/2025 20:59

Mummy followed by mum. I thought it was sad when ‘mummy’ ended, but not as sad as my 26 year old colleague who still calls her mother ‘mummy’. 😂

BilbaoBaggage · 30/08/2025 21:00

Mummy until about 15.
And then by my name.

GRCP · 30/08/2025 21:01

DD calls me mumma and DS calls me mummy

madnessitellyou · 30/08/2025 21:06

NW.

Mama (i.e “Mam-maaah” in fake posh) from dd1.

Mother from dd2.

Or just plain old mum. Or “muuuuuuum” when money/lifts/help is sought.

They are teenagers.

NancyJoan · 30/08/2025 21:07

Mine are late teens and I’m still Mumma (to my face)

sadtimeshardtimes · 30/08/2025 21:12

In order from 0-18:
Mama
Mummy
Mum
Bruh
Mother
Mum

Hahahaha childhood to adulthood right there.

Ruggerlass · 30/08/2025 21:19

Mumsy now mum

Dogaredabomb · 30/08/2025 21:20

Huh, I've only just realised I get Bruh from my adult ds1, I hadn't noticed! It's sad when they move on from Mummy to Mum. I also get Mumbis, which started out as Tubbis.

VerityUnreasonble · 30/08/2025 21:46

Mama if speaking to me (in 20s and teens)
My Mum / name if speaking about me

hereismydog · 30/08/2025 21:51

I’m 31 and still call mine Mumma Grin

My DS is 8mo so he doesn’t call me anything yet, but I think I’ll be Mummy as that’s what DP refers to me as when talking to DS!

KelsCommemorativeSausage · 30/08/2025 21:53

Mummy. It was Mimi when she was very little.

YoungSoak · 30/08/2025 21:55

kittykat36 · 30/08/2025 21:58

Im probably very different to everyone in that my dc call me

dd (14) mama/mother depending on what she wants or her attitude

ds (12) fam/bro/my g

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 30/08/2025 22:01

Mama (my name, sometimes my full name 😅), so not just mama.

I don't know where he got it from because I always called myself mummy, but he is significantly speech delayed, so I'm delighted he calls me my name because heaven forbid he got lost somewhere he would be able to tell someone what my name is and what my relationship is to him. He just calls his dad daddy though.

Chipsahoy · 30/08/2025 22:14

Mummy to my older and now mum. Youngest called me mama in toddler years and still does at times. He’s 7. Otherwise is mummy.

CoodleMoodle · 30/08/2025 22:30

Mummy/Mum/Mama.

They're 7 and 11. 11yo mostly uses Mum, 7yo mostly Mummy, but they both call me Mama at times, although it sounds more like "Mumma" to me. It was Mama when they were tiny.

CoreyTaylorsbiggestfan · 30/08/2025 22:37

Mammy and Mam. We’re from the North east of England.
Mum in our accent wouldn’t sound right to us.

Ketryne · 30/08/2025 22:44

Wow lots of Mamma/mumma’s around then! I’d never really heard it in this country beyond the baby stage until my own DS stuck with it. I didn’t actually want to be a ‘mummy’ though, I felt like it came with too much baggage (all the ‘yummy mummy’ stuff).

DS calls his dad Dadda too, which is probably more unusual I imagine. It’s not like baby talk, that’s just his name, if that makes sense.

I’m laughing at all the posts about having the name yelled over and over all day because that is very much my life right now. Even if I like being Mamma, when you’ve heard it 47 times before breakfast the shine wears off a lot 😆

Trying to work out if mama / mumma is generational or regional.

I’m not really around people with young children now, but when my DC was young it was definitely ‘mommy’ then ‘mom’ for practically every family I knew (midlands).

I’m in the Midlands and I’m Mumma. Growing up I used mummy followed by mum.
