This was specifically stopped by I think iirc the Blair government to prevent them undercutting UK job seekers

Asylum seekers used to be able to apply for permission to work if they had been waiting more than 6 months for a decision. Blair government changed this, as you say, and it is now 12 months, I think.

ETA: the change was made in order to distinguish asylum from economic migration according to Hansard.

The major pull factors to the. U.K. are

  1. the language. It’s a common second/third language around t(e world, particularly in places where we’ve had a presence.
  2. the perception that British police are fair and honest and British people are not as racist as many places. I might disagree with this, but it’s a perception I’ve heard on podcasts etc with people who have spoken to refugees.
I don’t think there’s much we can do about 1 and 2 isn’t something we would want to alter, is it? Though Farage and crew are doing their best on that I suppose.

The biggest pull is a ready supply of employment through a porous system that allows companies to pocket the profit and pass the liability.

However that is never going to change. All the companies whose dividends make up Nigel Farages bonuses depend on it.

If a situation hasn't changed in 50 years, then there has to be a positive energy being expended keeping it that way. That is basic physics.

Parliament is supreme. If they wanted to pass a law that fined (say) Deliveroo a million pounds for every illegal worker caught wearing their logo on their bike delivering an order via their app, they could do it.

No ifs. No buts.

Why don't Reform push that as a policy ?

'just concerned'

Epping hotel anti-migrant protests were organised by members of Neo-Nazi groups
Two members of the Homeland Party have been identified as administrators of the Facebook group organising the protests

Last night there was a lovely troll* who started a couple of threads to whip up hate abput the Canary Wharf hotel. A couple of MN regulars were supportive but most weren't, thankfully.

*Confirmed by MNHQ to be a PBP, for the benefit of the lurkers.

DuncinToffee · 24/07/2025 12:33

Glad I missed those

🚨 | Jeremy Corbyn MP & Zarah Sultana MP have confirmed that they will be launching an (as yet unnamed) new political party.

Asylum seekers aren’t here illegally, though cannot legally work. And if they do they’re not dangerous figures on bikes - as depicted like some 1950s burglar poster- sigh.
I have delivered pizza in the past and believe outside legal work/family then most likely to be illegal migrants (overstayers), and unemployed local legal anyone, delivering from local take outs - it’s the shop who employs their drivers as far as I ever knew, not just eat personally employing them for example, they are just like a middle man for the order.
But I’ve often thought that those most against immigration will be the most upset when no one is bringing your kebab after a few cans. Maybe just me being cynical and bitchy. Not sure why benefit fraud is ignored in favour of illegal working fraud in these areas - especially after some threads on here! They’ll also if not legal be earning peanuts, especially now tipping is more or less gone. Not really expressing any opinion on this or rights/wrongs of it all apart from the poster is disturbing - it’s more likely delivery drivers get into bother out delivering and should be scared of some customers!
As always it’s small boats get the headlines, and the hatred, but they’re never going to stop because of so many reasons - and revolting Fartage isn’t going to manage it either. Time we accepted reality and governments educated us properly on different types of migration too - I know on this thread it is understood mainly, but many misconceptions are around and are very frustrating.

Alexandra2001 · 24/07/2025 13:33

X Channel migration is a huge issue for the public, it wont go away... if only due to the costs.

So unless Labour do stop it, then Reform will do v. well at the next GE.

Reform don't need to stop it, they just need to say they will and that'll be enough.

DuncinToffee · 24/07/2025 13:37

Quite. It isn’t an issue at all rationally speaking. It’s the message that need to change and while the press is so right wing that won’t happen. Not sure what the answer is. There’s no real solution to desperate people doing desperate things.

placemats · 24/07/2025 17:18

It used to be that those in power would prop up dodgy Governments that engaged in mass extermination. But we don't do that anymore. Oh wait...

Evenstar · 24/07/2025 17:46

There certainly is a great deal of misinformation around asylum seekers/small boats etc. A hotel near where I live was taken over for accommodation, local newspapers Facebook groups stoked up ill feeling claiming it was for “illegals” and when it was looked into it turned out that it was asylum seekers from Afghanistan who had their families with them and were largely people who had helped our armed forces. I explained this to someone who was opposed to the hotel being used, they were surprised and said “Oh well that’s different then…”

The comms around the issue is appalling, but with a right wing media and so many people trying to stir up trouble on social media it is hard to get any other message across. Our local council opened applications for some new over 55 flats, they were for people who had lived in the borough etc and there were people jumping on their Facebook post claiming they would fill it with “illegals”

countrygirl99 · 24/07/2025 18:09

There's an asylum hotel in the next village to us. I've never heard any adverse comments at all.

cardibach · 24/07/2025 18:11

@Evenstar every single report on local media about housing development gets those ‘for illegals’ posts. It’s depressing. Even posts about building that isn’t housing related get them. It has to be coordinated, surely?

placemats · 24/07/2025 18:12

That happened where I live as well @Evenstar Thankfully no protesters, but lots of people saying on the door during campaigning that they were going to vote reform because of the situation in the hotel. When we explained they were Afghanistan asylum families it was met with disbelief. I don't understand it. One of them was a teacher! They knew that the children were being educated in the local school.

I don’t get that impression on FB. That rubbish is spouted by people I know, more often than not. It’s a result of the pervasive narrative driven by Farage etc. These are people with local businesses, work in schools, hospitals, care homes, shops….. I think How can you NOT see how you are being manipulated ffs?. Sad truth is that many of them don’t even care if they are. Typing iLlEgALlS! on FB gives them that 2 seconds of attention they seem to need. Dopamine hit for dopes.

Alexandra2001 · 24/07/2025 19:03

I'm not entirely happy with this India trade deal, India is propping up Russia after all.
Which in turn is threatening all of Europe's security and causing us to spend a lot more on defence than any real trade benefits, if any, we'll get from this deal.

Actually, you may be right. On my local FB page, every time someone moans about tge council or what ever, there will be a handful of replies about immigrants.

It is very depressing.

Keir Starmer to hold emergency talks over Gaza ‘humanitarian catastrophe'

Our local police force were out confiscating illegal e bikes and e scooters today.

After yesterday’s sterling effort by the Government regarding delivery drivers, guess what, their posts on social media are being spammed by people urging them to go after takeaway delivery riders instead of “kids enjoying the summer holidays” 🙄

MsJinks · 24/07/2025 20:30

I hope if any ‘illegal’ delivery driver is caught they were on their way to deliver to one of those being vocal about it - quite probable I think tbh. My old boss was British but born in Iraq - the comments could be appalling - he always told me not to say anything back, they were spending their cash in his place - yes, they still chose to eat/order from there, which also annoyed me, so hypocritical.
It was a very out of the way ex pit village - still very wary of anyone different, perhaps as it’s quite rare for ‘outsiders’ from anywhere to move in though. I remained an outsider for years - glad to leave.

For a sizeable part of yesterday the name suggestion trending on Twitter was “Jezbollah”, beating PartyMcPartyface into second place.
