I'm UK grounded for the foreseeable future waiting on a minor operation so figured I'd maybe take a few uk city breaks :) solo probably.

I love pretty architecture.

Plenty of free time and no mobility issues.

I love London. I've technically done most Scottish cities. And Bristol. But happy to hear about everyones experiences.

Do the “bar walls” walk in York ..great way to see around the city.Avoid all the Harry Potter knock off shops though

Harrogate is a town not a city but is beautiful in parts and you can easily get to Ripley and Knaresborough from there.

ginasevern · 13/07/2025 16:41

York, Exeter, Wells and also St David's in Pembrokeshire. It's officially the UK's smallest city but is beautiful. Plus you have the gorgeous West Wales coast nearby.

beguilingeyes · 13/07/2025 17:24

Shrewsbury is gorgeous. Salisbury, Lincoln, Ely, Newcastle is lush.
Durham
Chichester
Oxford

MinnieMountain · 13/07/2025 17:43

St David’s is lovely but it doesn’t exactly fit the city break brief.

Things to do in York

Jorvic viking centre
Castle museum
Railway museum
York dungeon
Walk the castle walls
York Minster
Betty's tea room( book as gets very busy)
Ghost bus tour & walking ghost tours
Walk along the shambles/shambles market
River tours
Check our 'SPARK' for lunch/tea - We always come here and theres lots of different food vendors and great vibe.

We've done all of the above and had a great time. Forgot to say Harrogate as well, as lovely as York but not so busy!

Love Edinburgh, St Andrews, Harrogate, Cambridge, Durham and Oxford.

I used to like York and Chester but they are both stag and hen central now so I avoid.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/07/2025 18:07

York,
Liverpool,
London

York, Lincoln, Durham & Helmsley are my favourites

If you're touring those, make sure you visit Beverley too.

Norwich, Elm Hill, Cathedral and Castle. Great cafes and quirky shops in The Lanes.
Big outdoor market.
Close to lovely beaches and Norfolk Broads.
Art Galleries and cultural friendly city.

ThePure · 13/07/2025 18:55

We’re in Norwich today and it is absolutely beautiful. Loving the cobbled streets and the independent shops.

Platosrevenge · 13/07/2025 20:12

Tbf there’s not that much to do in Harrogate itself, just naice shops and cafes.
Harlow Carr gardens is a nice 1/2 day and valley gardens pleasant to stroll in. Brimham rocks and Knaresborough aren’t too far away but not walkable by any means.
I’d say York is a better bet but avoid weekends as it’s stag and hen do central.

IthasYes · 13/07/2025 20:20

Chester
Bath
Cambridge

It's a bit out of the way, but Canterbury is lovely and also Whitstable is close by.

emmetgirl · 13/07/2025 22:01

Edinburgh and York!

blanketsnuggler · 13/07/2025 22:06

Another shout for York, and Oxford too.

IDontHateRainbows · 13/07/2025 22:07

Edinburgh is beautiful

Ariela · 13/07/2025 22:10

Nobody's mentioned Malvern or Ledbury, not cities, but I like both a lot for a good old mooch around, also Shaftesbury.

EstaGo · 13/07/2025 22:11

Ripon. Fountains Abbey, Ripon Cathedral, Spa Gardens, museums, arts hub, market, canal, Ripon Racecourse, loads of indie shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants.

We’re just outside Skipton, love York, Northumberland, London, Nottingham, Lincoln, etc, however, we’ve just been to Newcastle for a Sam Fender concert and bloody loved it!
kids 11 and 14, town centre great vibe (as said but DD14)! Loads of restaurants, pubs etc that felt kid ok, good shopping, and I’m sure other things to do if we had had the time!

Goatblu · 13/07/2025 22:23

Bath. I used to live there and still love it. I was there yesterday.
