I could have done with these reports and fact checkings on a thread yesterday

Newspaper gives misleading impression of the percentage of sexual crime committed by foreign nationals

https://bsky.app/profile/danielhilson0.bsky.social/post/3lvstzl3mik2m

IPSO finds The Telegraph to have breached clause 1 of the Editors’ Code in an article which impressively managed to present data sourced by Rob Bates’ Centre for Migration Control ‘think tank’ more misleadingly than the original CMC report did! @jdportes.bsky.social https://www.ipso.co.uk/rulings/00910-25/

That would be useful on a currently running thread where the "all-asylum-seekers-are-out to-rape-us" crap is being spewed yet again by a poster.

I don't have the stomach for countering it, though.

I'd love to have seen Prescott obliterate Reform.

God, yes. He could have metaphorically strung up Farage by the balls.

cardibach · 07/08/2025 18:36

I can see it too @placemats
Not suggesting they normally look alike or have anything else in common though.

As LIttledrummergirl said, it's the particular angle and the lighting. I mean no offence to John, who was fabulous.

Remember the RIP John Prescott thread that attracted some real nastiness?

placemats · 07/08/2025 18:43

Anyway moving on. Fag Ash well knows that August is the silly month when it comes to politics. And if there's anyone who thinks they're the master, it's the failure that is Fartage.

Who in the name of goodness and decency would follow this man? Captured by a cult. I see that Ann Widdecombe has also supported trans women in the female prison estate in certain circumstances.

It is. I’m not defending that. I’m saying she may be trying to sell because it’s not a good plan. And she didn’t evict anyone. Facts matter.

Sorry but its constructive eviction....

Say she sells, tenants haven't a scooby what the new LL will do, so they found another property with a more secure tenancy and left... pretty common way of getting tenants to go without a sect 21.

If she really wanted to sell, she'd have stuck with it, not a few weeks later, re let but with a 20% hike, something she couldn't have done with the original tenants as they could have gone to a rent tribunal.

Bear in mind she did all his before the new renters rights bill becomes law..... which would have blocked her doing this.

Would you give a Tory minister in Government who did he same, the benefit of the doubt?

I wouldn't, its blatant what she did.

Edited

It was months, not weeks, wasn’t it? I’m not defending it really, she should have got rid before becoming a Labour MP I reckon, but she didn’t evict them.

I take your point that she didn't evict them... but
she may as well of, they had no choice but to leave.... i ve seen what happens to people when LLs do this.... its a massive worry, there is massive shortage of properties out there.

For a Lab Minister, as a LL, to behave like this is despicable.

Its also a gift horse to the opposition, which given Labours position in the polls, is quite stupid.

You’ve done your share. You already deserve a medal for valour.

That is nice of you. I am retiring from the fray for a while. Sticking to this thread and light hearted stuff for now.

Alexandra2001 · 07/08/2025 19:49

According to Ch4 News, an email was sent to the tenants, stating their lease wouldn't be renewed and they had 4 months to leave......

So yes they were evicted.

Not what I’ve read. They were offered a rolling month lease but declined. Either way, if your fixed term lease isn’t renewed it’s not eviction.
As I said,I’m not defending her being a LL. I just think facts matter.

cardibach · 07/08/2025 20:23

She’s resigned anyway. which I think is the right decision.

I dip in and out depending on time and my energy levels. Some threads move so quickly, it's all I can do to read and keep up.

Maybe mnhq some knowledgeable posters on here could put together a list of common myths used to spread hate, an explanation of why they are wrong and links to facts. Thos could be something that mnhq would approve, and could be placed as a sticky at the top of every page in contentious threads
This would have to be fact checked, non biased and truthful- a hard ask in this day and age

Maybe we could come up with one that we can post when we need to, so a pre prepared counter that meets mnet guidelines, doesn't engage with the bullshit, but contains enough information for lurkers. Aiming to educate rather than argue? I use we loosely, many people here are much more able in this than me. If we can get mnhq to ok it claims that "hatred is mainstream" can be met with a blanket, fact checked post.

I don't know if im even allowed to suggest this? Is organising ourselves OK, or will it be seen as a mean girl clique picking on people?

I guess if it's deleted then I'll have my answer.

Well that was prompt.

placemats · 07/08/2025 20:49

The BBC have form for 'quits' in the headlines. She resigned.

Alexandra2001 · 07/08/2025 20:58

Good, draw a line under this.

Looks like property was her thing!

A pity Starmer called her work "Diligent...

PandoraSocks · 07/08/2025 20:58

Good. Done and dusted quickly.

SerendipityJane · 07/08/2025 21:00

Notonthestairs · 07/08/2025 20:46

Well that was prompt.

Well hopefully that will shut the "they're as bad as the Tories" crowd up.

I do wonder if it was personal integrity or a crystal clear message from Starmer that he would remove her otherwise that caused it ? In a way I'd like to believe the latter.

BIossomtoes · 07/08/2025 21:15

That’s a very good result.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 07/08/2025 22:09

I really wish Labour would think about the optics though. Who on God's earth thought it was a good idea having a private landlord as the Homelessness Minister?
Although perhaps there are no Labour MPs who aren't private landlords nowadays
