Places that gave you the heebie jeebies

There have been a few places have made me feel uneasy but only one place gave me such an immediate visceral reaction that I practically ran out of it… the Time Out Market ladies toilets in Porto.
Yes, really,
Such an odd experience.
It’s situated upstairs of the food market. Down a short corridor but the whole place was painted white. It gave off very clinical vibes, and even though I really needed to go, I just turned heel and literally legged it out of there.
Anyone actually been there and had similar feelings? Or anywhere else that has made you feel physically uneasy or have I been watching too many horror movies?
(Disclaimer: I’m a number one wuss and never watch horror movies!)

Dungeness. Gave me the creeps and would never go back!

WhatMe123 · 30/06/2025 21:17

We viewed a house when we were looking to move and I had this really strong feeling that something did not want us in the house, a kinda feeling like I'd end up being pushed down the stairs to my death by a ghost or something, couldn't really explain it very odd but such a strong feeling. Anyway I didnt say anything to my family and we continued to look round the house. then my 4 year old saw an old school photo of a boy in the spare bedroom, obviously the home owners son, and she just said "oh I think he's dead now"
Right that's it everybody out 😂😂😂😂

mindutopia · 30/06/2025 21:23

Totally not a surprising one: Buchenwald concentration camp, there’s a basement room that is basically just meat hooks hanging from the walls and ceiling. You don’t have to use your imagination much to understand the horrors that happened in there. I literally felt like I couldn’t breathe. The sadness in that room was so oppressive. My German friend who came with us (who had obviously been there before) wouldn’t go in the room.

That’s just reminded me of an episode of Escape to the Country.
I think it was in Sussex, but there was one house which had a room upstairs that made the man freak out, and had to get out of it.
Does anyone else remember such an episode?
I have tried searching for it a few times but never found it!

Yes! I remember watching that episode he was absolutely freaked out! I’ve searched it too but can’t find anything online. I was starting to think I imagined it!

Bodmin Jail,my dog hated it.Different dog Jamaica Inn.

I came on to say Bodmin jail too, very creepy!

And the underground hospital on Guernsey, really uncomfortable

Bridport · 30/06/2025 21:33

The Lizard in Cornwall. We'd been staying at a campsite there and packed up the van and drove off early one evening after a lovely stay. About a mile along the lane I just got the most terrifying feeling that we were being chased. My husband was driving and without me saying anything he suddenly put his foot down and drove like the wind. Finally we turned onto a main road and he said he was surprised I'd not asked him to slow down (I don't like driving fast) and so I told him about the feeling I had. He said he'd had the exact same feeling - like we were being chased by hell hounds or something. We've never been back.

MrsFrumble · 30/06/2025 21:33

Milton Keynes. Horrible vibes.

You are the only person who has ever remembered that episode! I always thought I can’t have been the only person to have watched it!
The guy was really shaken wasn’t he, but his OH didn’t seem affected at all.
Very odd that neither of us can find that episode.
I’m sure it was in Sussex…

Avebury, near Devizes.

Used to regularly drive through there. The hair would always go up on the back of my neck.

I thought Avebury was lovely 🤣

Buxton. The whole town gave me the creeps.

I know what you mean about Buxton. It has a strange vibe.

farmlass · 30/06/2025 21:35

Parts of Derbyshire . Don’t know if it was so far from the sea and felt disorientated . ( I live on the east coast of Scotland ) Couldn’t work out which direction was north etc.

Also the houses that had their backs right up against cliff faces .
The geology of the area is odd. Open moorland and lovely walks and then these large “scars” , cliff faces , underground caves
Towns were lovely but countryside just made me feel be a bit weird .
No offence to any Derbyshire residents !!

Not creepy, just weird - the old Elephant &Castle shopping centre. Deserted and unlit in places, full of empty or random units and retro popcorn machines that probably hadn’t been touched in 10 years. It was like a Stranger Things set.

This reminds me of Walkden Town centre shopping centre. Most deserted, only the odd until open (apart from the uk’s largest Tesco apparently) but most bizarrely, the numerous multi coloured buckets absolutely everywhere to catch the drips from the leaky ceiling. We went last Christmas as there was a winter wonderland attraction thing there. Which was equally as creepy and weird.

helloquitty · 30/06/2025 21:41

In parts of Southsea (Portsmouth) there are ginormous houses that are now flats but when I look at them from the outside I get so unsettled

I know what you mean about Buxton. It has a strange vibe.

I used to work in Buxton and I concur. But it was the commute over the cat and fiddle road that used to give me the heebie jeebies.

That and the snake pass. Just so desolate in places.

Speaking of snake pass, we did the walk up to the B-29 crash site a couple of years ago and that was so eerie.

lyinginthebathpondering · 30/06/2025 21:42

Matlock Bath. I find it really oppressive.

IndependentAdjudicator · 30/06/2025 21:42

I asked DH and he said Bodmin.
We were driving down all the way from Cambridgeshire, listening to the radio without incident.
As soon as we were in the general area of Bodmin (not sure exactly whereabouts, as not from the area), all communications cut out.
We didn’t pay too much mind to it, as we just assume there was no signal in the area or something.
But (I didn’t realise at the time) from that moment, we didn’t have radio or music on at all throughout the whole trip (10 days - we were staying in Bude, then St Ives)
It wasn’t until we were driving the reverse journey home, the radio/music suddenly came on, just as we’re going through Bodmin that we realised it was a bit of a coincidence 🫣

Weird isn’t it. I watched it with DH I swear but he claims not to remember it. The man freaked out and ran out into the garden. Couldn’t stay in the room. And you’re right his partner wasn’t bothered at all.

My great aunt used to live in Wolverhampton, I just felt completely like my soul had been sucked of all joy when I went, never been somewhere like it where it felt so grim.

I burst into tears from nowhere once having treatment in an old hospital building. I just felt like something really bad had happened there…

I live in Wolverhampton and can agree 🤣
I remember going to visit Glastonbury when I was younger and had an awful feeling there all day, I would love to visit now and see if I still had the same feeling.

cattypussclaw · 30/06/2025 21:52

Staithes, up on the Yorkshire coast near Whitby. Village of the damned.

IndependentAdjudicator · 30/06/2025 21:53

The man freaked out and ran out into the garden. *

Yes! That is it, we are definitely talking about the same episode.
I seem to remember the room was a room off a larger room.
Thanks @Pixiedust49 , now I know I didn’t imagine it!
Now, if you’ll be so good as to make your way to Time Out in Porto, and head upstairs to the ladies loos, and tell me if you get the heebie jeebies I’ll be much obliged 🤣

*ETA - this being Escape to the Country, it was more “grounds” than garden 😉😂

Alcatraz, I know it's meant to be grim, I found it creepy and quite sad.

On a holiday in Scarborough years ago we stumbled upon the derelict old funfair, still in place. Couldn’t wait to leave.
