He held my hand!

My little boy has profound disabilities. He functions well below his chronological age in all areas, is pre-verbal, he smiles at my voice but not if I smile as he's registered blind. Today, at the age of five (almost) and for the first time ever, he held my hand! His grasp reflex has always been absent due to cerebral palsy and his hands are usually tightly fisted with his thumb tucked in but more and more just lately he's been opening his hands and trying to explore things. Just now I opened his hand to clean his palm and he gripped my hand. Tightly. It was such a moment I took a photo to show his therapists and teachers.

Oh @Seawolves how amazing 🥰 as a parent of 2 DC that also have extra challenges I refuse to say parenting is harder as frankly ALL parenting is hard, it's just maybe harder in a different way.

However I do say that parenting DC with extra challenges comes with the bonus that we get to celebrate so many more milestones and what a beautiful one you are now celebrating 🍾 ❤️

Of course all parents celebrate the typical milestones but I think as a parent of DC who face extra challenges you are hyper aware of tiny achievements that parents with DC that don't face extra challenges don't necessarily notice or feel the need to make a huge deal of so whilst it may be harder in a different way what a lovely flipside when you do get to celebrate these incredibly special moments.

I have sat in the bathroom and had a private (happy) cry several times at things my DC have achieved and when I emerge after washing my face and composing myself, I shout from the rooftops about, only to get met with blank looks as to why I'm making it such a big deal lol

Without being negative, given your post was yesterday I sincerely hope you are still in your happy bubble and remain there for quite sometime, when it does eventually pop as the reality of your DCs extra challenges come back into focus (daily life takes over for us all at some point). I urge you to bottle this feeling now and call on it when you need it and remember that you WILL get more bubbles and you WILL get to celebrate more achievements you didn't dare to think would happen.

I'm over the moon for you as I honestly get how special this has been and I'm raising my cup of tea (secretly wishing it was wine, it's been a day...lol) and cheering for you and your DC x
