Anybody want to find a holiday for me?

snemrose · 16/07/2025 19:11

Would like to go last week of August for 4 nights/5 days - preferably Devon or Dorset. Definitely south anyway. 2 adults 2 kids. We are not fussed about the accommodation but would like to walk to a sandy beach and have parking. Budget is £1000. I have been looking for hours and it is definitely doable but now I am overwhelmed with choice and getting myself stressed. I don’t know any places down that way particular. Don’t want it Bournemouth busy. My dad has very kindly offered to treat me and my kids after a tough few years and now I am able to go away I am finding it all overwhelming! If anyone is bored and would like to look? Very cheeky of me I know and not exactly an exciting search!

I belong to a holiday let group and have posted your question.

Do the children need their own rooms?

Ooh thank you. We are happy with 2 bedrooms. Me and dd20 can go in together and ds 12 and 15 can share

this looks nice in Dorset.

Mumteedum · 16/07/2025 21:40

Personally wouldn't go for the Roddy House one. Nice house but it's a modern housing estate. Doesn't feel holiday-y to me.

@snemrose

This may fit the bill?

check in 25/8 - 29/8 £935.53 (contact owner direct you could "possibly" pay £800)

guessed the children are between 2-12

Wow! Could not get any closer to the beach - love it

Have you looked at Charmouth? It’s Lyme’s quieter neighbour. Great bus links, 10 minutes to Lyme, further on to sidmouth (sidmouth is pebbly except one area when the tide is out but lovely for a wander). There are a couple of accommodation options in Charmouth but something like this? https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/854142351566061947?adults=2&check_in=2025-08-26&check_out=2025-08-30&children=2&location=Charmouth%2C%20Dorset&search_mode=regular_search&infants=0&pets=0&source_impression_id=p3_1752695003_P3NDjUeEPd0M4aZr&previous_page_section_name=1001
the beach is generally pebbles but with a large sand stretch and rock pools. Fantastic for fossil hunting but would advise going with a guide due to cliff falls etc and you’ll learn what to look for https://charmouth.org/chcc/category/fossil-events/
Shallow slope into sea so good for kids.
Lots of lovely things to do nearby.

Don’t know how I missed this one! Love this too

I live in Dorset & know the area v well. How old are your kids & what do they like doing? Are we talking sandcastles on the beach or do you need teen type activities?

So many amazing places! Thank you all so much. This is still my favourite so far.
I am sure there was one near Burgh Island, unless I am going mad - but want to find that one again. Always wanted to visit Burgh Island. I’ll have another look tomorrow. Thank you all so much

They are 12,15 and 20. We would perhaps like to hire bikes one day but they are all happy messing about on the beach and in the sea or mooching around places, good walks, etc They are very easy going and just like exploring new places. So any recommendations would be great! Close to a beach to walk to is top priority. We will cope with anything else 🤣 but want the sea within touching distance

Have you noticed on that one you have to bring your own bedding and “clean the flat for the next occupant”?!

That is not normal! Yea give it a once over and empty bins etc but this sounds like they don’t do any cleaning between lets! No thanks!

Oh well spotted! Could squeeze bedding in the car and would obviously leave place clean but I won’t be responsible for doing The Clean. So that one’s out.
Second favourite is the Charmouth one but will look again after work to check I am not missing anything with that place

beetr00 · 17/07/2025 14:37

yes I did eventually notice that too @snemrose also towels need to be taken with you as well😕

Wrt cleaning between bookings, may be worth dropping the host a quick line, seems a bit off putting though?

Whichever you and the children choose, have a fabulous holiday. 🏖️

Squareroot · 18/07/2025 13:24

I suggest Lyme Regis, it’s got a selection of good beaches, great food & is quite funky so good for older kids. It doesn’t have a train station but you can jump on the Dorset Explorer bus if you want to go to travel around or you can walk the Jurassic Coast. There’s plenty of varied holiday accommodation there too so you’d have a good range to choose from

snemrose · 20/07/2025 16:41

Looking at Lyme Regis.
Also thinking - do you reckon I could kit us out for camping for £1k - thinking we could then use again. Honest answers please 🙈
