What would be your /Dream Meal/ Last Meal on Earth…

Limprichteabiscuit · 05/05/2025 11:50

I have just started listening to the ‘Off Menu’ podcast hosted by Ed Gamble and James Acaster. The slebs being interviewed describe their ideal three course meal with a side dish, still sparkling water and beverage of choice. They give background to why the dishes are their fave / where ate them, and sometimes where they would like to eat it.
There are some hilarious combinations -including from top chefs -think beans and salad cream on toast for a starter and wildfire pizza for main, with a bowl of cornflakes on the side and a Berni Inn knickerbocker glory for pud !!
Some of the meals don’t flow in the way a restaurant menu would making it even more quirky.
It’s great and got me thinking what mine would be, plus when, where and with whom I’d share the meal.

Mine would be :

Starter: Gottta be a 70s prawn cocktail in a glass with vivid pink seafood sauce and iceberg lettuce.

Main: Roast Lamb with mint sauce and redcurrant with creamy potato gratin and buttered carrots and peas and sounded red cabbage - loads lamb gravey

Side - A large four cheese, cauliflower cheese

Pud: Vietnamese Mango and coconut rice pudding - from the Morning Glory restaurant in Hoi Ann- or warm Bakewell tart - from Bakewell - with clotted cream

Water: Sparkling with ice.

Beverage: A good red wine - Primitivo maybe

Location: A Scandinavian log cabin with a snow topped mountain frozen lake backdrop.

Lunch or dinner: Deffo dinner. I will
just have been in the wood fired sauna and a cold plunge int the lake. Now in front of log fire ready to feast.

With whom: DH.

What about you guys??

Ha! I thought I was being original but can see this has been to death on here lol!!!!

Mine would be :

Starter: crispy salt and pepper chicken wings

Main: This is a variant on a dish I had at a Michelin starred Indian restaurant- tikka lamb rump steaks served with Cumin potatoes and a light vegetable curry, with a mini "Indian shepherd's pie' also served

Side - I'm cheating here and having roti and onion bhajis

Pud: I don't eat a lot of puddings and I'm not very imaginative about them so something like a perfect chocolate fondant with honeycomb ice cream, with honeycomb shards and some chocolate dipped strawberries.

Water: Sparkling. Very cold but no ice

Beverage: A lovely, cold white wine. A Chablis probably

Location: Hmmmmmmm not sure about this one! Somewhere intimate.

Lunch or dinner: Dinner

With whom: DH and DD (although she wouldn't eat most of it!)

The courses definitely don't flow together but all very delicious!

My husband would take your whole menu (minus the red cabbage!), with the Bakewell tart for dessert, very happily!!

BobbyBiscuits · 05/05/2025 13:19

I love threads like this!

I'd say a whole steamed lobster, and half a dozen giant Madagascan prawns. Loads of garlic and herb butter.

A big pile of crispy salty chips

A lovely mixed salad with lots of different greens, red onions but no tomato and a light french dressing.

I don't even know the brand names of posh champagne, but a couple bottles of that please!

Pudding...hmmm...something like creme brulee. Or a greek pudding/cake made with custard, cream and pistachios. Ekmek something?

Maybe a few french and Italian cheeses with fresh crusty bread.

That'll do me I think. Oh, and a nice glass of posh brandy at the end! 😍 X

Starter: a delicious seafood / fish selection including scallops, prawns, lobster, smoked salmon.

Main: something like a simple, classic French dish with duck breast, creamy potatoes of some kind and beautifully cooked veg.

dessert: crème brûlée.

side: bag of quavers?!? 😂

drink: glass of French champagne with the seafood, a really good Pinot noir with the main.

Location: somewhere cosy. I'm thinking a cosy. Restaurant looking out at a snowy landscape.

with Dwife of course!

Just in a walk with DGC’s can’t wait to read these and dissect!!!!

