Turning 50 shortly - not feeling great about it to be honest.

what would you buy yourself with a budget of up to about £300??

I spent more than your budget on a beautiful ring, did the same for my 40th. I do have a DH, and I think he bought me an expensive cabin-sized suitcase.

I like treating myself to jewellery every few years.

While turning 50 can be depressing, being 50 isn't that bad.

You know it's just a number, a random date, but I know I've always felt quite reflective at the big birthdays, and at 50 I felt that I had got stuck in a life I wouldn't necessarily have picked. It's not a bad life, and I love my children, and can't work out how to have lived a different life but still got the same ones.

But we don't get a do over, so we all end up accepting it - well except for the likes of Boris Johnson who like to have 're-sets' and start the whole parenting thing again from scratch with younger woman.

Went to see Abba Voyage with my whole family. Had an absolute blast

For my 50th my oldest friend bought me a Hermes scarf. Totally unnecessary of course and not something I ever expressed an interest in owning but it’s one of most treasured possessions.

For DH’s 50th I took him to New York for 5 days without the offspring (who was cared for by the above oldest friend).

I'm 60 in a few weeks so 50 seems a long time ago.

I don't remember any specific presents. I did take my son who was 11 that year on a dream holiday to Morocco and because we had so few photos of us together I spent a small fortune on a studio photo shoot.
My mum always gives me £30 for my birthday which I usually spend at the Garden Show.

If I was going to spend £300 on myself on a big birthday I'd get a piece of jewellery
Happy Birthday, 50 is really just another number, I've quite enjoyed my 50s

EveryKneeShallBow · 26/05/2025 13:36

I don’t remember, but if I was spending on myself I’d go for a lovely meal and overnight in a good hotel, or tickets to a show that I wouldn’t otherwise get to see.

frozendaisy · 26/05/2025 13:56

I got a (very nice) portable painting easel. But that might be a bit niche.

PermanentTemporary · 26/05/2025 14:02

For my 50th I invited a bunch of friends to a picnic on a hillside involving a beautiful walk, then some of us went to dinner and I paid.

If I were just going to buy a single thing, it would either be this champagne, which if you like champagne anyway is like being kissed by an angel - don't bother if champagne isn't your thing, obviously.

Or a silver bangle. I got one as a gift from said group of friends from a local jeweller and I wear it at least a couple of times a week (not allowed to wear jewellery at work or I would wear it most days).

I have just turned 50 and had some lovely gifts. I asked for vouchers for a luxury hotel chain (actually got 2 so that was great), my friends clubbed together and bought me a designer bag which I was not expecting but absolutely love it. I also asked for vouchers for a couple of experiences that I wanted to do, and I got a very special scarf that I had always wanted. I think helping to decide whether you’d like an experience or a thing might be helpful? But I definitely decided I wanted an indulgence (the scarf) rather than just getting something practical. I know it’s a cliche but try and enjoy being 50. Some people don’t get to.

I went on a balloon ride on my 50th, it was amazing! Also (not the same day 😀) went to see one of my favourite rock bands, Rammstein.

Unbeleevable · 26/05/2025 14:10

I was ten when my mum turned 50 and I made her a huge number 50 out of cardboard and painted it silver! Poor mum, she put up with a lot.

When I turned 40 I spent it on going vegan and visiting Amsterdam with my best friend. It was fantastic.

I’m no longer vegan, but age 50 later this year - I’m going to upgrade my gym membership and hopefully visit Jekkas herb farm (been hinting to dh for about 20 years so just going to take myself off there!)

Bugger all, same as i got for my 40th and 60th.

You got the same as me then.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/05/2025 14:14

The Prime Minister gave me a circuit breaker lockdown.

DH gave me a Dryrobe.

I had a balloon flight on my 50th too, and it was thrilling, but scary. We landed in a hedge! 60th was seeing Joseph the musical , 70th was Les Miserables. All from my children- wondering what’ll happen on my 80th, in two years time!

We landed on the first tee of a golf course after just missing the club house roof by about 6 feet 😁.

Not trying to be a pain in the arse but I have a cancer with a very poor prognosis and if I’m still here when I turn 50 next year I’ll be very happy.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 26/05/2025 14:34

@Loveatortie @ChompandaGrazia

Yup. Same here too.

So sorry. That is shitty and really puts things into perspective for a lot of us. I hope you will make it through and that you'll have a happy 50th x

Becs258 · 26/05/2025 14:48

Mine is later this year and my husband has very kindly bought me flights for a solo trip to Copenhagen. Managed to book a hotel with our Clubcard vouchers, and my parents are going to give me some money towards meals and sightseeing. Definitely softening the blow of turning 50.

Pennyplant19 · 26/05/2025 15:05

My husband paid for the transport for an elderly rescue dog I’d seen in Europe. Best gift ever, she saw her twilight years out with us - we loved her to bits ❤️

Railingsst · 26/05/2025 15:20

I still love the power mower the best! 😍

CarpetKnees · 26/05/2025 15:55

Don't remember any specific presents.
Do remember getting everyone together to have a party.

I would choose spending time with people over any 'thing' / object for any birthday.

Strollingby · 26/05/2025 16:01

One family member gave me (and DH) tickets to a Henry Vlll type banquet. We were sceptical but had a great evening.
Friend gave me a red letter day and I went on a knife skills course. With a higher budget I might have gone hit air ballooning or on a track day. There weren't any "things" that I wanted so experiences worked well.

Cynic17 · 26/05/2025 16:02

Can't remember, too long ago! But if I had £300 to spend on myself, I wouldn't buy "stuff".
I'd top up the £300, as necessary, & book a train ticket to London, a ticket to a play/show, and a night in a hotel. Just for me - perfect!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 26/05/2025 16:09

DH paid for me to have a 4 night trip to NYC with a friend - he hates travel and had no desire to go himself.
