What do people have instead of sky?

Just that really.

Have had sky for years and years, don't watch it and have wanted to get rid of it for ages... but, what do people have instead?

I just want to be able to stream stuff and occasionally record things.

Bugahug · 02/05/2025 12:22

We are looking at getting rid of sky abd looking at a recording freeview box and obvs we have netflix, prime and disney+. I just haven't got round to A)phoning sky B) sorting Airel c) buying free view box.

devildeepbluesea · 02/05/2025 12:23

Recording box thing, itvx and prime. Also alternate Disney/netflix/Apple if there’s anything I want to watch. Mainly use iplayer and itvx

WinterOnItsWayOut · 02/05/2025 12:24

Freeview recorder (Humax) and Netflix

WinterOnItsWayOut · 02/05/2025 12:25

And a smart TV for ITVx, 4OD, BBC iPlayer etc

HaddyAbrams · 02/05/2025 12:25

A fire stick. We pay for Prime and Netflix. Thinking of cancelling Prime though as we barely watch it.

Cam1981 · 02/05/2025 12:25

I have NOW TV all the Sky entertainment channels for 9.99 a month. I also have Sky sports through NOW TV as I am a footy fan although it is quite expensive. I also have Disney Netflix and Amazon prime. I work out that all of my subscription are still less than what I was paying for Sky

OneQuirkyPanda · 02/05/2025 12:25

Apple TV, Disney and Netflix

GraceUnderPresure · 02/05/2025 12:27

Netflix + now tv

KStockHERO · 02/05/2025 12:28

Prime - not worth it.
Netflix - good, worth it.

We also pay Channel 4 and ITV subscription so we don't get adverts.

I've never had Sky - just seems like usual terrestrial TV shit but much more of it.

WasherWoman25 · 02/05/2025 12:28

What do you actually record that’s not available on catch up?

We have a firestick and pay for Prime (mostly for postage rather that TV), Netflix & Disney + on & off depending on what’s on.

MorningSunlight · 02/05/2025 12:29

If you've got Sky Q you can link a Freesat box to your dish.

Whoarethoseguys · 02/05/2025 12:31

Free view, BBC iPlayer, and the other free channels. Netflix, Prime and Disney.
I have never had or wanted Sky

Meadowfinch · 02/05/2025 12:33

Just Freeview, and I don't get much time to watch that, but I always manage to find something new and worth watching.

RampantIvy · 02/05/2025 12:33

Have Amazon Prime but hardly watch it.
Watch loads on Netflix.

123dontcomeatme · 02/05/2025 12:34

Ha, I meant instead of the sky box thing.. we have Netflix etc as well and 99% of the time watch them. I really only wanted to keep the box for recording but realised we don't really record anything either.

I think a firestick might be the one.

Freeview and whatever online things come with our tv. Plus Netflix and Prime. Dh and I literally never watch anything, like truly have not sat in front of the tv since maybe last summer, oh, except for watching Home Alone as a family at Christmas. So it’s just to give the dc some options.

330ml · 02/05/2025 12:37

Apple TV and an Amazon Prime. The latter mainly for the “free” delivery benefit.

Just remembered that we have FreeSat too but I can’t remember the last time it was actually used.

TheDogsMother · 02/05/2025 12:47

We just got rid of Netflix as we weren't using it. We have Amazon Prime which is worthwhile for some viewing, the music unlimited and deliveries. Then iPlayer, 4OD, ITVX and a zillion Freesat channels.

We have honestly not missed the record option once since we cancelled, pretty much everything is available on catch up or some other stream.

WinterOnItsWayOut · 02/05/2025 12:56

@WasherWoman25i use my freesat recorder box as my WiFi is beyond shit and keeps buffering through adverts (I may as well pay for the box once - now 5+ years old than advert free streaming)

menopausalfart · 02/05/2025 12:58

I've had a firestick for years. Have everything I need on it.

Nourishinghandcream · 02/05/2025 13:01

Have never had Sky (or Netflix, Amazon etc).
In the dim & distant past we had a hard drive recorder (post VHS) but after that we got BT TV with our BB package and have had that ever since.

justkeepswimingswiming · 02/05/2025 13:01

Bodged fire stick. £33 a year for every channel, movie & tv show you can think of.

Flatbellyfella · 02/05/2025 13:04

Nothing other than Freeview BBC & ITV channels.
