I am fucking raging yes

He won't be entitled to benefits so basically, be a high rate tax payer ie someone who is a net contributor and, even when shit hits the fan you get fuck all!!! Live you whole life on benefits and get everything 😡😡

I'm so sorry to hear that @twistyizzy. That must have hit your DH so hard after a whole career there, and a huge worry for you both. Be gentle with yourselves.

It's utterly infuriating that there is the safety net doesn't apply to those who actually pay for it for others. In most European countries he would get short-term support linked to how much he had paid in previously, as I'm sure you know. That's what a functioning social contract looks like: fair to everyone and recognising those who have already contributed more - rather than exploitating them and giving nothing to them when it's their turn to need help.

But focus on yourselves for now, on getting through each day. Thinking of you.

Thank you. Yep it's finally sinking in for him that what was the point of nearly killing himself to climb the corporate ladder, not rely on the state etc only for there to be no safety net for him when he needs it.
It's going to take him a few months to process this but I'm really worried that as the job market is so shit at the moment, that it many take him longer than normal to find a new job. It certainly won't be at the level he is at now but that may not be a bad thing, fuck being a net contributer and continually told that you can + should pay more! Fuck being looked down on for being "privileged" when he is nearly killing himself working 60 hours a week +. Fuck it all, he can go and get a sub 40K job, work his 37 hours and not pay ridiculous amounts of tax anymore.

@twistyizzy my great mate was made redundant 3 months ago it’s been a blessing for him he’s really looking at his life and what he wants it to look like I’m not trying to give platitudes or make it sound ok it is shit 🥲

Hi thank you, yes I hope long term it will be for the best but obviously he can't see it at the moment.
The main problem will be his own feeling of self worth. I am going to try to get him to go to therapy to help process it but that will probably fall on deaf ears. He judges his own self worth by the status of his job, money in the bank etc.

TheNuthatch · 23/07/2025 08:58

@twistyizzy That's so sad to read. He should hold his head bloody high. He's done everything right and should be proud of himself. This kind of thing can be much harder on men imo. I really hope this is a positive sliding doors moment for him eventually.
Rant and vent on here whenever you need it. I may be a stranger on the internet, but you're in my thoughts. Flowers

Same for you @Katypp. I hope you and your dh are holding up.Flowers

Nope, not at all. Your feelings are totally justified.

Whenever a higher rate tax payers drops out of the system, everybody loses. It's just that some are too stupid to realise that.

It was lovely listening to Sir James this morning. Excellent start to my day 😁.

I have no idea who the Labour bot was on the media rounds. I muted her.

It’s a bloody loss whichever way it’s dressed up my friend worked for an engineering firm that when I was at school employed 2500 people my father was a director that has now after 65 redundancies down to 9 yes just 9 people. This government can’t run a bath and the sad thing is also the DWP has no help for qualified people there used to be but no longer. @twistyizzy may mr twisty find a better more suitable work place x

Arrearing50 · 23/07/2025 09:29

My dh is trying to shift his mindset, this article, whilst a tough read was good about different approaches to work being needed for different life stages - he won’t be there yet though @twistyizzy it’s too soon.

i agree about the net contributions - it feels like all we get from the govt is scorn.

Definitely not. It’s stressful and Labour seem to be ok with redundancies and job reduction.

It’s awful to see, especially for people on here actually feeling it Flowers

@katypphope you’re both doing ok too
