Just wondering who else can do their own back zips up?

I’ve never considered myself particularly flexible but I’ve realised a lot of women can’t zip up their own clothes at the back. Do I have a super power as I can do mine easily?

I can too , but I suspect I'm hypermobile.

Gymnopedie · 22/06/2025 13:03

I can, but only with my left arm. (I'm right handed.)

With my left arm and hand I can also scratch an itch anywhere on my back. It's great, none of that left a bit, up a bit when someone else is doing it for you.

HelenCurlyBrown · 22/06/2025 13:10

I can’t think of anything I own that has a back zip. But I do yoga and can clasp my hands behind my back both ways, so I think I’d be ok.

Daisyvodka · 22/06/2025 13:13

I can, but i used to struggle, which I always put down to everyone struggles/big boobs.

Turns out that I was just inflexible due to being out of shape and never really stretchinb 😅 started stretching/pilates moves and going to the gym and very quickly was able to do zips when I couldn't before!

Yes - I’m an E cup. I think it really does come down to a lack of mobility and flexibility for most people.

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 22/06/2025 13:34

Almost all of my outfits have back zips. It never occurred to me that it could be a problem.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 22/06/2025 13:40

No I can’t. I’ve never been particularly flexible. I’m fairly fit and not overweight. It’s never been an actual problem.

Blobbitymacblob · 22/06/2025 13:44

I always thought asking for help with zips was an affectation, rather like needing a strong man to open jars.

BitOutOfPractice · 22/06/2025 13:45

I mostly can, except as another pp mentioned, it’s a fitted dress/jumpsuit and then I might struggle a bit. If it’s a jumpsuit and I’m going to the loo I usually ask another woman to help - it’s never been a problem and usually ends up in a nice chat. So win win.

abnerbrownsdressinggown · 22/06/2025 13:48

I can but I’m reasonably flexible/ have good shoulder mobility. I can also do my sports bras up myself with no issue.

The only thing I can’t do is a blouse with a high collar that has 3 tiny buttons with loops directly behind my neck and that is because the loops are tiny and it is a lot easier to fasten if you can see what you are doing!

tinyspiny · 22/06/2025 13:52

I can since I had both my shoulders repaired , prior to that I couldn’t put my hands behind my back at all .

Loads, I wear a lot of zip up jumpsuits, dresses with zip backs, blouses with half zips at the back. Why do you ask?

why would I ask? Because I very rarely see any clothing in shops or being worn by others with zips up the back!

i LoVE jumpsuits and have 4…. Not one with zip up at back.

So I guess that’s why I asked!

Do you have a link to any of the jumpsuits you have worn a zip up at the back? Reason I ask (before you ask!) is whilst I love my jumpsuits, they’re a pain to go to the loo in and that is with front enclosing so a zipper at the back on a jumpsuit…. I’d be terrified of urgently needing the loo!

Wibblywobblybobbly · 22/06/2025 14:35

I can. Most of my workwear has a zip at the back, including jumpsuits which obviously have to be undone every time I need a wee. No bother!

Doggymummar · 22/06/2025 14:37

Yes, really easily. I can't fasten my bra from behind tho, front fasten and swivel

JustAnInchident · 22/06/2025 14:39

I can and I suppose it’s really one of the only ‘benefits’ (I use that term loosely!) of having ehlers danlos syndrome 🙃

Do you actually want to buy a jumpsuit with a zipper in the back before I link to some? Sounds like they would t be suitable for you if you’d be terrified of needing the toilet?

Probably, because like me, she doesn't own anything (or a lot) that zips up at the back. I haven't in years.

Yes please!!

Doggymummar · 22/06/2025 18:20

Most of my jump suits have the little half zip under the arm and one is just step through. I have one from fat face with a back zip

I can. It's something you can practise. Try yoga, cowfaced pose with an arm bind. Hold onto a cloth or a flannel or your clothes to start with. After practice you will likely be able to get your fingers to touch, then eventually clasp hands.
E.g. at minute twelve of this yoga video

I can but I also think it's kept through daily practice of creaming/moisturising my back.

Doing up is easy, undoing not so easy for me

This

MargaretThursday · 22/06/2025 18:48

My mil couldn't (she had a shoulder issue) and certainly thought she was unusual in that. She said that she'd realised she had a problem in an exercise class when she was the only one who couldn't put one hand over her shoulder and one up the back and at least nearly touch. She couldn't get them anywhere near.

I think if there's someone friendly and convenient, they might ask someone to do it for them as that is easier, even if you can do it.
Normally I get up before dh, and would do up my zip without thinking about it, but if he's up, then I'll often ask him to do it.

See, I can't do back zips (I can do the half ones on low backs) but can do my bra, including sports bra.

I have a friend who does a lot of yoga, and she can't do her back zip, when she wears a jumpsuit someone has to go to the loo with her (I prefer not to wear things that needs external help!).
