HA! This took me back… I had just finished packing off a massive debt. Every penny. I had similar amount. I got a brown LEATHER tote bag, I had dreamed about just such a bag since I worked for an Italian lady in my teens and finally I had one too! I also bought a scarf to tie around the strap and entertained ridiculous fantasies that I looked chic and cool and would one day go on a day trip to Paris on Eurotunnel with my uber chic bag!
well, reality came knocking… my mother fell, I needed money for an emergency train ticket home which I put on my credit card and I had to return my beautiful gifts to the shop for the refund to pay for it.
Oh well, a girl can dream.
Never did make it to Paris either

I've recently turned 50 but my pressy budget was nowhere near £300.
If it had been I would have liked a day trip to a nice seaside town with an overnight stay at a hotel (all by myself 😂).

EBearhug · 26/05/2025 01:12

A piece of art.

tinyspiny · 26/05/2025 01:14

My 50th was a day I’d rather forget as I had an emergency venesection and collapsed during the procedure . When I arrived home in the evening , feeling like shit I was given , among other things a PS4 , which I had absolutely no desire to own .

Ihitthetarget · 26/05/2025 01:15

Not sure I should spend £500 really, but dp is saying I've not asked for anything specific so he can't really buy anything, my parents aren't able to get me anything, and dc are too small still (hopefully something home made). So decided I will get myself something nice at least!

Replacement engagement ring - has lost the stone from the original, and the setting was too fragile to hold a replacement sapphire...was more than £300 though, but less than a week's salary, let alone the 3 months I have heard bandied about by diamond sellers. (The original was about £80 which was an awful lot for a student 30 odd years ago)

Loveatortie · 26/05/2025 01:22

Bugger all, same as i got for my 40th and 60th.

That sounds rubbish. I hope you're much better and have gone on to have much better birthdays.

I have another 5 months to decide but we are also going on a Med Cruise when I am 50 + 3 days. DH will be 50 3 months after me, so that might be it apart from token gifts.

NeedToAskPlease · 26/05/2025 01:29

Why are you not feeling too good about turning 50?

Noshadelamp · 26/05/2025 01:30

I had a lovely day out in a favourite town worn my husband and young adult dcs. My DH bought me a beautiful ring and perfume, my dcs bought me my favourite types of things.

Why does your dp need you to ask for something specific? How long have you been together?

A gift doesn't have to be something you know you want, it's nice to have surprises.

If he's not confident perhaps suggest a small budget of £50 for his present to you and keep the receipt, then get yourself something with the rest.
Can he help the DCs to either shop or make you something?

rubbishtv · 26/05/2025 01:32

I cannot remember presents but had a lovely day in London with husband and children. It’s the memories that count IMHO.

Noshadelamp · 26/05/2025 01:32

The other thing I meant to say is that when I turned 50 I saw it as "starting again" - something about that zero that meant I was suddenly younger and at the beginning again. Felt surprisingly empowering!

I have thanks and I hope you have a great day , why are you not feeling good about it @Ihitthetarget ? I have very generous children and family , it was unfortunate that my 50th year was a crap one health wise and I ended up diagnosed with 3 chronic conditions . It’s my 60th next year and I have plans 😀

Pringlebeak · 26/05/2025 11:39

We were supposed to be going abroad but it was lockdown so I bought myself a Nintendo Switch and a copy of Animal Crossing instead. 😅

TeenLifeMum · 26/05/2025 11:45

We’re financially comfortable so generally, if I want something I’ll buy it. It makes gifts hard but I love day trips, theatre, weekends away. This year dh and I walked the dogs then had a pub lunch in a dog friendly pub, went home and saw dc after school, the headed to centre parcs for the twilight spa 4-9pm. It was lovely.

For my 40th I got a framed limited edition print from an artist I love and dh took me to Paris for a weekend to see lady Gaga. 50th will be some kind of trip and maybe a piece of jewellery.

I bought myself a huge petrol lawnmower that self propels. It was awesome mowed the enormous garden in less than an hour rather than the entire day it used to take.

this year I’m after a bird box with a camera in it ……

BingoBling · 26/05/2025 11:47

A spa visit.
A day out to the theatre.

BingoBling · 26/05/2025 11:48

A bird box with a camera sounds a fab idea also as pp suggests.

Mary46 · 26/05/2025 12:09

Happy Birthday op. We went to Tenerife really nice some winter sun as Im January. Hope you have a nice day.

Numbersarefun · 26/05/2025 12:13

I got some lovely new watercolour paints and we went for a week to a cottage with lots of family. Xxxx

Bonjovispyjamas · 26/05/2025 12:16

Loads of booze, my friends know me too well 🤣

CancelTheSkip · 26/05/2025 12:16

A skydive!

Note to self - never have a few drinks watching I'm a Celeb and say to OH "ooh, that looks fun!"

It was bloody amazing 😎

Yellowlab34 · 26/05/2025 12:23

I had a boozy dinner with my female friends which was a total blast, and far less boozy lunch with my DDs, where they paid, even though they were still both in school.

No significant other, siblings or parents, so no one to give me a cruise or amazing piece of jewellery as a present. I did ask friends to give me a book they really liked, as I knew they would want to get presents, but I didn't want anything expensive, and a book sets a price ceiling. A couple broke the rule and I got beautiful flowers and champagne too.

I had a great time - sitting in work smiling at the memories now!

I usually buy myself a present too, a book, chocolate or (actually probably more an 'and' rather than 'or') a bottle of gin.

If I was buying myself a present with a bigger budget, I think I'd go jewellery.
