I don’t expect it to last long enough for any name to get traction. Who remembers Change UK now? Just a few politics geeks.

PandoraSocks · 25/07/2025 10:16

Another interesting result from Wales.

Llanrumney is quite a deprived area and the sort of area where you might expect Reform to win, but even so it didn't quite manage it despite getting a big share of the vote.

I have seen many readings of the numbers that indicate Reforms biggest obstacle is Nigel Farage. He may think people have forgotten he is "Mr. Brexit", but clearly enough do.

The next general election campaign may well start to feature the UKs relations with the EU as a talking point. And given the growing sentiment towards rejoining (spoiler alert: ain't gonna happen) a party led by Farage may have reached the limit to growth.

We've already seen Reform councillors calling for more immigration. And ol' Nige himself is quite happy to see more foreigners in the UK.

For God's sake. The might as well dust off May's Go Home bus, too.

What is wrong with them? All they are doing is turning off their own voters.

As for Farage, I think he will be the cause of something (else) bad happening. But he will wriggle out of the blame.

Edited

Yes, they are absolutely are.

placemats · 25/07/2025 14:06

Not sure I agree @SerendipityJane that rejoining the EU will be on the campaign trail agenda in 4 years time. The LibDems may well pursue the issue and will probably garner votes in the South as a result.

I know quite a few former Tory voters, totally pissed off with the party and of course hate Labour but will never forgive Farage over Brexit, even though some did vote for it.

This "might" explain why they can't get further ahead in the 'polls, even though Labour are doing all they can to turn off their traditional and new voters.

The major pull factors to the. U.K. are

  1. the language. It’s a common second/third language around t(e world, particularly in places where we’ve had a presence.
  2. the perception that British police are fair and honest and British people are not as racist as many places. I might disagree with this, but it’s a perception I’ve heard on podcasts etc with people who have spoken to refugees.
I don’t think there’s much we can do about 1 and 2 isn’t something we would want to alter, is it? Though Farage and crew are doing their best on that I suppose.

I agree though would add the ease to get unofficial jobs is a factor, and agree with President Macron about this.

I don't think it will be on the agenda in 2029, a customs union will be though.

Farage latest 🙄

And Reform will say it's a way back into the EU and more illegal immigrants. Totally bonkers but they rely on mentally ill people voting for them, despite despising them.

Because being out of the EU has proved such a success in reducing immigration ?

I noticed an Express headline yesterday. It said "Despite Brexit something is doing better than France".

Even they are admitting the truth now.

Gosh, I mean……it’s certainly retro Hmm

placemats · 25/07/2025 17:19

By 2029 almost every party bar the Conservative and Reform parties will be pushing for closer ties with the EU.

The India deal is a good negotiation point. Let's hope it's a way back to closer ties.

The Concord air crash was horrendous.

End of an era. And an exhibit in the case for us going backwards.

Not quite sure why Farage chose the apogee of peacetime Anglo-French co-operation to illustrate his point. He even kept the foreign spelling approved by Tony Benn.

Evenstar · 25/07/2025 18:20

Anyone else just sick of this? Lucy White of GB News as if this “contribution” left any doubt 🙄

DuncinToffee · 25/07/2025 18:25

She sounds nice

https://bsky.app/profile/sundersays.bsky.social/post/3lusksqqtjs2x

Lucy Jayne White says she was often labelled racist for her views at university, unfairly. She is a Restore Britain supporter with Women's Safety UK.

Her immigration policy is 'zero in and 3 million out'. She claims remigration of legal migrants is important to be fair to developing countries.

If I were them, I'd send back an incredibly polite email thanking her for noticing the way M&S employ staff from a wide range of national and cultural backgrounds, the better to enable them to provide excellent customer service, often in the customer's own language - which may not be English.

PandoraSocks · 25/07/2025 20:43

Is it me or has MN been infested with pro-Reform racists these past few days? It is quite sickening, although heartening that there has been a lot of pushback.

cardibach · 25/07/2025 20:46

It does seem to be Reform central lately.
