Northern Irish is a bit tricky re culture. To a certain extent also in Scotland, Wales and the North South and South West divide in England.

Those Scottish borders have historically been rather fuzzy. I live a stone's throw from of Neville's Cross - Wikipedia en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Neville%27s_Cross Neville's Cross yet I'm a good 90 minutes south of the current Scottish border.

Such a battle could never happen there, again. They'd get stuck in traffic.

True. But still…no single British culture. And those going on about it mostly don’t like individual countries’ culture.

I don’t think it’s a particularly odd appointment. It’s not a political appointment, he’s going to be a civil servant who are supposed to be apolitical. Hopefully he’ll be a more effective strategist than they’ve had so far.

It allows people to suggest it’s hypocritical. I agree though. Shouldn’t be controversial.

@PickAChew 😂

Yes civil servants are supposed to be apolitical in their role, especially within a direct ministerial role, and above certain levels. @BIossomtoes .

You’d have to build yourself a bastle house @PickAChew Grin They’d soon give up after a few bus lane fines though…..

I bet they're lovely and cool in our week of summer!

That first one isn't far from Newcastle. And Ponteland definitely isn't pronounced the French way 😁

BIWI · 26/07/2025 18:28

Oooh! My friend lives in a house with its own Bastle! In Northumberland.

LlttledrummergirI · 26/07/2025 20:15

Well given that Wales was promised that the oldest son of the King would become Prince of Wales and serve them- there are still no plans for an official investiture.

Maybe Wales should cut ties with England # not a Welsh King?

Wales could take back its individuality. It already has its own parliament, anthem and flag. It could have its own identity.

Slightly tongue in cheek-but there is no single British culture.

BestIsWest · 26/07/2025 20:42

Parliament, anthem, flag AND language @LlttledrummergirI

Which is fair enough.

As long as you never ever refer to French culture. Or Italian culture. Or American culture ... (runs away and hides).

Not quite the same thing. Yes, different bits of countries have their own traditions and cultural practices, but we’re talking about actual different countries here…

SerendipityJane · 26/07/2025 21:16

A riposte to some ....

Shouldn't they be in Scotland at the moment?

@BestIsWest you are absolutely right. Sadly the wine has gone to my head and I can't believe I forgot to mention the beautiful lilt from the land of my father's. Thank you for the reminder, I'll put myself on the naughty step and think about my misdemeanor.

Don't let these men inside a playground near you. Avoid on the street. Jesus wept.

How do you get one of those? I want one.

The Telegraph is now Daily Mail fodder with pretentions. Notable that there is no pay wall on this shit stirring article. It is so irresponsible.

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/07/26/taliban-fighters-brought-to-britain-in-kill-list-airlift/

Note all the "allegedly" "it seems" "it is said" and quotes from anonymous sources. There is very little concrete evidence.

(I only saw the article because someone started a frankly hysterical thread about it, which has now been deleted).

The Daily Mash had this piece on the DT titled, "The Daily Telegraph guide to reporting the Opposite of Reality"! 😂

You need to be old and female, from what I remember. They tend to go off peak. So when I was in Almeria in April, the hotel was rammed with them.

First time I went, there was a lot of civil war survivors. Something we may not really factor into recent Spanish history. Some of these grannies were well gangsta.
