Just wondering who else can do their own back zips up?

I’ve never considered myself particularly flexible but I’ve realised a lot of women can’t zip up their own clothes at the back. Do I have a super power as I can do mine easily?

How many items do you own and regularly wear with a zip up the back?

MooreMooreMoore · 22/06/2025 11:04

Maybe you’ve just got gibbon arms?

alittlequinnie · 22/06/2025 11:06

I think it depends how tight the clothes are. If I can pull it out a bit and zip it up as far as I can from the bottom... then hoike it up my shoulders and go in from the top to yank it up the full way I'm good - but if it's tight I really struggle.

I sometimes tie a ribbon to it - so it works like a wetsuit zip pull cord thingy. That works well.

I can, and I can do up my shock absorber high impact sports bra. But now I’m in my 50’s I am trying to make sure I’m as flexible and strong as I can be. I’ve seen what happens to women who don’t (in my family)…

Coconutter24 · 22/06/2025 11:07

Doing up is easy, undoing not so easy for me

Somewhat81 · 22/06/2025 11:10

have you just had a discussion with “lots of women” about doing up zips at the back of clothing op?

Most days! Almost all of my dresses zip up in the back and I wear a dress practically every day. I also love dresses that have a corset style back and I can’t do that effectively for myself either. Luckily DH is always willing to help because I am one of the people that can’t reach 😂

Loads, I wear a lot of zip up jumpsuits, dresses with zip backs, blouses with half zips at the back. Why do you ask?

Don't think I've ever owned a regular item of clothing with a zip up the back. Might have had a cocktail dress but usually the zip is in the side.

LBOCS2 · 22/06/2025 11:24

I can - but I’m hypermobile 😁

Yes, I’ve had lots of comments when I’m wearing a jumpsuit about struggling to do them up after going to the loo and I’ve been watching lots of fashion reels where they keep the backs unzipped as there’s no one there to help. Why?

I can do it. Might take a bit of contortionism but I'd rather struggle for a minute than have to ask someone else!

I’m wondering if I might be a bit hypermobile, I remember having a spray tan once and the lady doing it commented on how I was rotating my wrist and elbow. Are there other things you can do that are unusual?

I struggle as I have a shoulder injury. I usually attach a large safety pin with a bit of string or ribbon to the zip and pull it up that way. I can reach behind my neck to detach it afterwards

MeOldBamboo · 22/06/2025 11:31

My aunt used to put a hanger through the zip and pull it up/down with it. Obviously didn’t continue to wear it with the hanger attached, but she was a funny woman 😁

Alltheoldpaintings · 22/06/2025 11:31

I can - also hyper mobile.

Cakeandcheeseforever · 22/06/2025 11:31

I can do up back zips as long as they’re not stiff. I do yoga which I think helps, though I could as a teenager before doing yoga too.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 22/06/2025 11:33

I can but I think I’m hypermobile so that’s probably why! I’m massively overweight but still very flexible, can touch the floor with my palms and have bendy fingers etc. I used to find it weird that other people can’t scratch their own back, put on sunscreen or do up their own clothes! But now realise maybe I’m the weird one.

It’s poor shoulder mobility. You should be able to do a zip up by easily bringing it up to between the shoulder blades, with your arms coming up from under the shoulders, and then coming from above to pull it up. For most people who can it will be down to keeping their body flexible and mobile, not hyper mobility.

Negroany · 22/06/2025 11:39

I can't, so I tend not to buy things with back zips. I think having big boobs is part of the problem because the dress can't be pulled up easily to do the bit from the top.

Yes - my knees lock ‘backwards’ when I stand straight, my elbows rotate upwards and I can get my thumbs to touch my wrists on both hands. Oh, and I can put my palms flat on the floor despite being a very sedentary, overweight 40yo!

Check out your Beighton score.

Poynsettia · 22/06/2025 11:49

I can -long arms

MadamCholetsbonnet · 22/06/2025 11:49

I can. But I’m hyper mobile…

Knittedfairies2 · 22/06/2025 11:58

I can too. I've never had any conversations with other women about whether or not they can or cannot do up a back zip.

I can do it but have EDS (hypermobile) but have to be careful that shoulders don't pop out doing it.

I can also make 'praying hands' behind my back and rotate my arm 360 degrees and put my hand flat.

Naturally sit in a W shape too
