What do people have instead of sky?

Just that really.

Have had sky for years and years, don't watch it and have wanted to get rid of it for ages... but, what do people have instead?

I just want to be able to stream stuff and occasionally record things.

Never had Sky. We have Netflix, which we use a lot, for most of our viewing, Disney Plus (less so but our dc like it) and Amazon Prime, which my DH's business pays for - but I wouldn't particularly recommend it as you still pay extra for most things on there.

ItisIbeserk · 02/05/2025 13:04

We’ve got the various subscriptions. If anyone is using Now, you can keep the prices down very effectively by regularly threatening to leave. The prices halve every time. You can do it all online - no need to call them.

My in-laws have Sky and still record things to watch. I find it really weird that they work their way through their recordings when everything is just available on demand! It feels clunky.

catkeys · 02/05/2025 13:05

Freesat. Haven’t missed sky at all. Got rid of Netflix too.

dogcatkitten · 02/05/2025 13:06

If you ring up Sky and say you are cancelling, they will probably offer you a really good cheap deal.

Augustus40 · 02/05/2025 13:08

Since I cancelled Sky I use Catch Up a great deal more. Itvx especially. We also have Prime plus Netflix. I watch you tube a great deal more than streaming channels though. Honestly I doubt you would miss Sky. Apart from an occasional pang for the Beauty Channel and MTV in my view it really is not worth all the money it costs!

You tube has lots of films on it too.

A life 😂

Sky is a massive waste of money. Pick one service (doesn't matter which), watch everything you want to watch on it. Cancel the service and pick a different one. Repeat. You can watch everything you like and it won't cost the world.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 02/05/2025 13:46

I haven’t watched “live” tv in years. It’s always streamed now and I watch to my own schedule so no need for a box to record anything. My tv is a smart one so all the apps are there. I try to keep subscriptions to a minimum but have teenagers that will click on free trials and we end up with everything.

This is what I wanted to do but my family have no self control! Grin

Tunnocksmallow · 02/05/2025 13:56

Amazon fire stick. Netflix, Disney+ and Apple TV. Lots of free apps too.
used to have virgin, but got too expensive

RampantIvy · 02/05/2025 14:08

We still record programmes we want to see. I refuse to pay extra for ad free commercial channels, and ITVX is a PITA with all the dross you have to sit through.

BeNiceWhenItsFinished · 02/05/2025 14:22

We just have Freeview. Can't be bothered to get anything else. DD has Prime and Netflix so if there's something I particularly want to watch, I go round hers.

Bikechic · 02/05/2025 16:36

I have missed the record feature on channels with ads. I used to like fast forwarding the ads on our virgin media box. So I'm interested in the recording free view box now that we've switched to cheaper internet.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/05/2025 16:43

We have a freeview box we rarely use now, and obviously use iPlayer and then vary which subscriptions we have. We’ve got Prime anyway as we have it for deliveries, Prime is currently a freebie with one of our bank accounts and we’ve got ITVx (essentially took over from BritBox) at the moment. We sometimes have Netflix but I don’t think we do at the moment.

PassingStranger · 02/05/2025 16:48

Sport Sport Sport Mainly
Love Sky arts too and the general choice.
We also have the films.

SamphiretheTervosaur · 02/05/2025 16:49

All the free ones and Prime

I have NOW TV all the Sky entertainment channels for 9.99 a month. I also have Sky sports through NOW TV as I am a footy fan although it is quite expensive. I also have Disney Netflix and Amazon prime. I work out that all of my subscription are still less than what I was paying for Sky

We have NOW entertainment package. Currently paying £4.99 a month for 6 months. Will go to cancel at after 6 months, and they'll offer me another 6 months at the same price or cheaper. I've been doing this for about 4 years!

Tiddlywinkly · 02/05/2025 16:53

Prime (rarely watch it, but useful for deliveries), Disney+ (kids watch it and it's got a good selection of films and documentaries), Netflix (good progammes/true crime) and NowTv (films and Sky Atlantic).

A lot really, but they do get used. I'm thinking of getting a free trial of Apple TV and binge watching.

suah · 02/05/2025 17:00

Netflix and All4.

We don’t have a tv licence any more and never had Sky. Considering getting rid of Netflix too because we only watch something every couple of months so some of the monthly payments feel wasted.

Isn’t recording a bit obsolete now everything is on catch up anyway?

Scandinoirfan · 02/05/2025 17:16

If you have a smart TV you can just plug your satellite dish into the TV rather than your box and get freesat channels (all terrestial channels plus many, many others and radio). Costs nothing. I miss Sky Atlantic now and again but not enough to pay for it!
We pay for Netflix and Apple TV and had Prime anyway. Comes to about a third of what we paid Sky.

Recording means you can fast forward through the adverts.

Exactly. This is why we still record. ITVX and UDrama have loads of very annoying adverts that I really don't have the patience to sit through.

Until we changed our broadband provider we used to get a lot of buffering as well.

I also like to know that I can watch specific programmes without worrying that they have been dropped off the back catalogue.

Inlimboin50s · 02/05/2025 20:39

Just freeview. I watch TV a lot and always find something I like, whether it's The notebook or Bridget Jones on a Friday eve or Location, location location or Tales of the unexpected ,so much choice.

XenoBitch · 02/05/2025 20:40

I have Prime and Netflix. I have a Firestick, and there is loads of free stuff on there too. I had to get a Firestick as my smart TV is not that smart anymore.
