What would be your /Dream Meal/ Last Meal on Earth…

I have just started listening to the ‘Off Menu’ podcast hosted by Ed Gamble and James Acaster. The slebs being interviewed describe their ideal three course meal with a side dish, still sparkling water and beverage of choice. They give background to why the dishes are their fave / where ate them, and sometimes where they would like to eat it.
There are some hilarious combinations -including from top chefs -think beans and salad cream on toast for a starter and wildfire pizza for main, with a bowl of cornflakes on the side and a Berni Inn knickerbocker glory for pud !!
Some of the meals don’t flow in the way a restaurant menu would making it even more quirky.
It’s great and got me thinking what mine would be, plus when, where and with whom I’d share the meal.

Mine would be :

Starter: Gottta be a 70s prawn cocktail in a glass with vivid pink seafood sauce and iceberg lettuce.

Main: Roast Lamb with mint sauce and redcurrant with creamy potato gratin and buttered carrots and peas and sounded red cabbage - loads lamb gravey

Side - A large four cheese, cauliflower cheese

Pud: Vietnamese Mango and coconut rice pudding - from the Morning Glory restaurant in Hoi Ann- or warm Bakewell tart - from Bakewell - with clotted cream

Water: Sparkling with ice.

Beverage: A good red wine - Primitivo maybe

Location: A Scandinavian log cabin with a snow topped mountain frozen lake backdrop.

Lunch or dinner: Deffo dinner. I will
just have been in the wood fired sauna and a cold plunge int the lake. Now in front of log fire ready to feast.

With whom: DH.

What about you guys??

I'd be happy with pizza, but if I was pushing the boat out some giant prawns, sitting at a table and chairs on a sandy beach. When I turned 30 I went to India and had such a meal on a beach in Palolem, the sand under my bare feet was heaven.

That sounds absolutely amazing! Bring on the giant prawns! X

To begin: Half a dozen oysters with mignonette
Main Course: Steak from my butcher with Béarnaise sauce, baguette and rocket salad.
Then: Cheese, crackers and chutney (sorry not sorry to James Acaster, but it's the 💣)

Yes he’s partial to a pud isn’t he, gets besides himself lol at the very suggestion of cheese n b’s as an alternative!
You can have both tho
pud and a cheese course if you like!!

Before mj; starter and main, seafood platter via the white horse brancaster staithe. Fresh bread , sparkling white wine, sparkling water ice and lime.
Pudding, Panna cotta, fresh raspberry coulis.
On mj, just the water😞

Same here when I was - 1 slice of brown toast and a thin sliced tomato with a bit of olive oil alongside the water (sparkling of course!)
but this is fantasy land lol
good luck with the mj - worth it in the end xx

Nachos with mature cheddar, fresh salsa, chunky guacamole, an unimaginable amount of jalapeños and fresh coriander and only a little bit of sour cream.
2 perfect fried eggs with chips and bread and butter.
Baked vanilla cheesecake with a really thin base.
Bottomless margaritas.
A nice cup of tea.
A really strong flat white and a pain au raisin.

Omg this is my fave topic I drive the kids bonkers with it regularly - what’s yer death row meal?

starters for me will always be a lobster. I don’t care if that doesn’t count as a starter. I’m on death row.

main is rib eye steak, creamed spinach, mash, gravy, garlic mushrooms and grilled tomatoes

pudding is a whole cheese board followed by sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream

if we’re doing booze then a bottle of white, a bottle of red and a bottle of brandy 😆😆

So the brandy and wine are for the starter- but what about the main lol?

Starter - tempura seafood and veg with a tartare sauce dip
Main - surf and turf with Wagyu steak (med rare) and a tuna steak served with salt and pepper skin on fries, onion rings and some kind of salads. Probably a crisp green salad with pomegranate seeds.
Dessert - Rhubarb crumble with custard and vanilla ice-cream, making sure there is lots of rhubarb with just the right tanginess.

Sparkling water with lots of ice, lemon and lime drunk through a glass straw.

I'd start with a Caipirinha cocktail and then move on to Champagne. Finish on an Irish coffee.

Location would be overlooking lakes and mountains somewhere. Not really bothered about where as long as I'm warm.

Is wagu as lovely as they say ? Looks beautiful as a raw meat

Freshly caught squid cooked over coals with lime juice and fresh chilli.

