Places that gave you the heebie jeebies

There have been a few places have made me feel uneasy but only one place gave me such an immediate visceral reaction that I practically ran out of it… the Time Out Market ladies toilets in Porto.
Yes, really,
Such an odd experience.
It’s situated upstairs of the food market. Down a short corridor but the whole place was painted white. It gave off very clinical vibes, and even though I really needed to go, I just turned heel and literally legged it out of there.
Anyone actually been there and had similar feelings? Or anywhere else that has made you feel physically uneasy or have I been watching too many horror movies?
(Disclaimer: I’m a number one wuss and never watch horror movies!)

Someone else already said it but Portmeirion for me too. Don’t think I’ve spelt it quite right!
Just oddly creepy sinister feeling I got, like we were being watched from the behind the gaudy facades of the buildings. Couldn’t get away from there quick enough!

IndependentAdjudicator · 30/06/2025 22:44

There’s also a cemetery in Edinburgh gives me the heebies

@sweetkitty which one? I’ve been to the one where JKRowling got lots of inspiration for names for her characters in the Harry Potter novels.

Anyone East Midlands based? The old American Adventure site freaks me out with all of the old rides still there.

ForestFox44 · 30/06/2025 22:45

Spookywoods · 30/06/2025 20:06

Our local woods in Tunbridge Wells.Just feel stressed whenever I go there and worry about every noise I hear .My dog always resists entering the woods. Not sure if she senses my stress or she feels unnerved as well! Have sadly stopped going there now 😔

Oooh which ones? Im near t.wells

crocodilesandwich · 30/06/2025 22:46

Lands End- couldn’t leave fast enough!

Pinkandgreentrousers · 30/06/2025 22:47

My cellar, I've been down 4 times in the 25 years we have lived in this house.

IndependentAdjudicator · 30/06/2025 21:53

The man freaked out and ran out into the garden. *

Yes! That is it, we are definitely talking about the same episode.
I seem to remember the room was a room off a larger room.
Thanks @Pixiedust49 , now I know I didn’t imagine it!
Now, if you’ll be so good as to make your way to Time Out in Porto, and head upstairs to the ladies loos, and tell me if you get the heebie jeebies I’ll be much obliged 🤣

*ETA - this being Escape to the Country, it was more “grounds” than garden 😉😂

Edited

Yes a room off a room it was on a top floor? Would love to see it again …

qotsa · 30/06/2025 22:38

@IndependentAdjudicator Ha. I went to the Time Out Market in Porto last October but used the toilets downstairs. There was a massive queue but all seemed normal eerie-ness wise 😆

Upstairs @qotsa , upstairs!

Do you recall seeing a woman legging it down the stairs trying her hardest not to wee in fright?! 🤣

That’s just reminded me of an episode of Escape to the Country.
I think it was in Sussex, but there was one house which had a room upstairs that made the man freak out, and had to get out of it.
Does anyone else remember such an episode?
I have tried searching for it a few times but never found it!

There was an early episode of Location Location Location where Kirsty said the house had a horrible atmosphere and felt haunted.

M62 Yorkshire Moors especially in winter

I once took my eldest 2 nephews there. Was sad to read it when it closed.

Glastonbury town weirds me out. I hate going there but have friends who love it

@IndependentAdjudicator

Hi yes I have been several times. I think there's some local law that no changes can be made to it, so it should be as you last visited. Dymchurch is lovely too. We used to rent a little cottage there and drive out to Dungeness and Lydd Airport, Romney Marsh and Hythe. It's a lovely part of the country.

Whatshesaid96 · 30/06/2025 22:52

Fort Nelson - Portsmouth

The tunnels made my chest feel as if someone was sitting on it and a depressive dark feeling. I'm not a claustrophobic or a particularly sensitive person. Then on the top of the large open plan (I forget the name) I felt like we were being watched.

Previously mentioned also Portmerion

tintinsanfran123 · 30/06/2025 22:53

Greyfriars cemetery in Edinburgh. Felt such an intense foreboding presence that I turned and left almost as soon as I walked into it. Total heebie jeebies

Lands End- couldn’t leave fast enough!

Been there too! Didn’t feel weird to me, just over rated with those touristy XXX km to New York signs. Very contrived and not at all apocalyptic as the name ‘Land’s End’ suggests.

I find this so fascinating that one person’s creepy is another person’s meh.

ME: Dungeness and Land’s End - meh!
Time Out Porto ladies loos - heebie jeebies! 😂

Homestead Park in York. Don’t know why. I’ve had many lovely afternoons there, but it always feels a little oppressive going in and I always felt a sense of relief when leaving. Like a weight lifted.

Dymchurch! That’s it, that’s where we got the train from. Was trying to recall the place.
I am most definitely going to go back, thanks @YourChirpyFatball

Portmeirion for me too. There's just something creepy about it.

I also hated Carlisle. I can't explain why but it felt scary to me, despite being broad daylight. Couldn't wait to leave and have never been back.

Calling · 30/06/2025 23:01

Bembridge in the Isle of Wight: I stayed at a house there a long time ago and quickly got bad feeling from it, as though it was very creepy.
Years later, I visited the same house, having forgotten about my previous visit, and the same feeling came back very strongly.
It was just the house itself, not Bembridge itself, which is very pleasant, I hasten to add.

Delphiniumandlupins · 30/06/2025 23:01

Glencoe, whatever the weather there seem to be corners the sun doesn't reach. But it may be down to knowing the history. I'm not normally affected by atmosphere and have happily visited York (including the Minster), Staithes, Ripley, Greyfriars Cemetery in Edinburgh, the underground tunnels in Guernsey. I found Blackpool and Tintagel oddly soulless.

IndependentAdjudicator · 30/06/2025 23:02

Portmeirion has been mentioned a few times now, and yes, I have been there 😂
DH cousin got married there, must be about 20 years ago.
I found it a strange, odd place, rather than creepy weird.

Buxton. The whole town gave me the creeps.

Please tell me more. I have to go to Buxton in August.

Soonenough · 30/06/2025 23:04

Leicester . And Clacton. Just reminds of sad sad wasted lives . Very dramatic I know .

canidothisor · 30/06/2025 23:04

Whitgift shopping centre in Croydon. Weird vibes in that place!

Glastonbury (not the festival) a weird, off sort of vibe. Couldn’t get away from there fast enough.

Glastonbury gave me a terrible headache.
