Keep us posted on what happens with your school TwoTier. As you said, imagine what's happening at schools in less affluent areas.

Labour seem determined to lose the next election. I don't think we need to fear a second term.

Have you heard about protest outside an immigration hotel where people are claiming police ran over a protestor??

Honestly the country is a tinderbox and Labour fuelling the flames. Whilst Starmer is safely abroad pimping us out to Europe.

I'm hiding on here. The anti Semitism on MN makes me feel sick!

@EasternStandard It's behind a paywall, can you share an overview?

@TheNuthatchbasically the French police are tired and losing control on the beaches, there are children too and the migrant camps are lawless. They don’t think Starmer’s deal will do anything. If it does actually happen.

“We are helpless… there is a French expression ‘donner de la tête’, we are overwhelmed and don’t know where to start, we don’t know where to go, there are so many boats leaving,” says Marc Musiol, a French border police officer in Pas-de-Calais.

Thank you. I know I need to subscribe, I'm old fashioned and still like an actual paper on my desk 😂.
Sounds awful in France. We really can't continue like this can we? Remember the photos of migrants being tear gased a few weeks ago too.

Is this Epping? That's all I can find. There was a protest on Sunday too from what I've just read. An Ethiopian man has been charged with three counts of sexual assault which seems to be the trigger.
You're right about it being a tinderbox. It's gonna get worse too imo.

Yes it's Epping. Videos on X. I don't condone any sort of violence either way but fundamentally this is about people thinking they haven't got a voice and that politicians don't care

EasternStandard · 17/07/2025 21:38

Idk why Starmer would announce people with family connections would have more chance to stay in UK and then leave it.

It’ll absolutely push people to cross so they can create a connection.

It makes me think the five EU countries upturned it last minute, but why go ahead with it?

I really feel for French police feeling overrun, locals too and just everyone really. It’s no way to run a system.

The Sun reported that the Ethiopian man in Epping had arrived by small boat and committed the 3 alleged sexual assaults within days of arrival. This is what sparked the protests.

There are too many pull factors for unknown men from all over to come to the UK.
The economy is screwed because of the associated welfare bill, as well as the social and cultural price. Then more pressure on housing , water, power , infrastructure.
Middle and higher earners face ever rising taxes, many cut their hours because of tax cliff edges , and young people can’t get on the career ladder because of the jobs taxes and now also AI.
Where does it end?

Where does it end?

Probably with a Reform government if things continue as they are.

'He seems more focused on obedience than legitimacy'

Accurate. I agree with the bit about the MPs being like canaries in a coal mine too. Starmer is too arrogant to see that though. He couldn't possibly be at fault.

Yes agree on both, canaries in coal mine is very apt.

i do think we’re watching the last days of Reeves and Starmer - leaders are supposed to inspire support in a democracy, a weak dictator rests on authority. Blair understood this…

Arrearing50 · 18/07/2025 08:40

It’s very clear that we need to try new ideas from experts - because, we’re going to get reform in and then it’ll be carnage. But the more people not bought into and benefitting from the current system….

Let's hope! The damage they've caused in 1 year is shocking

Arrearing50 · 18/07/2025 08:42

Fingers crossed! Agree, wreckage. Completely the opposite of where we need to go.

Maybe. Although their self assurance is incredibly high.

Arrogant and clueless could stick them there a while longer.

Hard to say though

Arrearing50 · 18/07/2025 08:43

And not surprised to see Maskell on the article photo - think that will be viewed as a strategic blunder. The three new ones, possibly could’ve got away with.

Arrearing50 · 18/07/2025 08:44

It may depend on if the economy miraculously upticks, whether they hold on.

I dont see any signs of that. The Jaguar Land Rover job losses (after Starmer boasted about saving their jobs) are a sign of things to come imo. Labour policies are having the opposite effect, but they're totally blind to it.
Agree about Maskell, Starmer will come to regret that one. Perhaps he's trying to protect himself from a leadership challenge.

No, agree - my firm is going to do redundancies before year end too. Can’t see where the magic is coming from - interest rates giving people with mortgages more money!

I hope you'll be safe from the redundancies. Horrible to have that on the horizon. We also had to reduce staff, but luckily it happened organically so less heartache.

Ha, yes a cut in interest rates really is the only thing to look forward to. Shame it's only happening because of a contracting jobs market and falling wages. Reeves will boast about it anyway no doubt. What a mess they are.