(The ones I used to have on the beach when I lived in Vietnam, they were caught at night on round boats that used lights to lure the squid, then brought them to shore at dawn).

Steak, rare, cooked in butter and herbs. With chips and a big pile of green beans.

Maybe some garlic bread as well.

The lemon meringue roulade I had in a local Italian restaurant before I became dairy intolerant.

With sparkling water, lots of champagne, coffee with handmade chocolates, baileys to finish.

Location, maybe that Vietnamese beach at sunset, or my local Italian restaurant in the winter, by the fire.

Just told DH to add to the farm shop sausage list along with the homemade pork pie mentioned upthread, to give it a whirl

Starter would be nachos with really flavoursome salsa and guac, sour cream, plenty of cheese and a bit of chilli con carne.

main would be fish and chips with perfectly crisp golden batter and plenty of salt and vinegar on my chips and some tartare sauce.

side would be some giant prawns and squid cooked in a garlic chilli butter.

dessert would be a thick chocolate mousse with a dollop of whipped cream and some raspberries on top.

drink would be a spiced rum and coke and an amaretto sour cocktail. after the meal I’d have a chai latte.

i’d have a jug of still water with a slice of lemon.

location would be in my garden on a warm summer evening when it’s getting dark and there are lots of fairy lights and candles.

The traditional round loose balls milling about in fabulous abundance, or the new revamped version of the shiny paper wrapped chocolate bites with then biscuit bits in ?
I‘m for the former hands down !

My kids grew up on pan Catalan for breakfast and would still probably go for it over a full English in the morning- so long as they could have a side of churros and chocolate!

Just asked DH for his final verdict - was a discussion over lunch and he’s only just locked in his decision.

Sourdough bread with olive oil and balsamic.

Still Tap water -no ice or slice, room temp

Turkish meze platter with kebab, sliced kabanos sausage, filo feta parcels, pita and all the dips -baba ghanoush/hunnous etc

Toad in the hole with Lincolnshire sausage, my roast pots and his nans onion gravey, and carrot/swede mash, parsnips n peas,

Huge bowl of cauliflower n broccoli cheese with bacon and a breadcrumb topping

or

fish n chips, curry sauce, mushy peas and a pickled egg

saveloy on the side and cheap white buttered bread troll.
From Aldeborough in Suffolk where he grew up.

His Nans home made spotted dick and hot custard with a jug of cold evaporated milk on the side or a wedding cake.

Ghost ship ale and full fat coke

He’s still mulling over the starter.
I think he would swap out the meze for fish n chips if I’m honest but just doesn’t want to say.,,,

Beautiful simplicity on that menu - where have you had the best lasagne ever I wonder ?

Mine was an Italian heritage boyfriends’ Nona when I was about 21. It was perfection on a plate.

Hah, the greatest lasagne I've ever eaten was at a friends Nona in Italy last year, it was incredible.

Starter: Tortellini in Brodo, crusty white bread and butter and a piece of Nonna Fasano lasagne

Main: Friend of mine makes the most incredible roast lamb with preserved lemon stuffing so it would be that with my own mashed potato and British asparagus,
unless she's too heart broken by my imminent death 😁to cook then it would be a Roast Beef dinner (preferably cooked by my dad but I hope he would also be heartbroken about the imminent death!) with ALL the side, from his goose fat roast pots, yorkies, cauliflower cheese, parsnips...the lot

Dessert: Banoffee pie...proper banoffee pie, I don't want banana FLAVOURED anything...fresh bananas and thick caramel please! And a snickers bar

I would also like a bag of my favourite Lime and Pepper crisps.

Drinks: Vintage Veuve rose (wanker 😁), Ice Cole water a Diet coke and a cup of tea

2024riot · 05/05/2025 21:38

I think I might use these as inspiration for next Christmas when I am on my own

I think I heard Angela Harnet talking about that tortellini dish on another podcast - sounds beautiful!

I’m a lamb fan, but your dad’s roast sounds like the guv’nor.

Crikey - can’t think of anything worse than a n artificially flavoured banoffee pie so I’m with you there sister! and loving the snickers chaser( I think I’d go mars bar but in same ball park)

On the crisps front can’t agree lol - that particular flavour while delectable makes my mouth tingle in an odd way!