Starter: either a creamy new England clam chowder with crusty bread and thick salted butter or a seafood boil with prawns, lobster, garlic butter and cajun spice

Main: a simple fillet steak cooked medium rare, Italian style parmentier potatoes and a decadent Diane sauce with lots of mushrooms and brandy.

Desert: key lime pie with fresh whipped cream

Beverage: sparking water with blackcurrant and cold champagne

Location: somewhere light bright and airy, and quiet - I hate eating in crowded dark or loud places

Honestly preferable to eat alone but if Company is required then definitely my husband

Your main sounds exquisite - I shall
be googling those dishes and getting some ideas - the Indian shep pie sounds inspired!

Your husband clearly has an excellent palette lol!!

Absolute Yummers - I may have to swap my Berni Inn prawn cocktail rooted in nostalgia with yours which sounds fabulous!

I too love salty chips n salad with crusty bread! X

I'm ignoring my gluten and dairy intolerances for this, as if it's to be my last meal, I wouldn't be around to deal with the consequences!

I keep thinking of all kinds of fancy dishes, but actually I can't think of anything I'd enjoy more than:

Garlic wild mushrooms on buttered sourdough toast
Lasagne with a crisp green salad
Vanilla and cardamom panna cotta with caramelised oranges

To drink - Taittinger champagne

YourWinter · 05/05/2025 15:57

My late mother’s shepherd’s pie, made with cold roast lamb put through the Spong mincer clamped to the scullery bench. Lots of Worcester sauce.

My friend’s sublime banoffee pie.

Baileys in coffee.

Joystir59 · 05/05/2025 15:58

Greek salad with fries.

Beautiful simplicity on that menu - where have you had the best lasagne ever I wonder ?

Mine was an Italian heritage boyfriends’ Nona when I was about 21. It was perfection on a plate.

I've made some pretty good ones myself. MIL, though a somewhat variable (and occasionally downright eccentric) cook, makes a damn fine lasagne.

The dessert isn't a combo I've actually had btw - it's a mixture of some of my favourite flavours!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 05/05/2025 16:05

Ooh and I might have some amaretti biscuits on the side!

Snackpocket · 05/05/2025 16:06

You’ve missed out poppadoms or bread!

Mine is -
Water - Still
Bread - Warm crusty bread with proper salty butter
Starter - A whole burrata with gorgeous sun ripened tomatoes and avocado drizzled in olive oil.
Main - Slow and low barbecue brisket and Jacob’s ladder beef ribs with triple cooked chips and coleslaw.
Side - Extra cheesy macaroni cheese
Dessert - Sticky toffee pudding and clotted cream
Drink - Classic margarita

Bimblebombles · 05/05/2025 16:06

Starter: Calamari - the type that has the really light crispy (barely there) batter, with the tentacles, sprinkled with salt and chilli flakes. A soy dipping sauce and also pot of lemon mayo to alternate between.

Main: Chopped salad from The Cheesecake Factory in America with some fried chicken on top.

Side: Curly fries

Sparkling water

Dessert: Cheese board - a ripe goats cheese with a rind, Dolcellate, some pears drizzled with honey and a couple of crackers.

Drink: A coffee

My son would say my Shepard’s pie I think also.
I think he’d say it was his childhood in a nutshell.
Baileys coffee - delicious I need to add that to the list - coffee or tea course also !

Well it sounds bloody divine!
I don’t mind my lasagne either tbf but I find it’s either too wet or too dry lol - and different every time !

My DH makes a chicken mushroom and spinach one which also lovely !

This is making me very hungry
I think I'll go prawn cocktail too, or maybe some sticky deep fried cauliflower I had recently.
I could do one of these menus every few months and it would change
Main: can I have some more starters ? As a veggie I find there are far more nice veggie starters like garlic mushroom and hot rosemary bread with butter, halloumi with honey or watermelon
Or maybe my friend's veggie lasagne
Dessert : tiramisu
Drink : a good Italian red
Water: sparkling with lime
Bread to be free flowing but not bloat me
