I’ve a friend who is a Catholic priest, he reckons there will be married priests before the Catholic Church gets anywhere near accepting women priests. He says the Church has uttterly backed itself into a corner over it all.
In fact he has a lot to say about the church and not all flattering. He will never be Pope if he keeps that up …as I keep telling him. 😂

Yes, the Catholic Church has quietly ordained married priests for some time; they would be converts from Anglicanism or some other denomination who were already married and ordained in a different denomination. I also think that some of the Eastern rite churches that are in communion with Rome allow priests to be married.

Article about why the survivors of sexual abuse are wary of the new pope.

It'll be interesting when they run out of followers, bet they'll accept women then. Desperate times call for desperate measures...

I'm an atheist, so why I'm bothered I've no idea! But I'm quite disappointed it's an American at this moment in time.

Somehow Trump will make it all about him, they chose an American Pope because everyone could see how awesome Trump was and how awesome America is and how much everyone loves America because of the deals and what Trump is doing and they wanted that in the Vatican continue Trump style egotistical waffle ad finitum

" he’s still apparently opposed to women in the Catholic Church."

Prevost was involved with Francis in giving 3 women a role in the selection of bishops, which was criticised by more conservative clergy.

There are gradations of opinion in these areas.

Prevost is a moderate.

Yes, agree he is a moderate - I appreciate my post didn't really make it clear that I was agreeing with that. I was just pointing out that he disagrees with women being ordained, unlike some of the more progressive cardinals, because obviously moderate candidates may have varying views in differing areas.

Completely agree that his position is more moderate than many of the more conservative cardinals. There's been plenty of outrage on Twitter already about another "woke" pope being elected 🙄

I was feeling quite hopeful reading about his activities in the past, but the information posted by @Puzzledandpissedoff about his role in covering up abuse feels really disappointing. Even if it's been exaggerated, is there really no cardinals suitable to be pope that don't have a problematic past? 😕

They already have married priests - converted Anglicans, but still.

I assume Lavender Mafia is an allegation that he’s less hostile to same sex relationships than some. But I don’t know his position on that.

Disappointing to read that this one's also been implicated in the hiding of abuse against minors - though given the Vatican's obsessive secrecy it's hard to avoid wondering how easy it would have been to find someone who wasn't

https://www.pillarcatholic.com/p/why-prevosts-papal-prospects-prompt

I think that, given human nature and the widespread issue with sexual abuse in the church, it would be extremely difficult to find a bishop or cardinal who had not had some sort of oversight, perhaps tangential, of a priest or church employee of some sort, who had misbehaved in this way, in the previous several decades.

I also think it is very difficult to manage these matters in such a way that the victims would feel satisfied.

And, very often, the complaints that hit the media necessarily give one perspective of what happened.

Hopefully, the cardinals will have had access to detailed reports about these matters, prior to the appointment.

But if it appears that there has been gross mishandling, then I imagine we will hear more in the media.

DrPrunesqualer · 08/05/2025 19:59

A good choice I think
Young ( for a Pope ),moderate and a missionary. He’s spent most of his life living amongst those he cares for in poverty.

The choice of Leo i like too. It reminds me of portraits of the Last Pope Leo on my Grandads wall.

I would have preferred an African as Catholicism is increasing there so it would have been good for many of our new followers but unfortunately most of the potential candidates were far too Conservative.

Wish I was in St Peter’s Square, kicking myself now for not jumping on a plane !

In fairness, Trump spins everything to make it about him regardless of outcome. The man is a walking talkin ego.

Catholic Mumsnetters! I have a question!
my grandma is a very devoted catholic and she has always been very strict in her bereavement - only wore black, no music, no entertainment for at least a month after the passing of a close family member. Is this the done thing, or just something she’s observed? As with that in mind, does it look a little insensitive to Benedict to congregate and celebrate in such excitable manner? Genuine question by the way as I’m curious!

We're Irish, we have music and celebration straight after the burial.

RitaIncognita · 08/05/2025 19:59

The longest papal conclave took almost three years; it began in 1268 and eventually resulted in the election of Pope Gregory X. Before crowning him Pope, they had to quickly ordain him to the priesthood and consecrate him as a bishop.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 08/05/2025 19:23

Yeah, was fast. I have known times when it's been 2-3 weeks.

Odd timing announcing it on the 80th anniversary of VE Day though. They could have waited til tomorrow! 😬

Also, I don't understand this 'why not a female Pope?' thing. Why don't we have male nuns? We just don't. I don't want a female Pope! I am liking Pope Leo XIV so far. He has a kind face. Smile

How old are you then? The last conclave that took 2 weeks was over 200 years ago.

Imdoodleladie · 08/05/2025 20:00

Never liked Francis tbh. Caused havoc within the Church. Before he became his popeliness he was often complained about by past staff. You could say he lacked tact and people felt almost bullied by him. I should imagine his new popeliness will be middle of the road. Tradtional with a Francis twist. Only time will tell..

LBFseBrom · 08/05/2025 20:01

An American! That's a first. I hope he challenges the orange man.

NoisyLemonDog · 08/05/2025 20:03

An American with one billion followers. I wonder what Trump will make of that.

IcedPurple · 08/05/2025 20:04

LlynTegid · 08/05/2025 19:18

I think of him as an American born Peruvian, and hope he can continue the social teaching of Pope Francis.

And if he really has been prepared to argue with JD Vance, that's a good thing.

The Catholic church has been losing followers to Evangelical Protestantism throughout Latin America over the past few decades. 1 in 5 Latin Americans now describes themselves as Protestant, up from tiny numbers not so long ago.

I wonder if that has anything to do with the election of two popes with a strong connection to South America?

He seems quite traditional on this score, not keen on alternative family set ups (at least in the quotes from 10 years ago)

Irish here too and I can’t imagine a wake without alcohol and a knees up.

Catholics love partying, colour, music. Ass7me you’ve seen the inside of a Catholic Church….ablaze with sparkle and colour. It was the hardline Protestants ( Puritans, Calvinist’s etc ) that put a stop to all the fun stuff.
No idea why some Catholics would do differently but I’m guessing different countries might do things differently

SpidersAreShitheads · 08/05/2025 19:42

Are you talking about the conclave taking 2-3 weeks?

Because they definitely don't. Since 1914, there's only been one vote that took 5 days, the rest were shorter. Since 1963, they've all been three days or less. No conclave has taken 2-3 weeks to decide.

Apologies if I've misunderstood your post.

No you haven't misunderstood me. Smile And you're right - and so are a couple of others who responded to me. (incl @fgwcam ...) I think I have some false memories, as I recall popes taking 2-3 weeks to be announced when I was a child/teen. Seems it was only a few days. Sorry. Blush

Hahaha! I'm glad it's not just me that does things like this 😂 I have a terrible perception of time. I did also have to double-check in case I had got it wrong 😂

Maybe as a child/teen you had zero interest so it probably seemed to stretch on interminably 😂

Yes he’s not a politician.

He’s a head of state, so in one way, he is a politician
