Apparently Starmer has employed ex Sun editor for permanent secretary for Communications. As you can guess it will go like a lead balloon in Liverpool. I feel sorry for the Liverpool Labour MPs who have to field those questions from their constituents.

He called for gunships to be used on small boats.

@Saucery yes I saw that one as well, I don’t think all these anonymous posts are unconnected. The hotel went into administration apparently and I believe it’s now been bought out, but for now they aren’t taking long term bookings I think.

Saucery · 26/07/2025 15:10

I don’t know the poster personally (of the one I saw) but she seems ‘real’ enough. Unfortunately, I do know a couple of the people responding to her and they are thick as pigshit, from thick as pigshit families who grew up in exactly the same area as me, with the same demographic and opportunities but appear to have have pissed said opportunities away and never crawled out of their little bubble. Reform is a gift to them, as it excuses why they have done fuck all with their lives. Apparently, illegal immigrants are to blame <can’t roll my eyes enough>

Interesting @SerendipityJane . The tv series I mentioned does deal with the attitudes towards the refugees by other countries. Each had a strict number for entry. How times have changed.

Eta obviously the series deals with a hypothetical situation.

I can't support that.

countrygirl99 · 26/07/2025 15:22

@MsJinks there's a hotel used for asylum seekers accommodation in the next village to us. It's a relatively affluent area and I've heard zero reports of problems. The hotel had been for sale for a couple of years before someone bought it with the intention of using it for that purpose.

Interesting that neither Sky nor BBC websites seem to be reporting on this:

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/jul/25/ex-sun-editor-david-dinsmore-to-take-up-new-government-communications-role

I’m not sure about this. On the one hand, The Sun. But on the other - The Sun does a brilliant job of getting its stories and messages out to a lot of people, quickly and easily - which is exactly what TLP/Keir Starmer needs.

Ex-Sun editor David Dinsmore to take up government communications role

Dinsmore will join Whitehall as civil servant in top communications role after reportedly impressing Starmer during interview

Anyone else just sick of this? Lucy White of GB News as if this “contribution” left any doubt 🙄

I wonder what country Lucy White flew in from, and if when in that country spoke even basic greetings in the local language.

There have been some very funny piss takes of that Lucy White tweet. She has posted before about hearing other languages spoken in UK airports upsets her ❄️
She seems to believe perennially angry blather = journalism.

I agree to an extent BIWI. They certainly do need better comms.

It’s a civil service appointment isn’t it?
Best he doesn’t attend conference this year.

Denmark and Sweden behaved very well during WW2.

FFS reform councillors have resigned over that sort of shit. I would like to think that KS has higher standards but, yet again, I thought wrong.

placemats · 26/07/2025 16:26

They did @SerendipityJane but still the far right has inroads and you have to wonder would it happen today. "The past is a foreign country, they do things differently there."

placemats · 26/07/2025 16:35

Norway is also interesting under the Quisling puppet Nazi Government. The resistance, called Home Front, against it was over all occupations - teachers wore paperclips. @SerendipityJane.

PandoraSocks · 26/07/2025 11:00

I am fed up with the Reform lot. We are told we musn't be nasty to the Reform inclined as it will make more people support Reform. We need to understand people's concerns.

Bugger that. I am not going to tiptoe around bigots.

I agree! Their whole identity is about being a victim of imagined crimes.

I have an issue with their first bullet point. What are 'countries like Sweden, Netherlands and Argentina'??? I know I'm a grammar pedant but that's sloppy.

It doesn’t say like. It says those countries specifically.

It’s hard to see how someone with Labour principle could work for the Sun (or vice versa) but if he can get the message out it’s what’s needed. So many good things either not reported or reported with a spurious negative spin.

I don’t think it means KS agrees or will have that as the message. It’s an odd appointment but maybe not as bad as it sounds.

Piggywaspushed · 26/07/2025 17:20

Countries like Sweden, Argentina, and the Netherlands show particularly strong support.

Interesting how these “concerned residents” cite women’s safety as a reason for not having asylum seekers in their areas https://www.theguardian.com/society/2025/jul/26/two-in-five-arrested-for-last-summers-uk-riots-had-been-reported-for-domestic-abuse

Accusing others of things they are guilty of themselves. Standard.

Agreed. They never take it on board, ignore and know exactly what they are doing. We see it a lot on threads on Mumsnet about immigration and racism.

How can anyone defend "native British culture" without defining or describing it?

How can anyone defend "native British culture" without defining or describing it?

It doesn’t exist. English, Welsh, Scottish, N Irish, yes. British no. But those banging on about it are the same people who moan about road signs in Welsh and claim people start speaking Welsh as soon as they enter pubs. They don’t care about culture b

placemats · 26/07/2025 17:37

Northern Irish is a bit tricky re culture. To a certain extent also in Scotland, Wales and the North South and South West divide in England.
