I'm UK grounded for the foreseeable future waiting on a minor operation so figured I'd maybe take a few uk city breaks :) solo probably.

I love pretty architecture.

Plenty of free time and no mobility issues.

I love London. I've technically done most Scottish cities. And Bristol. But happy to hear about everyones experiences.

Liverpool would be my second.

I’m in Liverpool now and the area around Albert Docks and the beautiful Liver building makes my heart sing. Love it here

You could do a bit of a tour, Ripon, Harrogate, York. Lots of pretty architecture. Visit Fountains Abbey / the water gardens. Go to the Turkish baths in Harrogate. Potter round the walls in York / visit the minster.

Even before opening the thread, I thought York would be popular and for good reason too! If you like pretty architecture, then check out York Minster.

There are plenty of places in North Yorkshire in general with beautiful buildings or ruins to admire - Castle Howard, Fountains Abbey in Ripon. DH and I visited Jervaulx Abbey in Masham recently and went for an icecream nearby at Brymor Icecream parlour.
Other towns in NY - Harrogate, Knaresborough, Richmond. I shuddered when someone mentioned Darlington though! Personally, I think Darlo is rough, but they do have a lovely theatre there.

A bit further up towards County Durham you have quaint little towns like Kirkby Stephen and Barnard Castle. The Bowes Museum is a magnificent building to behold, and the grounds are beautiful.

Durham
Alnwick
Newcastle Upon Tyne

Liverpool
Chester

Warwick
Stratford Upon Avon

Cambridge
Ely

Not a city but I live in Stratford upon Avon and it’s a lovely place to visit.

Obviously you have the theatres which are well worth a visit and you can tour the costume department too.
All the Shakespeare houses, Ann Hathaway’s cittage, Shakespeare’s birthplace etc are beautiful old buildings.
You can see Shakespeare’s old classroom
(allegedly!) at KES school.

Then you have some gorgeous old pubs.

Take a walk along the river, feed the swans, do a boat trip.

There is a butterfly farm.

Some gorgeous buildings if you walk around, excellent walks.

Holy Trinity Church where Shakespeare is buried and you can walk in a loop from there around the river.

Easy reach of Warwick if you want more architecture and the amazing castle.

Belfast/Northern Ireland. It’s an hour on the plane from most UK airports or you can take a ferry. It has a rich history/culture, loads to do including a world class museum (Titanic) and market (St. George’s), a castle, a beautiful university area, great bars and restaurants, a city hall that looks like a meringue where you can get coffee or lunch, and stunning scenery. It’s big but walkable and a great place for a short (or longer) break.

I'm from Manchester (ish) and have no clue why anyone would ever visit here.
I would visit Liverpool which is fabulous, so is Chester and Harrogate,

Norwich is always my number one choice but there are many other lovely cities and towns in this country. Chester, Lichfield, Cambridge, Bury St. Edmunds, Stamford, Leeds, Keswick, Chichester, Colchester, Bath and Exeter. Also, don't forget the big forner industrial cities, most of which have been refurbished. Liverpool has a real vibe, Birmingham has many interesting places and the Black Country Museum is nearby. Newcastle is also worth a visit. There are so many places in this beautiful country of ours in addition to these. The Malverns, Peak District and Lake District are stunning. Ironbridge is very interesting and the coastline is so very varied wherever you go.

I love Manchester! It's so buzzy and there's loads to do.
We go to concerts at The Met in Bury fairly regularly and love the area.
Much love for the trams too. I wish we had trams in central London.

Seconded. We had a lovely holiday in an air bnb in a converted mill at the top of the hill in Bradford on Avon a few years ago. The views were spectacular.

Stratford (if you like Shakespeare)

Does it have to be a city? I had one of the best UK holidays in Ambleside. Great walks around the lake and to Grasmere or up the peaks if you feel energetic. Great restaurants in the town. Bookshop, cinema.

Never been but always wanted to go to Whitby
