Celebrity deaths that shocked you

Which celebrity’s death do you feel shocked at?

I would probably say Robin Williams. Which is probably an obvious one. George Micheal and Bowie also.

How could I have forgotten?

Kurt Cobain.

Itawapuddytat · 30/06/2025 18:54

Carrie Fisher 😔

For me the first was Paula Yates, I could t get my head around someone with four kids taking drugs when they needed her, with the youngest one in the house and not considering the risks associated with that. Also Diana, that was a tragic accident, or was it? But how does someone with so much protection die that way?

Something to do with getting in a car with a drunk driver and not wearing a seatbelt?

ARichtGoodDram · 30/06/2025 19:01

John Smith. How different things could have been had he been PM instead of Blair.

Donald Dewar was a massive shock as well.

JFK Jnr
Nicole Simpson
Ayrton Senna

Tillow4ever · 30/06/2025 19:01

Adan Canto shocked and saddened me the most. I think it was because we had just discovered the series he starred in (The Cleaning Lady) and I found out by accident that he died from cancer (a kind that most survive) part way through filming season 3.

also shocked and saddened about Michelle Tractenberg as I was a massive Buffy fan.

Saddened by not shocked by Matthew Perry.

SereneHare · 30/06/2025 19:02

Paul Walker
Tommy Cooper because we saw it live on TV

threesocksmorgan · 30/06/2025 19:02

The Rev from Avenged sevenfold.
liam Payne. Not a fan, but so young.
David Bowie.

Picle · 30/06/2025 19:04

Sad - Caroline Flack - especially as I could almost identify with her situation.

Shocked and sad - Prince.

I punched my husband in the face once. He went to the social and told them I was violent and unstable. The fact that it happened after 18 years of narcissistic abuse didn’t matter. I was a violent spouse. Nobody knows the truth. As a side note, I’m 5 foot and 48kg. My H is 6 foot and 90kg. Women can’t inflict much damage. He almost killed me when he pushed me away after I went for him. I had a broken shoulder and bruises all over me. Yet I was the violent one. I feel desperately sorry for her.

Nobody knows the truth

You know the truth. That's what matters. Sorry you experienced this.

River Phoenix, I was 16, and believed in his clean living image and there he was dead on the pavement, foaming, it was a huge shock.

ScruffMuffin · 30/06/2025 19:05

Shocked: Christopher Reeve, Alan Rickman
Saddened: Sean Lock. I sobbed for days when he died.

Pebbleinyourshoe · 30/06/2025 19:05

Ayrton Senna, childhood hero fatally injured live on Grandstand on a Sunday afternoon then Moira Stewart confirmed on the 6 o’clock news that he was gone. Still can’t quite believe it.

GreenWriter · 30/06/2025 19:05

Nearly everyone mentioned here - but the first death that shocked me when I was a teenager was Kurt Cobain. I was a big Nirvana fan and 30 years later I still remember exactly where I was & what I was doing when it came on the news.

Also it’s a shock to hear someone has died who you don’t necessarily follow anymore so aren’t aware if they had issues etc, but remember fondly from a time in the past, eg, Matthew Perry.

Does anyone remember Whitney Houston’s daughter dying & was found in the bath like Whitney. That was sad in the same way as Peaches Geldof.

VanilleFraise · 30/06/2025 19:05

Kirsty maccoll for me. Her music helped me at a difficult time of my life.

Which bit shocked you? The bit where she was charged with domestic abuse?

The double standards when it comes to that woman are incredible.

I couldn’t agree more

ChronicallyChill · 30/06/2025 19:06

Caroline Aherne
Emma Chambers

annzen · 30/06/2025 19:06

The death of Caroline Aherne (Mrs. Merton, the Royle Family) touched me a lot. She died alone aged 52, but maybe she wanted it that way. She had a lot of struggles in her life, despite her wonderful talent.

annzen · 30/06/2025 19:07

@ChronicallyChill great minds think alike, cross post!

DrowningInSyrup · 30/06/2025 19:08

Michael Jackson was a paedophile. He paid people off, he admitted to having numerous young boys sleeping in his bed. Even if you think he wasn't a paedo, this should be enough to think what a creepy guy he was. The whole set up was bloody weird, makes my skin crawl.

The Queen died at 96, nothing sad or tragic about it.

Notjustabrunette · 30/06/2025 19:10

Micheal Mosley, desperately wanted him to be found safe and well.

DrowningInSyrup · 30/06/2025 19:10

Really sad was Jo Cox

HairyToity · 30/06/2025 19:10

For me it was Archie Lyndhurst, Nicholas Lyndhurst's son. His life was only just beginning and it was so full of promise.

mylovedoesitgood · 30/06/2025 19:11

Has to be River Phoenix. I was 17 and hadn’t read any news about his drug taking. To me he was still the clean living and gorgeous hunk from his films. Such a huge tragedy.

PopeJoan2 · 30/06/2025 19:11

Amy Winehouse - even though it seemed inevitable.

PopeJoan2 · 30/06/2025 19:12

And George Michael. I was driving home on Christmas night when it came on the radio. Was gutted.
