Oh God, my DH keeps saying 'the country is full'. He does this partly to aggravate me (bantz innit) but also because he reads The Times.

He's a Labour voter. He does hate Reform at least and the Tories.

The asylum seekers are threats to women and girls rhetoric has quickly become mainstream

I have several old friends who seem to have swallowed the Reform propaganda, luckily I am only in touch on Facebook these days, what I do is block all the pages they share hateful racist stuff from so I don’t see it. Bizarrely, one of them was married to an Iraqi and converted to Islam, so I am not sure why she has changed so much.

One person I have muted as everything on her feed is her own opinions about grooming gangs, I check every once in a while to see if she has come to her senses.

The Times has turned into the Telegraph

And the Telegraph into the Mail.

It is a lovely sunny day here. 🌞 Time to get outside and forget about the Reform loons on MN for a while.

That really difficult for you. You’d have thought someone who’s known you all that time would know better, wouldn’t you?

Exactly! I think this is what has upset me the most plus I’m worried about her & a lot of the stuff she has been saying & WA me is clearly lifted from some extremely dubious sources & appears to be in the thrall of Tommy/Stephen what ever his sodding name is.

pointythings · 15/08/2025 10:34

I have had to mute quite a few people lately. However, I have had some luck with my late husband 's cousin, who on the face of it would be ripe for Reform. Instead she has fully accepted that Brexit was a really stupid idea (she voted Leave) and that it's worth looking behind the headlines. She's come out with some really sensible stuff lately.

It’s increasing I think. A friend of mine just had to distance herself from an old uni friend who started banging on about boats endlessly. What’s a bit worrying is that I think these people thought like that before, just now they feel emboldened to say it out loud.

I don't think that this is true.

The shit is so insidious, subtle to start with that it's easy to get drawn in. There is no sudden change, it's a drip effect drawing you in and turning reason on it's head. It feels as though it's everywhere at the moment, the difference is that those who were drawn in by subtle means are trying to break the rest of down with a hammer- they are evangelical about it and preach it everywhere. They can't comprehend that the whole world doesn't think like them, they think you are odd if you don't and need to be brought into the fold.

This makes some people question themselves and start to parrot what they hear so they fit with the crowd.

Results like Cardiff show we are still a civilised society rejecting the rhetoric of hate.

I am giving buses a go today (car making funny noises). Am looking at 1hr 30mins for an 11 mile journey. First bus smelled of piss but bus station got a nice cool breeze through it. I didn't learn to drive until my 30s so I'm not a stranger to public transport but bloody hell, no wonder so many people jump in their cars!

That's a really moving article. Well done, Mr King.

I am reminded of the guy whose son was killed (less than 6 miles from me) in 2011 and who stood in front of a baying mob to prevent violence.

itsgettingweird · 15/08/2025 12:17

I met a friend for dinner last night.

Thank goodness we are on the same page politics wise. It was a nice civilised chat amongst the general chit chat.

Really is, it’s beyond comprehension what those families have endured & continue to live with utterly heartbreaking.

I haven't seen the thread but is this any help?

Have experience of Lockdown drills twice during working in a care home. It's scary stuff because of evacuation procedures which you are trained in but still.

My son was part of a lockdown drill in his school when he was 15, 2017. We were not pre informed, despite son having an ECHP and rightly so. He was okay.

If Reform had won both byes then it most certainly would be headline news.
